Now Playing: GS News Update: Xbox One X Is "Not For Everybody," Microsoft Boss Admits

In just a few weeks, Microsoft will launch a new console in the form of the Xbox One X. A more powerful version of the Xbox One, the system arrives on November 7, priced at $500 in the United States. While Microsoft of course expects it to sell well (the pre-orders are apparently strong already), Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now reiterated that the lower-cost Xbox One S model will remain Microsoft's best-selling console this generation.

"Xbox One S will be the market leader for us. It's the more affordable console. It plays all the same games," Spencer told us at the Brazil Game Show. "It will be the console that sells."

The Xbox One X, meanwhile, is aimed at players who are looking for the "very best experience" with a home console. Even if you don't have a 4K TV, you'll still see the benefits of the console's increased horsepower and more, Spencer pointed out. But similar to the Xbox One Elite controller, the Xbox One X won't be for everyone. It's all about giving players choice; if they want to spend more for a high-end experience, they can. This has been the setup on PC basically since the start, and now consoles are catching up, starting last year with the PS4 Pro and now the Xbox One X.

"Whether you're on a 1080p TV or a 4K TV, you're going to have a great experience. But it's not for everybody. It's like when we built the Xbox One Elite controller, we didn't try to say to everybody, 'If you need an extra controller, go buy the Elite controller.' We sold a ton of those controllers. We know in the gaming segment, there are a lot of people who play games casually and there's also people where gaming is their number one hobby.

"Their number one form of entertainment, and we want to give them the very best experience. I've played games in true 4K with HDR, and they look fantastic. But it doesn't mean everybody has to do that. So we're giving gamers a choice. Whether we've pushed the innovation too far? It's hard to do that with gamers. I guess we'll see; I feel very confident in the product we have coming to market."

I’ll stick the S since I mostly game on my Pro and Switch. Love my S but see no reason to shell out $500 on a system I only play BC games and a few Xbox exclusives.

Something else people fail to realize (when shelling out 500$), you're going to have the same UI, the same LONG install times if you use discs. Some people have external HDD's with games on them, so they can transfer games, and some don't. Yet for a LOT of games that are "enhanced" as they call it you're still going to have HUGE downloads. For those people with slower internet, it's going to be days before they get to "experience" the so called "better" enhanced gameplay. Also no one has had their hands on this console, it may have all sorts of issues as a lot do upon launch. When you put this much power in something not much bigger than a standard laptop, you're just asking for problems. So we'll see how many disappointed people we have on launch. I hope not, then again maybe this will teach people not to jump the gun and get excited about "power". Which isn't even close to the most important thing in gaming.

Also what games are these people actually wanting to see/play that are enhanced besides a few new titles (Which some devs will support) some won't. And no one knows HOW they will run, even if at 4K. Most fear very poorly, while others don't even think about drops way down in the 20's. And just because the cooling system is something new means nothing. This will probably be the loudest Xbox ever, which many will complain about. So these are just a few issues I see. Lastly the 4K updates, once these are put into play, will people "really" be that impressed by what the game looks like? Will it change an old game like Halo 5, or Gears 4...it won't change the outcome, story, or much of anything else. And most have played these game over and over again. I think that's why they wrote this article because not even they have faith that the system will do well. Period. To many permutations. And those are just the ones I'm thinking off. Again, and again, if it's not broken............

@bubba_666: You're way off on a lot you should do some basic research before replying to these type of threads...Digitalfoundry already answered the sceptics with the fact the X is everything they are claiming it to be...and no one Ever said that Power is the most important thing in gaming but the Fact still stands that it is a VERY IMPORTANT aspect in what games are capable of doing...So in this case it's totally like having your cake & eating it.

@agravier: Since when? DF has shown us that it still does checkerboard 4k and dynamic resolution scaling. That isn't the True 4k MS keeps pushing at people. I can get both native and checkerboard 4k for $100 cheaper with a Pro.

Avatar image for agravier

@darkelf83: Have you been living under a rock...go look at all the comparisons they been making so far the X puts the Pro to utter shame DF even referred the Pro's texture comparison as "MUDDY SOUP" and the XB X on par to high end PC's...So you can take your head out of your ass and quit being a fanboy blind to reality...the X is 40% more powerful thus games will always LOOK\PLAY\SOUND(Dolby Atmos) BETTER!

@bubba_666: Well, just to put your mind at rest .... If like me, people have their games on an external HDD, it's just a case of plugging in. You can actually download the 4k textures and enhancements to the x1x remotely, while you're at work etc from the Xbox app. Also, MS is introducing a new feature called intelligent delivery, which cuts down download times. It's interesting.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-new-xbox-tech-cuts-down-install-sizes-and-reduces-download-times

It wont be the same UI either. X1X launches with a new UI which will be available to all Xbox owners after launch.

As for issues - well, I doubt it. MS have learned their lesson. It's not the loudest ever, in fact it's been described as "Super quiet".
https://segmentnext.com/2017/10/09/xbox-one-x-amazingly-super-quiet/

"what games are these people actually wanting to see/play that are enhanced besides a few new titles"
Actually, there's currently over 150 titles old and new that are confirmed to have enhancements - not just a few new titles. Quite reassuring when you think that there are more confirmed enhanced titles for x1x before it's even launched than there are for the Pro which has been out for nearly a year now. Of course I'm sure you know that even games without enhanced textures will look and perform better.

As for whether or not people will be impressed - well, I can only say that I was very impressed with Pro graphics, and that x1x will definitely not be less impressive. I will absolutely play games like Doom, Titanfall 2, Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Gears 4 and others through again, and games like Ori 2, PUBG, Forza 7, Sea of Thieves, Shadow of War etc will have the same gameplay, with brilliant visuals - and audio too. Looking forward to try out some Dolby Atmos.

The reason why they wrote this article, is because they are hoping to bait some good old fashioned clicks. I think MS quoted the One S selling more the One X thing about 3 months ago.

@sealionact: All of you guys are just going on speculation, as no one has even used the actual "Xbox One X" yet. Don't put all of your games in one basket just yet. I'm a 42 year old gamer, and I've played and seen all of the systems. The 360 at the start was a disaster, and later on had a 33% failure rate from the red ring of death. Took them a few years to figure it out. Yes they are great engineers, but, well, we'll just wait and see. Then get back to each other. ;0)

Avatar image for sealionact

@bubba_666: Nothing I said was speculation. These are people who have tried x1x, seen the games and put their experiences on YouTube or elsewhere.

Lastly, you can actually download all 4k content for the games you own to your external HDD now, so when x1x launches there will be no waiting for updates, patches etc.

Even a sceptic has to admit that's pretty neat.

Avatar image for wretch1d

@bubba_666: You are also speculating, nothing more, but yes if they have another RRoD scenario that will not be good, in fact it will probably be a huge nail in the MS coffin.

Avatar image for sladakrobot
sladakrobot

@bubba_666: and why are you speculating?

Avatar image for bubba_666
Bubba_666

@sladakrobot: Because for the vast majority of gamers, ones I've actually talked to. They don't CARE at all about 4K. They just want good games. I think 99.9% of gamers care more about that. Or even having a more solid framerate, which the X can't promise. I just sold my S, I stick with the PS4 because I'm on surer ground with it. And the exclusives, wait or no wait. They will be amazing, and that's my main concern...not power. Look at what the Stock PS4 can produce for a 4 year old console with 6 year old technology in it. Pretty remarkable. ;o)

Avatar image for sladakrobot
sladakrobot

@bubba_666: you say ppl who replied to you are speculating and thats why they are wrong but you started to speculate first.

I speak of download times, installing times and you expect technicall problems...you never tried the XbX and not on a 4k tv,you never installed a game on it and you never updated a game!

Sounds silly to speculate but forbiding others to do the same.

Further,i never saw you posting similar coments in the ps section! The pro is an upgrade which plays only games available for the ps4,it doesnt has any exclusives...

I am too impressed about the old X1...Forza 7 runs pretty impressive on it

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@sealionact: I know I'm holding off on a few titles until the X comes out to experience them entirely in 4K. Plus my backlog is huge right now, I'll probably have 10-15 good 4K games to play on day 1.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b2c8e0382c99

I think he misspoke. It's not the Xbox One X that's not for everyone. It's the Xbox One. Any model. There are just so few good games for it. It doesn't matter how powerful the system is, it won't make all of those crappy games good.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

It's amazing to me how they didn't make a few killer exclusives to make people really want their console. I have no incentive to buy it right now due to this...

Say no to mid gen console releases

say no to DLC

say no to yearly subscriptions

say no to Microtransactions

say no to gambling like purchases like battlepacks and fifa packs

They said DRM couldnt be reversed, cross chat and fakewards compatiblility couldnt be done but when we chose to not support watch how quickly things change.

Every time I hear the "Xbox One S/X has a 4K streaming and Blu Ray player" argument, I can't help but think, "Good, you are going to need it. You're going to be watching a lot of TV and movies when you have nothing worthwhile to play"

Avatar image for p0tent

@shadowpandora: I plan on only gaming on mine and watching no movies...

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@shadowpandora: Yup Xbox doesn’t have the First Party Exclusives like PlayStation And half their Exclusives Keep getting canceled, when I switched over from Xbox 360 to PlayStation 4 in 2013 I never looked back, I still can’t believe Xbox doesn’t have a Legit MLB Game when Xbox is an American Gaming Console. 🤔

Avatar image for sealionact

@Eddie619: Heh ... because a video game of a sport that is dwindling in popularity in America and is only otherwise popular in the Dominican Republic is the be all and end all of video game omissions for a console.

@shadowpandora: unreal. All these PS4 fan boys claiming Xbox has no worthy games to play. Meaning PS4 does. Xbox zero. Nothing? Really? I'm a big time gamer, had a 360 and still have games from that generation I want to but haven't played yet. So I've got plenty of Xbox one games to play. True, PS4 has more exclusives, but to say Xbox has nothing worthy to play is ridiculous. I bought an Xbox one over PS4 cuz of the Ms exclusives I like. It's just an opinion. The only exclusive I'm interested in to be honest from PS4 is the show. Ms has the third party support, some exclusives. I'll name some. Halo, gears, halo wars, Forza, sunset overdrive, cuphead, dead rising, gigantic, killer instinct, quantum break, ryse, etc not to mention to backward compatibility we don't have to pay extra for so that's even more games. I didn't even mention the indie games. Ok. But you're convinced Xbox has no games. Sounds like you're just butt hurt that your precious Sony ain't the most powerful any more. I don't even care about power. I'm happy with the s.

@shadowpandora: I know these pages are full of banter and clever quips...but do you honestly believe what you post? Or are you just looking for reactions from people who look puzzled when they read troll posts?

Seriously, the only games not available on Xbox are the ps4 exclusives. PS4 is known for having way more jrpgs available, in fact I don't think Xbox has more than a couple. Thing is, Final Fantasy sells truckloads. Over 130 million throughout the franchise. That's on Xbox. As for the other PS4 jrpgs, well they just don't perform over here, and remain a niche genre outside of Asia.

Last of us, horizon and Uncharted are excellent games and sell well, but games like nier, nioh, last guardian, no man's sky, Knack, killzone, lbp3, The order, infamous and many other games not available on Xbox have failed to sell in the numbers expected...which in my view means PS4 gamers (including myself) didn't rate them.

The games consistently at the top of the charts on PS4 are generally the same as Xbox; COD, BF1, FIFA, Destiny etc, and for every ps4 exclusive Id wish for on Xbox, there's one I'd wish for on PS4. PUBG, Cuphead, Halo, Ori and more...Sea of thieves, Sunset overdrive,Forza and Gears.

Theres literally too many games on both consoles...I can't finish them all.

Avatar image for heavleemetal

@sealionact: Get Gears, Forza and cuphead on pc anyway. PC and PS4 is the way to go.

Avatar image for sealionact

@heavleemetal: I have all three. PS4 for horizon, Uncharted and last of us 2 when it comes out...the others dont interest me that much, especially the manga anime stuff like persona.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@shadowpandora: but you would be ready to buy a seperate 4k player to watch movies?

Isnt it better to have a gaming device which already can do that and saves you money?

Avatar image for deviltaz35
DEVILTAZ35

@sladakrobot: it depends on ease of use though. For instance the Oppo players can be controlled from an Iphone or Ipad making it just so easy to use. Plus it gives you the option if someone wants to watch a movie and someone wants to play a game at the same time you are covered :).

I can thoroughly recommend the Oppo 203 Player as the quality is outstanding. I haven't used the 205 but that one is extremely expensive anyway and the differences are not in picture quality more in sound options.

I am sure the Xbox One X will still be a decent enough all in one though.

Avatar image for bubba_666

Yep no games no glory. People will still take PS4 3rd party titles on a standard PS4, instead of paying 500$ for a slight upgrade. People just want to PLAY!! :) I already pre-ordered AC Origins, and Wolfenstein 2 (digital) on PS4. They will look great on my Sony 1080p gaming TV. I mean really, 4k patches, all this BS just to play games...get real.

@sladakrobot: why you saying that,,ps3 is last gen,,same as 360,,,comparing that is stupid,,fact is all games on the s will be on the x,,it just an upgrade of the same,,it $500 for the same thing

Avatar image for sladakrobot
sladakrobot

@sinister432: yup and ppl are ready to shell out 1000 dollars for a new iPhone every 1 or 2 years which practically is only a slight upgrade.

If you ever played on a 4k tv with HDR,you will never say the XbX is a slight upgrade like the op did...he never did it and thus he speaks about things he has no clue of.

PS- look at the specs of the XbX and the Xb1...the XbX could easily pass as a next gen console if MS didnt put it in the same family of devices. Its 4x as powerfull and its around 40% more powerfull than the ps4pro. Speaking of a slight upgrade is absurd

Avatar image for deviltaz35
DEVILTAZ35

@sladakrobot: Putting it in perspective though it's only really like swapping out a 980ti for a 1080ti in a pc :). Not going to be a mind blowingly better experience between Pro and Xbox one X just allows for better resolution and smoother framerate. What is good over the other consoles is 12GB ram though . That should mean better texture resolution support. It is a shame it's not a 3.8 GHZ processor or something though.

I guess it would have just made the console too expensive and a larger footprint due to more heat dissipation required.

Avatar image for xxdavidxcx87

I'm sure the price isn't a big deal for most people, it's just come out too late, couple of years and the next playstation will be out and will be ryzen based and a lot more powerful so it doesn't really seem worth it.
