Xbox Scorpio Will Deliver "Very Best Console Version Of Games," Exec Says

"I'm very confident," Phil Spencer says.

If you're picking up a Project Scorpio console, you can expect to play the "very best console version" of games this year, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer.

Asked on Twitter if games like Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: WWII (presumably) will look better on Scorpio, Spencer said, "I'm very confident, from what we are seeing and hearing, Scorpio will be the very best console version of games this year."

No Caption Provided

According to Microsoft, Scorpio--or whatever name Microsoft ends up giving it--is the "most powerful console ever made." It boasts 6 teraflops of performance, including 326 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Additionally, Microsoft says the console's engine is the "most powerful console gaming processor ever created." The console has a vapor chamber that uses "advanced liquid-cooling," while it also uses the Hovis Method to maximize performance and minimize power consumption.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation with PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Microsoft is expected to share more details on Scorpio at E3 or sooner. Presumably we will learn the console's official name and price, among other things, in the weeks and months to come before the system's launch this holiday.

In other Xbox news, Microsoft's E3 2017 planning is taking shape. Microsoft conducted an end-to-end runthrough of its briefing today, which apparently took all day.

Additionally, Microsoft Studios boss Shannon Loftis said the company may soon announce at least a partial list of the games it's bringing to and showing off at E3.

The Xbox E3 briefing this year takes place on a new day, Sunday, starting at 2 PM PT on June 11. GameSpot will bring you all the news from the event as it's announced.

@runstalker: I don't like what they do to the games, They make you run at their FPS and you can't mess with anything. Plus the added Auto Aim with all the games because console people suck balls.

It bugs me how much this guy talks. Should just shut down his tweeter account and let the console speak for itself at E3.

I am sceptical that Scorpio will be a success. I hope it will be a popular but I am very doubtful. Sony has now sold almost 55m units, while Microsoft has sold 28m units and Sony has 74% of the market share.

Although the Scorpio maybe the most powerful, developers need to have a reason to spend the time and effort make games for MS and also optimise them for the Scorpio.

Given this market share ratio difference at this stage of the game, I am very doubtful.

Scorpio will never run the best versions of Uncharted, the last of Us 2, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and many other great games. Until MS starts releasing great exclusives on par with those I mentioned I see no point in getting a Scorpio as i already have a PC and a Ps4. For me gaming has always been about the games, not about the hardware, and MS has been lacking in that department lately.

@fackman1984: Nothing runs The Last of Us 2 or the new God of War yet. I don't expect to see those games this year either so maybe you can give MS a little break. They have not announced anything as far out as Sony has. They also have Crackdown, Sea of Thieves, Forza 7 and State of Decay 2 coming this year or early next.

Xbox needs a total reboot in order to be successful. I would be fine with the Scorpio having exclusives and not being bogged down by the limitations of the Xbox One, even though I own a One. Xbox just needs to get out of the rut its stuck in, so it can be competitive against Playstation again, like it was last generation.

Knew this was an Eddie article before I got here. The subtitle on the homepage doesn't even make sense.

Just like the PS4 Pro, only worth upgrading if you don't have the current model.

@animal84: I recently bought a 4k hdr Samsung tv, and borrowed a PS4 pro from a friend to see if it was worth the upgrade, and I can tell you that Uncharted 4 in the pro looks like a different game. I guess there are some things you have to see for yourself to comprehend, but the difference is really noticeable in games that take advantage of hdr and 4k.

Nov 2017 Scorpio comes out

Spring 2018 PS5 announced (everyone keeps their money for PS5)

January 2019 first actual game optimized and supporting scorpios features comes out

2020 Microsoft in the same place with no games

Please Microsoft release some good launch titles or at least have some planned for 2018

I'm afraid it'll take too long for anything to make it out and those of us that switched to Sony won't have a reason to come back still.

That's all good and all but there's one problem. Scorpio's much like PS4 Pro's CPU is a huge bottleneck. So devs targeting for 60fps with other technical gameplay implementation will be significantly hindered. The following video is on PS4 Pro but it also applies to Scorpio as well. At the end of the day, Microsoft forgot to upgrade one of the most essential part of its console in any meaningful way, which is the CPU.

@speed45823: you have that wrong, scorpio's is 50% more efficient and 31% faster than the 1 inside the xbox one s. whereas the ps4 pro's is just 30% faster than the ps4, so comparing the pro CPU to the scorpio's CPU you get this, for every 50 task's the pro does the scorpio does twice as many 15% faster, so that bottleneck on the pro you speak of doesn't exist on the scorpio.

@eternalrogue198: You're comparing Xbox One against Scorpio in which of course Scorpio will be faster. We can do the same with PR4 vs PS4 Pro too and claim the same. Not the point. The fact of the matter is that both PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio has almost identical CPU cores which is the bottleneck here. Scorpio boasts a powerful GPU, more powerful than PS4 Pro but its CPU will be the bottleneck here and devs themselves have pretty much confirmed it.

@speed45823: did you just ignore the part where i said its more efficient compared to the ps4 pro's CPU, the only difference between the ps4 and the pro CPU is that it is faster, the scorpio CPU compared to the pro is 50% more efficient and 15% faster, that difference in EFFINCIENCY is huge scorpio can do twice as much as the pro cpu and it does it 15% quicker, simpliest way to explain it the pro CPU does 100 things every second, for that same second on the scorpio CPU it does 220 things.

@eternalrogue198: Is this for legit ? Where did you get this info ? Cause what I saw from the specs, the CPU architecture of Pro and Scorpio is exactly the same. Yes it is possible to have same / similar CPU and one have it better efficiency than the other. So if you can provide any statement of this on Scorpio, would appreciate it.

@speed45823: it was specifically mentioned by richard leadbetter in the digital foundry specs reveal video, while talking about the the CPU, he states that the changes made by the xbox team have reduced the load on the CPU making it 50% more efficient compared to the xbox one, on top of the fact that they upped the clock speed to 2.3GHz making it 31% faster, i should point out that this is in reference to directx12 been incorparated into the GPU, so this efficiency only effects those games using directx12 but that is a large portion of games and a lot more games going forward, my bad for not stating that fact originally, there are other optimisations on the CPU that will help reduce the load as well just not by 50% in those cases, for instance state changes have been reduced to 9 on the CPU and draw calls from the CPU to the GPU have been reduced to 11 from 100's to possibly 1000's that you typically see on all other CPU's, there not changes that the pro has got. check out this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE2hNrq1Zxs&t=149s watch from about 2 minutes into that video, it states it all in there.

@eternalrogue198: Ah yes. I see now. Thanks to DX12, CPU overhead can be drastically reduced. Hmm.....promising stuff. We'll have to wait and see how the devs implement these into future games when Scorpio comes out.

@speed45823: not to mention most games arent limited by the cpu in any way. every single game i play cpu load max 40% and when i overclock by my cpu by 20% it returns like 1% increase in frame rates....cpu is not a bottleneck unless you are playing certain games like rts. thats a general rule of thumb not in all cases but typically the cpu is not a bottleneck with an average speed cpu or better. i have no doubt scorpio will not crippled by the cpu. that would be idiotic of MS.

Mighty Scorpio is on the way minus a single solitary exclusive so we can all play all the multiplats we are playing already and a couple of shit indie games that would run fine on a mobile phone.

A console with fancy bells and whistles is just that without any games that support it whats the point.

Sure some third party devs may try to boost their ips a little bit on it but i highly doubt microsoft first party studios will even pop its cherry for many years to come ill just wait till a price drop on the thing.

@playstationzone: they already announced a good amount of new games releasing around scorpio in forza, crackdown, state of decay, sea of thieves & cuphead. microsoft will surely show new ips and also upcoming franchises we know about at e3 to go along with 1000+ playable games out already. now with the superior version of all 3rd party games i would say xbox is looking solid on the game front for the Scorpio at launch.

Give me a crisp 4K image with the textures to go with it, no jagged lines, minimal pop in, nice draw distances and no screen tear. That's all I ask from a new console. So far only select PS4 Pro enhanced games have been able to offer that out of the entire history of console gaming. I'm confident Scorpio will do at least that and possibly more.

@khanwashere: that's all you ask? lol... you are asking for a lot for a sub $600 console. you are asking for performance that even high end pc's cannot always reach. native 4k is extremely demanding to say the least so you should limit your expectations. i don't think there is a chance a game like red dead 2 will run at native 4k on the scorpio for example.

@emptycow718Geezus man, if you think RDR 2 is going to be native 4K -and- 60fps on Scorpio, keep dreaming.

It should be a nice, stable 30fps with excellent image quality. But a full doubling of the frame-rate in that engine, at that complexity, in native 4K? Dream on!

90% of the stuff on Scorpio is going to be native 4K and 30fps. There will also be quite a number of 60fps titles that use dynamic/adaptive resolution engines to hit the performance.

You'll get your native 4K/60fps from the usual suspects: the arcade racers, the fighters, the geometrically simpler indie games, and so forth.

Native 4K/60fps RDR2: Let's not get carried away.:

@Xristophoros: The Scorpio isn't using vastly more expensive components, it's just highly optimized. Research and development doesn't factor into the per unit cost.
