Xbox Scorpio Awareness Is Relatively Low Among US Gamers, Report Says

Scorpio also ranks low for purchase intent--but that could change soon.

Research company Nielsen today released its annual report covering all manner of topics about gaming in the United States. The full "US Games 360 Report 2017" is fascinating and well worth a read; and you can read it here. We've broken down some of the breakout statistics and figures below.

One of the standout charts has to do with awareness of current consoles. With Microsoft's Project Scorpio coming out this year, it looks like the company still has work to do to drive awareness in the product. This chart shows that only 11 percent of the US general popular aged 13 or over had heard of Project Scorpio. The awareness leader is PS4 (69 percent), followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (61 percent), Nintendo Switch (22 percent), and PS4 Pro (21 percent).

In terms of awareness for the surveyed gamer population, Scorpio came in at 14 percent, the lowest of all the categories except for "None of the above."

And in terms of awareness for non-gamers in the US, Scorpio sits at the bottom as well, at just 3 percent. The PS4 leads the way among non-gamers, at 52 percent, followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (41 percent), PS4 Pro (9 percent), and Switch (7 percent). Thirty-seven percent said they hadn't heard any of the consoles.

Scorpio's relatively low awareness--for all of the surveyed groups--is not a big surprise. Although the console was announced a year ago, Microsoft has not talked all that much about it since. This has changed in the past few weeks, with Microsoft beginning to share more details. The results of the new report come from a survey distributed in Q1 (January-March), which is before Microsoft started to unveil more Scorpio details, which may in part explain the relatively lower awareness percentages.

After Microsoft gives Scorpio an official title and launches a marketing campaign for it, the awareness figures will surely grow. With E3 right around the corner, Microsoft may be waiting until then to kick it into high gear ahead of the console's release this holiday.

Another notable takeaway from this report is that 77 percent of people who identified as gamers know about PS4 and 72 percent for Xbox One S. This could mean those consoles--which are already performing well in the market--still have room to grow further still.

The Nielsen report also has a slide for purchase intent. The PS4 (21 percent) leads the way in the gamer group, followed by Xbox One (17 percent), Switch (16 percent), PS4 Pro (15 percent), and Scorpio (13 percent).

Another key industry topic that the report covers has to do with physical vs. digital game preferences. While digital consumption is no doubt on the rise, the report shows that, for console gamers aged 13 and older, physical is still the preferred method for the majority (69 percent). As suspected, digital skews higher on PC, with 75 percent of respondents saying they prefer digital.

The Nielsen report also shows that PC is by far the most popular platform for average time spent playing weekly. Twenty-six percent of gamers said they spend the most time on PC during a typical week, followed by PS4/PS4 Pro (14 percent), and Xbox One/Xbox One S (13 percent).

The US Games 360 Report 2017 was compiled from 2000-plus interviews (50 percent male/50 percent female) conducted by online surveys in Q1 (January-March). The responses were then weighted to "ensure representation of the U.S. General Population based on U.S. Census data."

@fig56: LOL. So in YOUR world, 360 comes before ONE? And you question MY math? Let me break it down for you so your head stops hurting. My original point was that MS came up with all of these arbitrary numbers after the first Xbox instead of a more conventional (and sensible) numbering scheme and calling the second Xbox number 2. Then you come along and make my point even stronger with a visual aid. Let that marinate a bit...

@topgun182: Not counting upgrades there has been THREE iterations of the Xbox. If they would release another it would be the 4th one then it would be number 4. The Xbox 4. Plus you just made another comment contradicting yourself...let's see it here:

"MS came up with all of these arbitrary numbers after the first Xbox instead of a more conventional (and sensible) numbering scheme and calling the second Xbox number 2."

So if they dropped arbitrary numbers then why would they call it XboxTwo? XboxOne was named after what the machine is A all in ONE entertainment machine. Not the first Xbox made. Because it was the THIRD one. Now that you have been schooled I'm blocking you and moving on....

The Scorpio is consoles version of the the Bugatti or Concord, technologically the best but never going to sell enough to make any difference on the market.

I expect low sales for it: too expensive and too late in the gen.

@kyelo: Too expensive you say, with its price still UNCONFIRMED. PS4 Pro launched at 399 and people have bought it, Scorpio may end up being that same 399...and your ignoring that whatever its price, it will drop over time just like any console.

Late in the gen? As if you know when this gen is even ending...or if it ever will have a traditional console end in the sense that we see Xbox 2 or PS5 anytime soon...Scorpio could go on to have a VERY long lifespan...it will start as MS's high end console, but over time as the price drops, it could become their best selling base model 2-3 years from now, still able to play newer games, with a higher spec Xbox released 2-5 years from now that becomes the high end Xbox. You presume 2-3 years from now Scorpio won't get any more games....and I don't think that's the case at all. This isn't a slim 360 releasing 3 years before the end of a traditional console gen like last gen...the console release plan we are seeing is something new and these latest consoles will last a lot longer than some think.

@NeonicTrash: They would sell a ton more of these things if they did away with a paid online service. Doesn't cost a dime to go online with a PC. It also doesn't help when I still have a couple of bricked 360's laying around the basement somewhere. Hard to trust MS after that.

@Barighm: It's convenient for me to build a PC and not pay them for something I get for free. It may cost more up front, but I'm not paying a subscription. The number one reason I don't own an XB1 and why my PS4 is rarely turned on. Too much money grabbing these days. You buy a game, but then have to buy an expansion to the game and then buy more DLC and pay to win, and so on, and THEN have to pay to be able to get all of the features of these games. Games are released in barely playable form in some cases because quality is second to profit, so you also have to pay to beta test for these companies. I assume XB Live and PS Plus make enough that they wont ever turn back.

Wow so only 11 and 21 percent for PS4 Pro and Scorpio. Not surprise about Scorpio but for PS4 Pro that's even more surprising specially when the PS4 Pro already been out for 5 or 6 months. Neither one not doing the best of job advertising the better versions of their product.

@angrycreep: Correction. Sony has done a TERRIBLE job marketing the PS4 Pro, in fact, if not for following gaming news online such as this site and watching Youtube gaming videos, I might not even know about the Pro. Where has their advertising been? I've seen general PS4 commercials, but not once can I ever recall seeing a specific Pro commercial talking about its benefits. I expect Scorpio commercials to be all over the place, and for Scorpio's final reveal to be done way better than Pro's was.

@NeonicTrash: Either one will play the games. Why market the "Pro" model to the general audience? Market the brand & let the retailer try to upsell them.

That's probably their strategy.

Who cares about Scorpio, Business Contacts told me a while ago that a PS5 Prototype will be shown behind closed doors at Computex 17 and launched Fall 2018. Scorpio = Mid Gen 4k Console PS5 = Next Gen 4k Console.

@Eddie619: False. Business contacts at GDC 2017 have PS5 delayed until 2019/2020 at the EARLIEST...Sony has had to go back to drawing board after Scorpio specs revealed, their next PS just wasn't going to be powerful enough. Contact your contacts and reconfirm your info.

I'll be enjoying my Atari 2600 on my LGMB60 and will gladly upgrade to MS Scorpio in 2017.

@Eddie619: I heard a rumor that sony was making a portable PS4 basically a switch but better. I don't believe PS5 will be out in 2018 its way too soon. For that to happen they would have to announce it around March 2018 to build up hype... sorry its simply not happening why kill the PS4 when its doing so well? PS5 is 2019 or 2020.

@Prats1993: Switch has a different feel and you know it. Hell I didn't want the Wii U at launch but my brother bought it for my kids. I enjoyed it a bit but it was severely flawed in many ways and felt very gimmicky. The Switch however I preordered and is a solid handheld and a comparable console. I'm enjoying Nintendo games with no gimmicks to controls thus far and just seems "normal" which is what I wanted. Since the Wii from the gamecube.
