Xbox Series X And S Preorder Guide: Here's When Preorders Start Next Week

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are about to go up for preorder. Here's what you need to know, including the preorder date and time, price, and more.

The next generation of Xbox is just a couple of months away, and you'll soon be able to preorder the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, which release November 10 for $500 and $300, respectively. While PS5 preorders went live this week at a moment's notice (and are already nearly sold out), Xbox Series X and Series S preorders start next week, and fortunately, we have exact details ahead of time.

Preorder date and time for the Xbox Series X and Series S

Preorders for the Xbox Series X and Series S will start on September 22 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET in the US and Canada. Microsoft has confirmed. Meanwhile, preorders will start at 8 AM BST in the UK, 8AM AEST in Australia, and 8AM NZST in New Zealand. Other regions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa will see preorders go live at 9 AM CEST.

Where to preorder the Xbox Series X and Series S

In the US, you will be able to preorder the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, Sam's Club, GameStop, Newegg, and Army and Airforce Exchange Service at the preorder date and time listed above. Other countries will also be able to preorder at any aforementioned store that is available in their region. Microsoft has also provided an extensive list of stores providing Xbox Series X and S preorders broken down by country.

Placeholder listings for the Xbox Series X and Series S are live at the Microsoft Store and Target. You can also check out the general information pages already live at some retailers below. Some stores will allow you to sign up for Xbox Series X and Series S preorder notifications so you receive an alert when the listings go live.

What is Xbox All Access?

As an alternative to paying upfront, you'll be able to take advantage of Microsoft's Xbox All Access program, which lets you pay for your Xbox Series X or Series S console over 24 months. If you opt for the Xbox Series X, you'll pay $35 per month, while the Xbox Series S will cost you $25 per month.

Opting for Xbox All Access will actually save you money in the longterm, as the payment plan includes Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which comes with Game Pass for both PC and console, xCloud game streaming, Xbox Live Gold, and an EA Play subscription. The Xbox Series X payment plan will cost you $840 total, a $19 savings when you consider the console is $499 and Game Pass Ultimate over two years is $360. You'll save even more with the Xbox Series S payment plan, which will cost you $600 total and save you $59 on the price of the console and Game Pass Ultimate over two years.

You can't sign up for Xbox All Access just yet, but expect it to be available by September 22 when preorders go live. Xbox All Access will be available in 12 countries this holiday season, and in the US, you'll be able to sign up at Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and the Microsoft Store.

Xbox Series X overview and specs

The Xbox Series X console and its controller
The Xbox Series X console and its controller

Following the Xbox One X, Microsoft is poised to once again have the most powerful console on the market. Its GPU has 12 teraflops of power, which is about 1 teraflop more than what Nvidia's RTX 2080 Super is capable of. The Xbox Series X is capable of displaying true 4K, performing up to 120 frames per second, and storing games on its 1TB custom SSD. Microsoft has also revealed how navigating the Series X interface will look, including a revamp of the current dashboard, phone integration, and more.

The Xbox Series X will make use of propriety expandable storage cards to extend the amount of SSD space the console has. It's unclear if Microsoft will be the only company producing the special expandable storage (it's currently working with Seagate to produce the cards).

The SSD storage will be required for Xbox Series X-only games, though you'll still be able to use your Xbox One's external hard drives. These external hard drives can be used to store and play backward-compatible games from the Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox 360, and original Xbox. You can also store Series X games on these external hard drives and then transfer them to Series X storage to be played. Speaking of, every game playable on an Xbox One is also playable on the Xbox Series X. Microsoft also said that there won't be any Xbox Series X-exclusives for the first year or two; Xbox One owners will also be able to play Microsoft's new games for the next couple years.

Xbox Series X specs

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.8GHz (3.6GHz with SMT)
  • GPU: 12 TFLOPs, 52 CUs at 1.825GHz, Custom RDNA 2
  • Die Size: 360.45mm2
  • Process: TSMC 7nm Enhanced
  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6
  • Memory Bandwidth: 10GB at 560GB/s, 6GB at 336GB/s
  • Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVMe SSD
  • IO Throughput: 2.4GB/s (Raw), 4.8GB/s (Compressed)
  • Expandable Storage: 1TB Expansion Card
  • External Storage: USB 3.2 HDD Support
  • Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive
  • Performance Target: 4K at 60fps - up to 120fps

As for the Xbox Series X controller, Phil Spencer said Microsoft didn't feel like it needed to start from "square one" with a new controller. The controller launching with the system looks, at least at first glance, almost identical to the Xbox One controller.

"We think we have a good controller in the market today," Spencer told GameSpot. "But there were certain things that we've learned through doing the Elite controller and just listening to fans. One of them is on the D-pad. We have a new hybrid D-pad that we've been working on and think is important."

The controller also adds a Share button and keeps the rumble triggers and haptic feedback. It's powered by two AA batteries as opposed to an internal battery that might lose performance and die over time. And you don't have to own an Xbox Series X to use the new controller: It's backward-compatible with the Xbox One. All Xbox One controllers, including both Elite controllers, are also compatible with the Xbox Series X. Be sure to check out our guide to the best Xbox One controllers that will be compatible with Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series S overview and specs

The long-rumored Xbox Series S offers a more budget-friendly option and next-gen performance in the company's "smallest console ever built," according to Microsoft. The digital-only console comes with a custom 512 GB SSD for fast loading times, instant game switching, and support for 1440p gaming at 120 FPS. This means the Xbox Series S is as capable of powerful next-gen gaming as the Series X, but it's not intended for native 4K gaming. If you're someone who primarily buys games digitally and subscribes to Xbox Game Pass, the Xbox Series S is made for you.

Xbox Series S specs

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.6GHz (3.4GHz with SMT)
  • GPU: 4 TFLOPs, 20 CUs at 1.565GHz, Custom RDNA 2
  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6
  • Memory Bandwidth: 8GB at 224GB/s, 2GB at 56GB/s
  • Internal Storage: 512GB Custom NVMe SSD
  • IO Throughput: 2.4GB/s (Raw), 4.8GB/s (Compressed)
  • Expandable Storage: 1TB Expansion Card
  • Digital-only: No disc drive
  • Performance Target: 1440p at 60fps - up to 120fps

The Xbox Series S also comes with the updated Xbox Wireless Controller in Robot White, which will be available to purchase separately this holiday season.

And now that Halo 6 is going to be on PC this time, there is absolutely no reason to get an Xbox Series X, unless you play on a toaster.

XseX 12.16TF = $500US But the way Microsoft have been lately it wouldn’t surprise me if they sold XseX at $400US.

ps5 9.2TF = $500(it’s not a 10.2 TF console it can’t sustain peak clocks of CPU & GPU simultaneously)

ps5AD 9.2TF = $400/450

XseS 4TF = $300

Halo Infinite is all I need at launch. I thought the game looked more next gen than anything I’ve seen to date from either company. Open world Halo at 4K 60? Yes please. 343i have got a banger on their hands here.

The graphics are so clean. There’s a heft and solidness to them. Not sure if that’s a consequence of the 10 X the processing power per pixel compared to Halo 5 or not. I’m not a programmer. The warthog looked like an actual model had been scanned into the game. I love the look they’ve gone with. Once they fix the dynamic day night cycle and add raytracing it’ll look even better.

There’s no other launch game that comes close to this game. On either console.

New and improved enemy AI I truly believe Halo Infinite is going to be a masterpiece from 343i.

Can’t wait.

After seeing that horrible display of games last Thursday, forget it. Halo looked like it was something straight out of 2013. I am just happy I got Gamepass ultimate for cheap with the contract for a dollar uptick so I changed out my Xbox Live account for 3 years of GP Ultimate for a dollar. Unless there is a media need, there are literally no games that look interesting and it also appears gamepass for MS is low cost lead for development in that arena to saturate a market base of what really are F2P games outside of a handful, or stagnant 3rd party launches a year+ old to sell DLC.

I'm not seeing a place to sign up for notifications from walmart.com unless I missed it. What many are failing to understand about preorders is they can be canceled and a full refund can be issued if you had to pay anything at all to preorder. Imagine the tears when someone says they'll wait. Then when the systems launch in very short supply, the same person is wasting time and money driving all around town for several days trying to find a system they could have preordered and had delivered to their house the same day. You guys needs to see farther than your own noses.

@TheEternalGamer: Considering Walmart has cancelled their preorder plans with PS, they will likely follow suit with XB.

Edit - Just realized your post was from 3 months ago. Disregard.

I am not pre ordering Xbox..

This generation has been AWFUL.

If not for Gamepass it would be a complete failure..

Every Single Exclusive was a fail(I think every Single one)

*If you are a fanboy of either and a grownup then I thankyou

for the entertainment :D

*I used to look at it as Xbox/Microsoft= USA

PlayStation= not USA

But both are 99% made in China..

Microsoft has a MAJOR/SERIOUS LEADERSHIP PROBLEM...

I don't think Phil SPencer is the quality/gamer leader he lets on/pretends to be.

What are the odds that Crackdown3,,State of Deacay2,,SeaOfThieves,,Gears,,Halo5

we're ALL DISSAPOINTMENTS??? Microsoft owns all these companies and they release crap compaired to what they released before Xbox bought them... Obsisians New game was such a disappointment.

The Outter Worlds~ I had to force myself to continue playing it..

And it was free err gamepass..

Sony isn't off the hook either!!!

What they are doing with YouTube Takedowns/CopyrightStrikes with & Through NaughtyDog

is disgusting!!

And I don't think this is new behavior from them. IMO they are just overt because they we're cornered.....

Bottom line= don't pre order anything..

If you pre order games then you are the problem...

Imagine pre ordering when you don't even know the price of the system nor have any idea if anything worthwhile will be on system outside of Halo Infinite.

PS5 should stay at $399 - $450 no higher imo , that's perfect for what they're offering

and It's not too big of a loss that can't be made up quick from a fast adoption rate

due to affordability , on top of the momentum and IP they have.

Xbox Series X should be $499 - $549.

I don’t see a huge difference in price between the PS5 and XBOX series X unless Sony cuts a lot of corners like Sony did with the PS4 Pro.

Sony needs money badly.
