Xbox Series S Is So Small, Phil Spencer Had It In His Background And We All Missed It

The official Xbox Twitter account pointed the system out in a very I Spy kind of way.

We know the Xbox Series X is a hefty console when compared to Xbox One and One X. We also know the PlayStation 5 is one of the taller systems coming to the market. But just how big is Microsoft's "smallest Xbox ever," Xbox Series S? You only need to check out Phil Spencer's shelf to get an idea.

According to the official Xbox Twitter account, the head of the company has had the system on his shelf in livestream since July 1. In fact, the company pointed it out with a magnifying glass like it's a game of Where's Xbox. It's so small, it's just been hiding next to some white stuff like binders and such.

It's difficult to point out. The zoom, while helpful, doesn't exactly make it apparent that what's behind Spencer is, in fact, the Xbox Series S. However, that's likely a testament to the discless system's size.

According to official specifications, the Series S is 10.8 inches tall, 5.9 inches deep, and 2.5 inches wide when stood vertically. For comparison, the Series X is 11.8 inches tall and 5.9 inches deep and wide.

We went hands-on with mockups of both the Series S and Series X, with editor Michael Higham getting an up-close look of the console's final design. Higham walked away stunned with how surprisingly unbulky the Xbox Series X actually is.

Both systems are slated to launch this November 10 for $299 (Series S) and $499 (Series X). You can check out our Xbox Series S and Series X preorder guide to learn more about the next gen consoles.

You would have to be psychic to have spotted that and know what it was.

@bdrtfm: Some people spend a lot of time scrounging video's for clues, ask any developer who's 4K video's scanned over a computer screen that wasn't properly blurred lol, I think it happened to 343 a year or so ago.

Yes though, seeing that and saying 'THAT'S LOCKHART!' would be a one in a million guess. Probably fun for Phil to know it's back there, make the interview a little bit more exciting.

It only looks slightly bigger than the PS2 slim.
That's very cool.

I hope the PS5 slim will be as small!

I like the look of the Series S, but I don’t think anybody was ever going to notice a plane white box on Phil’s shelf and think it must be a console we’d never seen and Xbox hadn’t officially announced at the time.

@mogan: It was probably just fun for Phil. A tantalizing feeling to add to otherwise standard interview. I agree though, nailing that as the next Xbox would have been fairly difficult.

It's literally a white box, so totally unremarkable. I'm not sure whether this is really doing any favours for advertising this product, in the sense that it shows nobody who visits your home will even notice you own this thing.

@Rufus_the_rat: It might, some people don't want electronics sticking out. A lot of people loved that the newer Xbox's were so small.

@walbo: Read good comment again. I don't think he wants people to notice. I think he's just pointing out how unremarkable it looks, which is why nobody noticed

Yeah, I bet it's only because it's so small, no because it looks nothing like you'd expect a gaming console to look. If I saw that thing standing somewhere in the background in some video I'd think it was a portable stove, definitely not a console. It couldn't even pass as a speaker since the bottom part is empty.

Such a miss opportunity to not paint an 'X' on that black circle (it's the cooling exhaustor, right?). The console looks like a damn sound system

You got this all in the wrong order. You cant miss something that wasnt even confirmed to exist, let alone know what it looks like. He could have literally held the thing and we still wouldnt have been able to say what it was until they announced it.

@lionhartwolf: Well, I think you could have made a pretty accurate guess with the run up to a next gen console launch what a random box he would be holding into a camera could be. Especially with the rumor of less powerful box having been around for longer than this video.

In the actual instance, that would have certainly been a one in a million guess. 'Hey, I bet that white WD hard drive thing back there is Lockhart.' You'd be called crazy and ignorant for months until this was revealed, but man, you'd have been dead on lol.

@barcaazul: Its only really a thing because people/reddit is having fun with finding products hidden in plain sight after the RTX 3080 was revealed peaking out from behind a bunch of spatulas in its reveal video.

@fitzy_2812: Yeah, it's fun for the people setting up the video and fun for the people to try and find. Movies and what not often have a ton of small easter eggs riddled throughout that are significant and just fun for the people involved to have. Leaving a script on the table in a scene, a dvd of their past movies, stuff like that.
