Now Playing: Xbox One Adds Two New Backwards Compatible Games - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Microsoft continues rolling out more backwards compatible games for Xbox One. Following last week's three additions to the BC library, Major Nelson has announced that two more Xbox 360 titles are now playable on the current-gen console: Assassin's Creed Liberation HD and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

Assassin's Creed Liberation HD is a home console port of the formerly Vita-exclusive title. A spin-off of Assassin's Creed III, Liberation is set in Louisiana and casts players in the role of Aveline de Grandpre, the series' first female protagonist. The HD version boasts upgraded visuals and audio, but it otherwise features the same content as the Vita release. You can read more about it in GameSpot's Assassin's Creed Liberation HD review.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, meanwhile, is one of Xbox 360's earliest shooters, first launching for the console in 2006. It received widespread acclaim on its release, earning a 9.2/10 in GameSpot's Advanced Warfighter review for its tactical gameplay and (at the time) stunning visuals. "Even those who don't necessarily like shooters may want to at least try the game out, as GRAW represents the best of what a tactical shooter can offer and can serve as a useful graphical benchmark to judge other games on the console by," we wrote.

If you still own a physical copy of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, you can pop its disc into your Xbox One and begin playing. Likewise, if you already own a digital copy of Liberation HD or GRAW, you'll find it waiting automatically in the Ready to Download section of Xbox One's My Games and Apps area. You can also buy either of the new BC games digitally from the Microsoft Store.

Xbox One's BC library has grown steadily ever since Microsoft first introduced the feature back in 2015. It now features more than 400 Xbox 360 titles and more than 30 original Xbox games. You can see everything that's available in our full list of backwards compatibility games, and for recommendations on what to play, check out our gallery of the best Xbox One backwards compatible games.

@mrzero1982pt2: Yeah same here I’ve practically got all the games now even the latter Ezio/Altair games despite having the Ezio Collection in PS4. Can’t keep up story wise anymore!

@sladakrobot: Well one things for sure Sony could sure take a step from MS when it comes to backwards compatibility particularly 5e resolution and visual boost benefits you can have from Original Xbox games. Kills me that they can practically put a PS2 emulator on PS4 and not even allow us to just pop our original disc based games in and play it in near crystal clear resolution. Look at PCSX2 and Dolphin on PC!

@art_vandelay7: yeah What with this idea drive BS. Bring back the previous feedback site and furthermore please add a separate list for original Xbox titles so we can vote on those too.

@killafolston: This pretty much! So many people have been asking for it now so would be great to get it in the near future. Give this and GTA IV an Xbox One X patch too :)

@killafolston: as games with gold, or just a backward compatible game? i mean, i miss MP3... that game was AWESOME!

The real question is, is the MP up and running? Thats whats important. Games like PUBG can learn a thing or two from G.R.A.W. Like hit detection. No other shooter had such perfect hit detection and the fact that I can choose between 30-50 different weapon setups was amazing! Not this Ghost War preset character crap we get now. Plus the ability to choose morning mid day and dusk for every map?! Man games use to be so good. Anyhow, Im down to play a lil “Old Town” “Embassy” and “Nowhere” MP and end it with a few games of a game mode that WE AS GAMERS created. PRESIDENT! Ahhh the memories.

@plus_1: Yeah I remember how freaking amazing this game looking back in 2006. Hell it even put the PC version to shame but to be fair that was it’s own beast and almost a completely different game.

I do agree with you though, they just don’t make games like these anymore with regard to Ubisoft

@plus_1: Servers for all Ghost Recon 360 games are working since they are all peer to peer anyway.

Sweet! More BC games are always nice. Although I really hope they continue to release Xbox One X enhancements for them too. Red Dead was sublime in 4k! I initially fired it up just to have a look but ended up playing through the whole damn game over a few days. Couldn't put it down!

@bobbybaxter: Yes please! Really hope Phil Spencer ups the ante in terms of XB1 X enhancements. So many 360 games I would love to see get the treatment

Avatar image for abehpfan

@bobbybaxter: Yeah, hope that's the case. With MS seemingly releasing Scarlett in 2020, we're only getting Crackdown 3, Gears 5, and Forza as Xbox One X exclusive showpieces. So I hope there's more Xbox One X Enhanced games to make up for the lack of big AAA exclusives.

2 good ones might have to pick up Advanced Warfighter considering the only Ghost Recon game we have this gen is garbage. More and more it seems like all the new games suck ass and were better off playing the old stuff that's why I am really thankful for this backwards compatibility feature.

Gamespot can you please stop saying you can just pop a disc in and begin playing as in order to play a BC title you have to download a compatible emulated version. It is not really BC at all. BC would be just popping the disc in and allowing you to play the game from the disc. Yes it's a great free feature from Microsoft but please explain it properly as it's not an instant play system from disc.

Avatar image for sealionact

@deviltaz35: Sigh. No game plays instantly. Pop in a ps4 disc in a ps4, sit back and let it install. With fast download speed a 360 game would install and play faster via bc than if it were installed from the disc.

@deviltaz35: they said for ages that you would have to download a patch to make the games work. the patch basically makes the xbox(whichever one you own) think it is a 360. its cool, but also a drawback, but it is also an incentive to keep your games, and get rid of your old system.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@deviltaz35: It is still very much BC but system limitations (no games run from disc) make it so this was the only solution. It may not be native, but it most certainly is still BC.

You are still right calling them out as if it is just pop in the disc and you are ready to go as well as failing to point out those without internet connection can't get BC titles downloaded to begin with (and likely would need a Live connection to use if purchased on another console due to the game sharing limitations on the 360).

@deviltaz35:

I think you are splitting hairs buddy what they say is how it is regardless of the small update you download or not you only need to pop the disc in and start playing it really is that simple I've done it myself.

I love the G.R.A.W. games. I'll definitely pop the disc in to check it out.

I really enjoyed Advanced Warfighter on the original Xbox. I may have to dig out that disc again.

Avatar image for NTM23

@lionheartssj1: The original Xbox, or the 360 version? It's only the 360 version, not the original Xbox version. Also... The original is quite different and much inferior. That all said, if you're just saying that you want to play the original Xbox version on your original Xbox, then never mind.

Avatar image for ryuburger

@NTM23: Yeah the OG and PS2 versions were whack

Avatar image for lionheartssj1

@NTM23: I meant the original. I know it was stripped down compared to the 360 version but I didn't have a 360 until later. I just hope my old Xbox still boots up!

I fondly remember the buzz around the 360 version of Advanced Warfighter way back when. It was billed as a true next gen experience.

Aside from visuals, has gameplay significantly improved over the last 10 or so years since it's release? It feels like we have plateaued this gen.

Avatar image for Marky360
Marky360

@Pac1Man:

If anything this gen has been a slow decline backwards. If you compare something like Ghost Recon Wildlands to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter it's obviously that Advanced Warfighter is a much better game and Wildlands just feels like a cheap knock off.

Avatar image for deviltaz35

@Pac1Man: I wish they would do a 4k re-release of Brother's in Arms games.

Please consider bringing GR1, Island Thunder, 2, and Summit Strike over from the OG Xbox. In my opinion - the best games of the franchise. I’d even re-buy a remaster of 1 and Island Thunder complete with multiplayer.

Avatar image for ryuburger

@Sevenizz: Yeah I never really played the original Ghist Recon game s but to me they were gameplay over visuals. They seemed so dated even back then and I was so glad when they improved the graphics ending for GH2

@Sevenizz: For the time , the open world was amazing . I would love to see a proper re-release of Operation Flashpoint too. I think that had a different name in the USA but same game. I believe the same devs now does a little online game a few people play :) .
