Xbox Scorpio Awareness Is Relatively Low Among US Gamers, Report Says

Scorpio also ranks low for purchase intent--but that could change soon.

Research company Nielsen today released its annual report covering all manner of topics about gaming in the United States. The full "US Games 360 Report 2017" is fascinating and well worth a read; and you can read it here. We've broken down some of the breakout statistics and figures below.

One of the standout charts has to do with awareness of current consoles. With Microsoft's Project Scorpio coming out this year, it looks like the company still has work to do to drive awareness in the product. This chart shows that only 11 percent of the US general popular aged 13 or over had heard of Project Scorpio. The awareness leader is PS4 (69 percent), followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (61 percent), Nintendo Switch (22 percent), and PS4 Pro (21 percent).

In terms of awareness for the surveyed gamer population, Scorpio came in at 14 percent, the lowest of all the categories except for "None of the above."

And in terms of awareness for non-gamers in the US, Scorpio sits at the bottom as well, at just 3 percent. The PS4 leads the way among non-gamers, at 52 percent, followed by Xbox One/Xbox One S (41 percent), PS4 Pro (9 percent), and Switch (7 percent). Thirty-seven percent said they hadn't heard any of the consoles.

Scorpio's relatively low awareness--for all of the surveyed groups--is not a big surprise. Although the console was announced a year ago, Microsoft has not talked all that much about it since. This has changed in the past few weeks, with Microsoft beginning to share more details. The results of the new report come from a survey distributed in Q1 (January-March), which is before Microsoft started to unveil more Scorpio details, which may in part explain the relatively lower awareness percentages.

After Microsoft gives Scorpio an official title and launches a marketing campaign for it, the awareness figures will surely grow. With E3 right around the corner, Microsoft may be waiting until then to kick it into high gear ahead of the console's release this holiday.

Another notable takeaway from this report is that 77 percent of people who identified as gamers know about PS4 and 72 percent for Xbox One S. This could mean those consoles--which are already performing well in the market--still have room to grow further still.

The Nielsen report also has a slide for purchase intent. The PS4 (21 percent) leads the way in the gamer group, followed by Xbox One (17 percent), Switch (16 percent), PS4 Pro (15 percent), and Scorpio (13 percent).

Another key industry topic that the report covers has to do with physical vs. digital game preferences. While digital consumption is no doubt on the rise, the report shows that, for console gamers aged 13 and older, physical is still the preferred method for the majority (69 percent). As suspected, digital skews higher on PC, with 75 percent of respondents saying they prefer digital.

The Nielsen report also shows that PC is by far the most popular platform for average time spent playing weekly. Twenty-six percent of gamers said they spend the most time on PC during a typical week, followed by PS4/PS4 Pro (14 percent), and Xbox One/Xbox One S (13 percent).

The US Games 360 Report 2017 was compiled from 2000-plus interviews (50 percent male/50 percent female) conducted by online surveys in Q1 (January-March). The responses were then weighted to "ensure representation of the U.S. General Population based on U.S. Census data."

How is this surprising..

1: it doesn't have a name yet so there's zero advertising for it.

2: Price hasn't been announced.

3: A lot of people make their purchase decision based on their friends recomendación so until the console is fully announced/released there isn't a real way to determining purchase intent.

@DIOSNY: It's surprising indeed when you realize people were immediately excited by Switch back when Nintendo first revealed it's code name "NX" and barely gave any information until January 17.

@heqteur: There is a big difference between being exacted about a product to actually having intent to purchase.

Ex:

I had zero interest in buying a PS3 until 2010 when I saw MLB The Show vs the garbage that was MLB 2k10.

I wasn't interested in 4K until I went to Best Buy and saw the difference.

The same way a lot of people were against touch screen phones cause it could never match the precision of a real keyboard. And we all know how that turned out.

Consumers don't know what the want until they see it in use gamers specially like to have the latest and greatest.

One of the first things i learned in my first statistics class is there are lies, Damned lies and statistics. This poll is designed to make Microsoft look bad nothing more. Wouldn't surprise me if Sony paid Nielsen for it. Its polls like this that show Clinton was going to win and we know how that worked out. This also tells me, not to put any reliance on Nielsen at all for pretty much any poll.

So this is the "lies" part you were talking about, right? Or perhaps a Damned lie?

@Thanatos2k: Can you read? "Wouldn't surprise me if Sony paid Nielsen for it". That is in no way a statement of fact that Sony did anything. It just a casual speculative statement at best implying that companies often do things to make their competition look bad. Do I think sony did anything? No. But it would not surprise me if they did. Sony has a history of doing underhanded stuff such as the malware/CD scandal years ago. Nothing any of these companies do would surprise me(with the exception of the utter stupidity of Don Mattrick) Next time, take time to read if you want to have a discussion about something I've said.

@Terminator95: Not really. Statistics can be used to "prove" just about anything. If I asked the right questions, I could probably get statistics to "prove" the sky is purple.

@Terminator95: actually, no. Gamers are the ones winning in the current gaming industry's condition. No matter who you pledge your allegiance to, there are crazy games to play on all platform. Period. Gamers shouldn't be the ones to worry about sales number. Nobody cares if someone is playing on the most or least popular platform. What people care is: what are the games to play? And currently, there are epic titles everywhere.

I think as time moves on and MS expands on Scorpio especially pricing more will know about it. I do not see this as a minus right now and sooner MS talks about pricing, things may start loosening up. Wait until the holiday to state prices MS may miss out for some people like to save up and if you wait until the last moment, most will have brought what they wanted Imho.

What should have been mentioned in this article was Nielsen's definition of a "Gamer". It was a bizarre definition which counted someone who only ever played games like Angry Birds on their mobile.
Definition of a gamer is someone who likes games, shows more than average interest in the subject, and who more than likely will seek out information about Gaming, including online sites like this one.

@sealionact: exactly. they should at a minimum own at least one console of some kind from at least the 360, ps3 generation and or have intentions of buying another console in the next 2 years.

If somebody can not recognize the PS4 AND XB1 consoles they should not even be counted as gamers they are just "the public".

What gamer has never heard of a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One? 23% of them don't know? What kind of chart is this?

So 90% of the people who've heard of Scorpio want one but only 50% of the people who've heard of the PS4 Pro want one? See, amazing what you can do with arbitrary numbers and no context, isn't it?

Only 77/72 percent of "gamers" have heard to the PS4/Xbox one? That alone makes this poll basically worthless because the data is obviously nonsense. Those are the two big consoles right now and they have been out for nearly 4 years now. I don't doubt that a lot of people haven't heard of the Scorpio but I can't possibly trust this data on anything lol

I'm calling BS. Scorpio's awareness is believable, but only 77%/72% of GAMERS have heard of the top consoles that have been out almost 4 years? Yeah, no way. This "poll" is garbage.

@Daveof89: Depends on the definition of gamers. Nielsen reckon that someone who occasionally plays games on their mobiles fits that description. I don't.

Word of mouth is the oldest form of marketing and still one of the most powerful forms of marketing.

Just because it's not pasted all over TV doesn't mean it's not being marketed to us, we know the machines specs, it's general capabilities (albeit in first party implications) it's general price point $399+ "premium product") and what kind of machine it'll be (an extension of the Xbone)

This is all marketing we've gained by word of mouth and through a small CGI tech demo.

Word of mouth marketing doesn't necessarily have to be executed by the products manufacturer, they just need to cause enough hype that it's the potential consumer that does the marketing, just like when you or me mention how good a game or a snack is, we're.marketing it on their behalf (and no the product doesn't have to be available for it to be talked about, look at the Resident Evil 2 remake, there's almost as much hype for that at the moment as there is for FF7s and we've seen more of FF7s progress, it's also word of mouth)

@sealionact: But there are hundreds of car manufacturers with hundreds of different cars each which have extremely different prices in some cases. You could have a cheap car but love ferrari for example. That doesn't happen here, as there are two mayor consoles that cost almost the same. You can pick what you like. I don't know why people bother to compare cases like these when usually these comparisons don't make any sense to someone with common sense.

@Arkhalipso: I am pretty sure it was accurate. There we're even other non gaming brands before Xbox. I also went to a panel for don't where many young people said it's hard for then to associate PlayStation products with the Sony. So maybe younger people aren't as focused on gaming anymore.

But just on principle, I guess I wouldn't trust that magazine either.
