Xbox Scorpio Will Deliver "Very Best Console Version Of Games," Exec Says

"I'm very confident," Phil Spencer says.

If you're picking up a Project Scorpio console, you can expect to play the "very best console version" of games this year, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer.

Asked on Twitter if games like Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: WWII (presumably) will look better on Scorpio, Spencer said, "I'm very confident, from what we are seeing and hearing, Scorpio will be the very best console version of games this year."

No Caption Provided

According to Microsoft, Scorpio--or whatever name Microsoft ends up giving it--is the "most powerful console ever made." It boasts 6 teraflops of performance, including 326 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Additionally, Microsoft says the console's engine is the "most powerful console gaming processor ever created." The console has a vapor chamber that uses "advanced liquid-cooling," while it also uses the Hovis Method to maximize performance and minimize power consumption.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation with PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Microsoft is expected to share more details on Scorpio at E3 or sooner. Presumably we will learn the console's official name and price, among other things, in the weeks and months to come before the system's launch this holiday.

In other Xbox news, Microsoft's E3 2017 planning is taking shape. Microsoft conducted an end-to-end runthrough of its briefing today, which apparently took all day.

Additionally, Microsoft Studios boss Shannon Loftis said the company may soon announce at least a partial list of the games it's bringing to and showing off at E3.

The Xbox E3 briefing this year takes place on a new day, Sunday, starting at 2 PM PT on June 11. GameSpot will bring you all the news from the event as it's announced.

That's nice. What about some actual GAMES for it? The price needs to be around 400 bucks or they are in serious trouble with this.

@sodapoppimpski: While it is an opinion, the fact is that Playstation has more and higher rated exclusives than Xbox. That isn't even debatable.

I think the world would end if Sony announces the Super PS4 Pro at E3. At the very least, the comment section will hit record highs not seen since 2013

@pspearman: MS released a much better version of the Xbox One 3 years after release, and a much much much better version 4 years after release. I don't see anyone with an original Xbox One or the newer S model complaining. Why would anyone complain about a PS5 coming out 2 years after the Pro(which we all know was to help psvr out)?

@ivanov70: You're joking right? MS is great at software, Sony is great at hardware. They finally did a good job with the Xbox one S model though... And their surface pros are good although expensive. The tech in the next 3 years is changing rediculously fast. Just look at the AMD processors for a clue.

@joshrmeyer: You made my point for me yes sony is a hardware company which is a disadvantage really. The Sony version of ps4 would've been 2gb ddr3 ram mark cerny had to fight sony to get the ps4 you play today and he was just a consultant ms knew the specs sony wanted that was why they were so cocky what they didnt know was mark cerny scrapped the sony ps4 and gave us his vision of ps4 thank god for mark cerny. So one man outthought the entire sony ps4 dev team. Which is why i have doubts they could replicate the wizardry ms demonstrated getting 4k native out of hardware that has no business doing so.

@ivanov70: I'm not understanding how being a hardware company is a disadvantage? Mark Cerny does no work for Microsoft. All the games he's worked on since 2000 have been PS exclusives. Why would Sony put 2gbs of RAM in the PS4? I know they were on the fence about using gddr5 but gambled and it paid off huge. Mark Cerny was the lead architect as he was in the development of the Pro. And he probably will be with the ps5. How does he have anything to do with MS? Is MS not rich enough to hire their own engineers to make a system that doesn't overheat or twice the size of the competitions system? Yay, they finally figured out how to put the power brick inside the console, congrats MS.

BTW: Don't doubt Mark Cerny. The PS5 will be remarkable.

@joshrmeyer: A 2 year cadence is unsustainable. Consoles are low profit devices as it is and you expect them to be working round the clock to release a new version every two years? They would barely cover their R&D costs within that time frame.

Then there is the impact it would have on developers, most games take longer to develop than two years and introducing a new model from MS or Sony into the mix every year (based on alternating yearly releases) would be detrimental to the development process.

A 3-4 year cadence is much more likely and much more sustainable.

@pspearman: I agree totally 3 years should be the new "norm". If Scorpio released at the same time as the Pro, I think we'd be seeing a 2019-2020 release for both Sony and MSs next console. And I hate to say this because I hate the idea, but consoles really are turning into PCs are far as upgrades go... Kind of a mix between the cell phone model and PC model. Every game made from here on should be scalable just as they are on PC. Both companies are using x86 so this shouldn't be a problem.

@joshrmeyer: They're not complaining because the only true upgrade is the scorpio the xbox one S was just a slim xbox one, I could say the same no one conplained when sony released 2 new ps4 in less than 2 month A ps5 in the next year is overkill forcing people to upgrade and shit unlike MS you will no longer be forced to upgrade from now on and leavr your library behind

@clarens56: Why would ps5 force people to upgrade? Does PC force you to upgrade after 5-6 years? Probably.... Doesn't mean games won't still be on PS4 for years after ps5 releases. If you want ps5 exclusives, then yeah, you'd need to upgrade. Just like it's always been. But going off Sonys exclusives release dates. I doubt there will be any ps5 exclusives for awhile. It'll probably be PS4 pro and ps5 exclusives. I have no problem upgrading to a new console every 5-6 years. And for those that upgraded to the Pro, they'll still have plenty of years of support.

@lardladicus: No, it relied on the dual "exhaust fans". Vapour chambers have only started to be used on high-end GPUs.

But in actuality it will be a marginal difference so they will have to have a decent price to make people get on board. As they are constantly calling it a premium product I see it having a premium price which could spell doom. I'm not a troll or fanboy or anything like that but I get the feeling this will be effectively a steam box

@sellingthings: Absolutely, and I wasn't trying to infer you were a child either, by the way. Sometimes I'm bad with wording things, and English IS my first language haha. And yeah, I've been a fan of Moonco's wit around here since before I took the time to actually create an account. Frankly it seems to me that she has a better command of the English language than a lot of native speakers.

Every two weeks Phil makes a statement that the Scorpio will be the most powerful console ever. And without a doubt GameSpot will publish it again. I guess the OG Xbox One sucked so bad they need to be assured.

@alaskancrab: just answering fans questions on twitter, i wouldnt call that making a statement. regardless, thats the whole part of marketing, no? need to start getting the word out about their new console seeing how according to a recent poll gamespot posted showing consumer knowledge about the existence of scorpio is low.
