Now Playing: GS News Update: Forza Horizon 3 Joins The Xbox One X Enhanced List

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Xbox One X promised to bring even more beautiful graphics to your favorite games, and it's been delivering. With over 100 titles and counting, Forza Horizon 3's update has joined the ranks, and is available now.

Microsoft says the update allows you to play Horizon 3 in "native 4K," including the Hot Wheels and Blizzard Mountain expansions. The patch contains a bunch of visual enhancements for Xbox One X, from "improved car reflections and shadow resolutions" to "improved texture detail for road and terrain surfaces" and more.

"These enhancements are all about the visuals," said developer Playground's creative director, Ralph Fulton. "We know that our fans really value great image quality, so we've taken this opportunity to deliver that to them with this update on Xbox One X. On top of the obvious enhancement to native 4K, there are a number of other improvements we've made which really take advantage of the added definition 4K brings. Reflections are sharper and clearer, environment shadows are crisper and better defined, the quality of motion blur has been increased to make the driving experience significantly smoother, and better anisotropic filtering improves the detail visible in environment textures, particularly on the roads themselves.

"For me, the biggest improvement is in the combination of 4K and HDR though, especially in Forza Horizon 3's dynamic time-lapse skies. The sky is such a huge part of nearly every scene in the game that it affects the feel of the game a great deal, and the improvements we’ve made to reflections and shadows really complement it."

Forza Horizon 3 first released in September 2016, exclusively for Xbox One and PC. Since its initial release, its seen crossover cars from other titles such as Final Fantasy XV, and even an expansion featuring Hot Wheels.

Without a doubt this series has always been ahead of its time. Remember how beautiful the original Forza Horizon 3 looked when it first came out? This is probably the only video on YouTube that shows it in 4K: https://youtu.be/Ithcs9hE7uw

i know that currently xbox one x owners like to call 1440p the DEVIL but i was just thinking after enjoying an afternoon of native 4k beauty on forza horizon 3 that i wonder if the game would run at 60fps if they gave us a 1440p mode as an option. i mean i know 1440p is the cancer of the gaming industry but maybe just this once would be ok.

I haven't played it on Win10 since it was launched. I loaded it up on the X and damn, it looks good. Aside from the 30/60fps debate, coming from PC I had no issues playing this on Xbox One X. Simply stunning. Yes, of course we all want silky frames but this does not demand it in order to enjoy it or win anything. Not like the long list of regurgitated online shooters do. Microsoft did good with the X. It's the last major leap that was needed to force the following generation of gaming consoles to be true native 4k/60 power houses.

@lonesamurai1: MS should not allow all their games to be on PC. Some should be left to be only on the Xbox platform.

@lonesamurai1: Umm, at what point in that video do they say that the best way to play it is on PC?

While the PC version has a locked 60FPS frame rate, which is a benefit over the 1X version to be sure, the rest of the video talks about how the differences beyond that are minimal or not even noticeable, (and in some cases, things are better on the 1X).

How exactly does that translate to DF saying that PC is the best way to play this title? I understand that you love PC gaming, but they pretty much gushed about the 1X version of this game, and I think you heard what you wanted to beyond that.

@lonesamurai1: So I ask again, since you completely dodged the question.

Where in that video does DF say the best way to play this game is on PC? I've watched the video twice and I'm apparently still missing where they said that.

@lonesamurai1: Actually they said there were only subtle differences graphically between PC and Xbox One X. Mostly to do with motion blur and reflection quality though PC version still appeared to have bugs as reflections didn't always appear such as trees reflected in water in some areas. Where as Xbox seemed to use dynamic shadows as sometimes they didn't appear where they should. So it's possible both versions settings are still a bit buggy.

The biggest advantage of PC and it is a big one , is the smooth 60 fps gameplay though. Really hoping Forza Horizon 4 offers a performance mode @ 1080p on console and i don't care if it results in less detail . A racer such as this at 30 seems a bit slow is all.

No denying on a 65 inch HDR tv though that like Witcher 3 it certainly looks stunning. I love the colour of the water in this game be it the ocean or just rivers.

@blitxxx1981: What's wrong with FM7? I love that game.

It looks ridiculous in 4K with HDR, and the frame rate is fairly silky at 60FPS.

@fullyskully: CPU bottleneck. X1X CPU is shit like the other consoles. PC is the only platform that runs this game at 60fps or higher.

@BassMan: It is possible but they didn't wish to sacrifice graphics. Personally i think it was a wrong call not to offer both but it's their vision. What they could have done was used dynamic resolution scaling and an unlocked framerate with say medium 1080p dynamically scalable to say 1440p PC medium settings.

That should have been able to handle 60 fps for the most part. Being dynamic resolution it would have future proofed it for the next console to run at a locked 60 as well. They could even have it scalable for next Gen beyond that . (Who knows though maybe they are already looking at patching it again for next Xbox)

@BassMan: Not possible at 4k maybe but why not do what some other developers are doing and add a gameplay mode that sacrifices resolution for frame rate.

@fullyskully: A CPU bottleneck is independent of resolution. So, 60fps is not possible at 4K or 1080p.

@fullyskully: Bottlenecking is when a component is holding back the system and preventing the other components from being fully used and limiting the overall performance. Just like the neck of a bottle restricts flow and prevents you from emptying a bottle instantly. Each game has different demands of the system components. FH3 demands a lot of the CPU. So, the CPU usage is maxing out and the GPU is waiting on the CPU to feed it frames. The frame rate can not go any higher until the CPU is able to free up resources and feed the GPU.

@BassMan: There are tricks apparently they can use to help things to prevent bottlenecking the XBox one X CPU , i guess it will take time and games will need to be made from the ground up though. This is still impressive considering how small the patch is and that it is really still the base code from XBox One. 600 odd MB update is impressive. To me the real issue is that it was already a fantastic looking game so personally i just would have rather seen a 60 fps 1080p mode with less detail just to lock it at 60 for this type of game.

Hopefully Forza Horizon 4 offers a performance mode. It seems odd playing a Forza branded title at just 30 fps.

Correct me if i am wrong here but didn't the unpatched Forza Horizon 3 already offer x16 anisotropic filtering just by playing it on an Xbox One X anyway? Or is this only in effect for 360 titles?

@fullyskully: I don't think they wanted to spend that much time on the game seeing Horizon 4 is not meant to be all that far away. This is welcome in any case. Witcher 3 has an unlocked mode but it is crap as soon as you get to cities and such. It works well in open areas in combat but not in cpu dependent areas so this would be the same and the game would just become jumpy. Sure they could do a 1080p dynamic mode but my guess is with these rather weak CPU's it would be dropping to 720p at times to keep up to 60 fps making it rather awful on a 4k display.

We might see performance mode options in the next Horizon but not this one. It would need to be made from the ground up with the X in mind to be a silky 60 fps and that is not likely in this generation of hardware.

The Forza games (No horizon) are designed with a 60 fps capped framerate from the outset but Horizon never was on console.

@fullyskully: Well it's more of a balance really, the frame rate is never terrible either, it's rare to see a game where the average frame rate is below 30. But it's also not often you see a big budget game that targets 60fps either. RE7, Nioh, CoD, Wolfenstein 2, Forza, Gran Turismo, but I can't think of too many others.
