Xbox Series X|S Outsold PS5, Switch In UK In January
Microsoft's console managed to come out on top for the first time since launch, with the PS5 heavily supply-constrained.
The Xbox Series X and Series S outsold both the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 in the UK throughout the month of January, in a month where console sales jumped almost 150%.
According to chart specialist GfK (via GamesIndustry.biz) over 150,000 total consoles were sold in the region in the first month of the year, with hardware from all three console manufacturers doing well. The Nintendo Switch in particular saw sales rise by 21%, as Nintendo's hybrid console continues to set company records.
In terms of physical software sales, Nintendo still ruled the roost. Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe took top spots on the sales charts, with Grand Theft Auto V claiming third (contributing to its latest 140 million sales milestone). Spider-Man: Miles Morales still managed to make the top 10, while new release Hitman 3 squeezed into the top 20 despite a later January launch. The same wasn't true for Xbox and PC exclusive, The Medium, however.
AMD CEO Lisa Su has indicated that production constraints will influence limited console stock until at least July 2021, while Microsoft has indicated that it expects Xbox Series X|S stock to remain limited for the forseeable future.
