Xbox Scorpio Awareness Is Relatively Low Among US Gamers, Report Says

Scorpio also ranks low for purchase intent--but that could change soon.

Research company Nielsen today released its annual report covering all manner of topics about gaming in the United States. The full "US Games 360 Report 2017" is fascinating and well worth a read; and you can read it here. We've broken down some of the breakout statistics and figures below.

One of the standout charts has to do with awareness of current consoles. With Microsoft's Project Scorpio coming out this year, it looks like the company still has work to do to drive awareness in the product. This chart shows that only 11 percent of the US general popular aged 13 or over had heard of Project Scorpio. The awareness leader is PS4 (69 percent), followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (61 percent), Nintendo Switch (22 percent), and PS4 Pro (21 percent).

In terms of awareness for the surveyed gamer population, Scorpio came in at 14 percent, the lowest of all the categories except for "None of the above."

And in terms of awareness for non-gamers in the US, Scorpio sits at the bottom as well, at just 3 percent. The PS4 leads the way among non-gamers, at 52 percent, followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (41 percent), PS4 Pro (9 percent), and Switch (7 percent). Thirty-seven percent said they hadn't heard any of the consoles.

Scorpio's relatively low awareness--for all of the surveyed groups--is not a big surprise. Although the console was announced a year ago, Microsoft has not talked all that much about it since. This has changed in the past few weeks, with Microsoft beginning to share more details. The results of the new report come from a survey distributed in Q1 (January-March), which is before Microsoft started to unveil more Scorpio details, which may in part explain the relatively lower awareness percentages.

After Microsoft gives Scorpio an official title and launches a marketing campaign for it, the awareness figures will surely grow. With E3 right around the corner, Microsoft may be waiting until then to kick it into high gear ahead of the console's release this holiday.

Another notable takeaway from this report is that 77 percent of people who identified as gamers know about PS4 and 72 percent for Xbox One S. This could mean those consoles--which are already performing well in the market--still have room to grow further still.

The Nielsen report also has a slide for purchase intent. The PS4 (21 percent) leads the way in the gamer group, followed by Xbox One (17 percent), Switch (16 percent), PS4 Pro (15 percent), and Scorpio (13 percent).

Another key industry topic that the report covers has to do with physical vs. digital game preferences. While digital consumption is no doubt on the rise, the report shows that, for console gamers aged 13 and older, physical is still the preferred method for the majority (69 percent). As suspected, digital skews higher on PC, with 75 percent of respondents saying they prefer digital.

The Nielsen report also shows that PC is by far the most popular platform for average time spent playing weekly. Twenty-six percent of gamers said they spend the most time on PC during a typical week, followed by PS4/PS4 Pro (14 percent), and Xbox One/Xbox One S (13 percent).

The US Games 360 Report 2017 was compiled from 2000-plus interviews (50 percent male/50 percent female) conducted by online surveys in Q1 (January-March). The responses were then weighted to "ensure representation of the U.S. General Population based on U.S. Census data."

@sakaixx: wow you're really a special kind of stupid. What you're referring to is simply introducing aspects of the product. They haven't even gone into major detail with any major gaming media outlets. Dropping shot answers to questions on twitter isn't marketing. Holy sh*t..

@SchNerdy: its marketing. No major reveal but its definitely marketing, as game sites pick up news of it. There is ways to market your product you know not just mass marketing. Welp what am I saying of course you don't, this why I am explaining. Good for you for being smart.

@sakaixx: no nitwit. Take a goddamn business class. Look up the 4 P's of marketing. Product, price, place, promotional strategy.. Scorpio is lacking all 4, except technically "place" because it's obvious where it will be sold..

@sakaixx: Heavens. That's not marketing. Marketing starts after E3; TV, printed media, online push etc. Phil is simply talking about an upcoming console that doesn't even have a name or price yet.

@sakaixx: Gamer is broad term though, could mean mobile gamers - of which there are far more than console/PC gamers. The marketing has been near enough non-existent to general audiences, they've released tech spec to a Digital Foundry and said some buzz words. The console doesn't have a name, we don't know what it looks like and we've not even seen a game running on the console. Why would a casual gamer have any idea what it is?

How is it that 9% under the "gamers" category have not heard of any of the listed consoles? That just baffles me.

People who visit gaming websites don't actually represent gaming awareness in general. Shocking.

Yeah, that's because they classify "gamer" as anyone who jerks off to Candy Crush.

I don't think you can be called a "gamer" if you haven't heard of the platforms. :D

@HOLYSHMUCK: To be honest I think their definition of gamer must be pretty broad to include 23% percent who have never heard of a PS4 but being a gamer is predicated on playing games, not keeping up with industry news like consoles that aren't even out yet.

Just because many Gamespot readers can name every single console ever released & every major GPU manufacturer, I wouldn't expect every single person who has picked up a Playstation controller at a friend's house or downloaded Candy Crush while sitting on the bus to be able to name all the current offerings.

Being a "gamer" isn't some kind of badge of pride to be earned. It's just a description of a person who plays games sometimes.

@mk64: I believe you are a gamer if you play games. The platforms you are not interested in are irrelevant. I can't say for sure I am aware of all that exist. Those that I am not aware of, I don't care about. If what I currently use was lacking, I might research alternatives. But to say you are not a gamer because you don't spend your time doing that is inaccurate.

@mk64: Well I'm going to bed so can't wait for your answer. But If Casual vs hardcore is what you mean, I was looking for your definition of either. Based on several factors such as time gaming, investment, longevity, and diversity, I'm harder core than most. What I spend on hardware is ridiculous. My cpu costs more than most consoles. I have owned or own every PS and XB except the XBoxOne. I have been Gaming longer than many here have been alive. I build my own PC's. Currently have two, one is for gaming only, and that is the weaker one. i7 3770K and GTX970. My Main PC is a i7 7700K and a GTX 1080 that I just built last month or so and I game in 4K. I have about 8 racing wheels from early Logitech force feedback to a T300RS. I have a HOTAS setup for flightsims. I don't think any of this puts me in the "casual" bracket, but I also don't generally use labels like that, so I wouldn't know. If you reply later, we can continue...

Haha just kidding, clearly your ability to consider the opinions of people other than yourself is what makes you a casual.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: Well, I was unclear if that was a jab or not because I see silly terms like "PC Master Race" and people disparaging each other for owning a console or a PC as if the two are mutually exclusive. I don't get involved in such absurdity. My first pc was a 286/10 and my first "console" was an Atari 2600. I have known struggle...

@topgun182@shaundewey: Sarcasm was set to maximum.

I just think it's funny that as soon as somebody has a different opinion, they get called names like "casual". It's much easier to find a reason to dismiss people's opinions than to actually engage with their ideas in real debate.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: My bad, I've met enough people who genuinely have that mentality and it's pretty annoying, worst is they're usually casual CoD and FIFA players or think games like Fallout 3 and 4 are RPGS *bursts out laughing* poor guys..

(By casual I mean, they spend a few hours here, a few hours there with friends and think that they are amazing, till they get an ass kicking and start crying "cheater")

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: I think his ability to consider others is what makes him human, it's called not being biased and is a great trait that so many are lacking these days.

I'd consider myself a casual these days, hell I've only got 30 world rank 1s on racing games now....And I don't even do progressional raiding on WoW anymore, hell I can't even remember the last time i sat down for more than an hour to grind some menial s**t in a game i don't like.
