Now Playing: Splinter Cell: Conviction Free With Xbox Gold In July

It's the middle of July, and that means it's time for Microsoft's Games With Gold offerings to cycle over into the next round. This week, Death Squared is being added to the Xbox One offerings, and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is swapping out for Splinter Cell: Conviction on Xbox 360. Assault Android Cactus for XBO remains free until the end of the month and Death Squared will go until mid-August.

However, Sam Fisher appears to be suffering some technical setbacks. Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) tweeted that engineers are investigating reports that Splinter Cell isn't showing as free for some users. If it doesn't appear properly on the store when you check in, the problem will likely be fixed soon enough. [Update: Sure enough, the issues have been resolved, according to Microsoft, and you shouldn't have any further problems downloading Conviction.]

As always, any new Xbox 360 games added to the Games with Gold service are backwards compatible, so you can play them on your Xbox One. They join a large and growing list of backwards compatible games, since Microsoft has made it adding new games a priority.

Those are the inclusions with Gold, but separately, Microsoft also offers its Game Pass subscription service for $10 per month. That has a wide selection of its own, including all new first-party games alongside their regular releases.

July 2018 Games With Gold

Xbox One

  • Assault Android Cactus (July 1-31)
  • Death Squared (July 16-August 15)

Xbox 360 (playable on Xbox One)

  • Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown (July 1-15)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction (July 16-31)

This whole article, with a link to a twitter post & lots of gamespot game spaces, but you can't put a link to the Microsoft download page? Screw convenience for people with Xbox, am I right, neo-Gamespot?

why do so many people hate conviction? it's one of my favorites in the series....

@whakyZ86: it's the 1st one that jacked up the traditional splinter cell formula. Also, if you were gaming when it came out, you'll remember it was much different than what they originally showed it to be (at e3 or wherever it was shown first). Having the mission objectives on the wall is about all that it kept from what they showed originally, but it seems that showing one thing & releasing another a couple years later became the norm.

I couldn't stand how they kept selling it, saying Sam was like a "panther" now...

@twztid13: i was around and i did notice that it was a departure from the original formula........but i really liked the more aggressive style they added. in fact - i got a lot of enjoyment out of trying to be stealthy and avoid all the insta-kills....try it, if you give yourself rules like "no shots fired"....or always keep your gun holstered....there's a lot of challenge and creativity waiting for you

@whakyZ86: You played Blacklist? Much better than Conviction. But nothing beats Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory.

@AlabamaFan92: IF you can get over that Michael Ironside does not voice Sam

Even the X360 version of Double Agent is better than this duck&weave monkey shooter

Why can't the dates be from July 1st to 31st? Why does it have to get confusing with some of the game availability dates. I'd like to claim all the games once a month like I do on my Playstation.

@Ice-Cube: Same dates EVERY month (1st and 16th), what is so confusing about that?

@dlCHIEF58: Why do they even separate the dates? Again, they should release them all at the same time.

@Ice-Cube: Wahhhh, IT IS FREE!!! You want them to wipe you off too?

@cashx002: free, with a $60 per year subscription, FWIW.

@twztid13: You get TWO GAMES PER MONTH. THEY ARE FREE, as part of the subscription. And very much worth it. Stop crying baby boy.

@cashx002: I don’t think you understand the term “Free”. No need to pout.

@Ice-Cube: "Free with subcription." One pays for a "subscription" to xbox live. They used to NOT do this and you'd just pay for the "the subscription." If you don't like it, don't pay for it and go elsewhere bro.
