Xbox One Scorpio Won't Make 4K Mandatory, Devs Could Make Performance Better Instead

Xbox head Phil Spencer has said that he won't mandate games to be 4K on Scorpio.

One of the bigger news stories to come from E3 was the announcement of Microsoft's Project Scorpio, a more powerful Xbox One that can run games at 4K resolution. However, Xbox head Phil Spencer has since said that he won't make it mandatory for every game to run at 4K.

When asked on Twitter if developers can instead go for 1080p with 60 frames per second and "massively upgraded visuals," Spencer replied, "We'll talk more about this later, but we never said we'd mandate 4K frame buffer, we won't."

Spencer spoke about the subject last week on GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb's Live at E3 show, where he said letting developers do what they want is something he supports.

"We'll absolutely be open to that," Spencer said. "I think creative freedom and how you want to use the power of the box is something that I always support. I came from first party, as you guys know, so putting the right tools in the hands of the creators, the best creators, is our job as the platform.

"One thing we should make sure that everyone understands is, every game that comes out in the Xbox One family will run on the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Scorpio, so we have had some questions, 'Are there going to be Scorpio-exclusive games?' No, the line of games you're going to get to play is the same."

The fact that every Xbox One game can run on both the current and more powerful hardware suggests a limit as to what developers can do with Project Scorpio's tech. However, this is just conjecture. Spencer says we'll learn more about the upcoming console's specifics in the future.

Spencer has also come out to say that you shouldn't buy Scorpio expecting your current games to run better, though some of them might.

"If you look at a game like Halo 5, [it] implements something called dynamic scaling," Spencer explained. "As scenes get more complex, in order to maintain 60 frames per second, they will actually change the resolution that you're running at, and they're not the only game that does this. So if you run that game on Project Scorpio you're actually going to be at the max frame rate of that game more often."

Additionally, he said that we can expect Microsoft to release its games on Steam again, though he did not say when. In the same interview, he confirmed that Scorpio is four and half times more powerful than the original Xbox One.

He also talked about Microsoft's plan to be transparent, which is why the company was up front about announcing its two consoles at E3.

"I want to talk about Scorpio so customers can feel like they have a view into what we were doing so they could make the decision that is right for them," he said.

Hm getting mixed messages here, they say ignore Scorpio if you don't have a 4K TV because it won't do anything special for you - yet they say 4k is not mandatory on Scorpio and could be used to make games run smoother and prettier?

Will be awesome if the Scorpio can naturally play old XONE games at 60fps without requiring a patch by the developers.

The only exclusive I care about on Xbox are the Gears of War games and they are never brought over to Steam. Gears of War 1 is still the only one available on PC to my knowledge.

With all the talk about Scorpio and the complete absence of crackdown at e3 makes me think crackdown has just moved to Scorpio with MS giving up on the cloud idea altogether. It was probably never going to work properly on the One anyway

@girlusocrazy: or maybe a Scorpio was needed to make the cloud work better for how Mega they want crackdown to look, and those physics.... 4.5 more the power, the less consoles needed connected together

Fail. Now we're gonna have the same crap that goes on now; what resolution does it run at, is it 4k? What kinda framerate do I get, does it hit 60 FPS? The same lame articles are gonna be all over the place on GS.

@iRtehOWN: I'm sure the only shit you'll see at 4k is indie titles and geometry wars, matter of fact I bet they make that a launch title

But personally I'd rather have better looking lower res titles than 4k games with tons of pop in and ugly shadows, and that's been the trend on the One so far. Trying to look like the PS4 version with a lower res instead of full 1080p with lower quality assets/effects.

@girlusocrazy: Seriously the same thing all over again. Bleh! Just get a computer lol! You can only blame yourself if you don't get the performance you want, and even then, you can just fix it yourself. Ugh!

Then whats the point of Scorpio if games aren't 4K ? You better off buying an Xbox One S or Neo for that matter because those consoles will still be around for another 8-10 years. Personally I think that 4K machines will fail horribly because devs are too lazy and publishers want games pushed out the door like fast food places push out burgers.

@thomasn7: The point is to bring more freedom for the developers. Allowing the devs to scale their games to whatever resolution or frames they want and need to provide a better experience for gamers. Try reading the whole article and not just the headlines next time.

No THAT is a better idea. Forget 4k. Would rather have games run at 1080/1440p at 60 FPS than wasting precious horsepower for 4k games that won't even run or look well.

Good . I'll be happy if the game is 1080p and developers use that sweet 6 teraflops to create photorealistic textures , big beautiful worlds with great detail and really smart AI .

Most of the time devs won't make 60 fps games even if they can. A nice screenshoot is easier to market than fluid gameplay.

Yeah or just make the games in 1080 at 60 and put all the extra juice into things like ai or throwing more crap on the screen. Maybe dead bodies that dont disappear to keep poly counts low. There are still so many other limitations in games its silly to even talk 4k. Its just a pointless resolution jump that going to just sacrifice stuff elsewhere

I have huge doubts these systems will hit the true performance needed for VR to run well. It needs to hit 120fps at higher than 1080 .. for both eyes. In my non-technical calculations thats like 8-10 times the performance of current gen systems. I would have been fine waiting another year and let the current systems live out their lifespan for a better VR experience down the road. Unless they think Neo and Scorpio can handle it but from the sound of it .. nope. I don't want VR to have screen-door-effect or low frame rate .. or some kind of compromise that will make me want to puke.

Performance is infinitely more important than 4k. If Scorpio and Neo can't hit 1080p 60fps, I'm not interested.

@HedleyLamarr: they both will blow 1080 60fps out of the water....scorpio is basically a 980ti but will run more optimized on console platform 980ti benchmarks of 1080p are hard to find cause that wasnt even an issue........or a question....not sure why you would question that when its being marketed at 4k 60fps....probably the most taxing game on ultra recently has been the witcher 3 and digital foundy did a 1080p test on the 980ti and got rock solid 80fps....again i believe scorpio will perform better than 980ti. the question is will it do 4k at 60.......more likely 2 or 3k but that is good enough and a huge leap over ps4 or xbox one.....

Would be nice if they'd let the gamer decide with a simple graphics performance slider. Want 4k/30 it's up to you. Would you rather play at 1440/60 or 1080/60 but with increased anti aliasing then move the slider left 3 notches. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to implement if this is standard for pc gaming

It seems pretty clear to me how this new paradigm will work: Project Scorpio gets Xbox to the point where it can credibly support 4K, which is rapidly being adopted and therefore must be supported. Will it support it perfectly and for all games? Probably not, but it isn't intended to. We're just not there yet technologically.

However, several years from now, when reasonably-priced tech can easily drive even very complex games at 4K, Microsoft simply moves the bar upward, making Scorpio the new "entry level" console in the Xbox lineup, and introduces more powerful hardware at the upper end. Makes sense to me, and I far prefer that model to the alternative of being stuck with a rapidly aging box for five to eight years.

@EcksTheory: I rather have true next gen graphics at 60fps or a solid 30 fps solid. This 4K hype is boring 4K is a performance hog to get 4K 60fps with 6tflops would make the devs downplay the graphics in the end you would just have a games that looks like the games we have now only they would be in 4K ummmmm if they did that nobody would buy a Xbox Scorpio. The console markets was playing games at 480I for over 20 years and nobody was complaining so people should just stop acting like resolution is the be all. I want true next gen graphics at a solid 30 or 60fps in 1080p standard . 4K gaming isn't worth the lose in real graphics detail

I would like to see developers give us choices. 4K - 30fps, 1440p - 45fps, 1080p - 60fps. I would be a happy man. All the best things about PC with the convenience of a console! Guaranteed controller support, Keyboard and Mouse if implemented, Backwards and Forwards compatibility, Cloud Saves for every game, Achievements for every game, and best of all; play on the couch at the touch of a button!

Like people have mentioned even the GTX 1080 cant run 4k natively at 60 fps constant, I believe it has 9 teraflops of compute performance. Depending on the game of course, but for triple A blockbuster titles there is no way either console will run games in true 4k. Although if they are indeed going to enhance games at 1080P I might purchase an upgraded console.

@guitarist1980: A GTX 1080 most certainly can run 4k natively at 60 fps constant. Just don't set everything to Ultra settings. Things like max anti aliasing at 4k is pointless anyway. Even high settings are well above the approximate console settings.

@guitarist1980: Its still going to run the game at a ridiculous level.. 4k or not it's not always resolution. I want to see AA, lots of rich detail and I'm happy with that at 1440p or even 1080p. 4k or not this console is gonna be a beast and I cant wait!

In other words, he thinks he's got a clever way of convincing people of just how well they anticipate this thing will run 4K and just how confidant they are it will do so. It's seller's talk, but sort of inverted. Sort of like "I'm not going to call you an asshole" or "I refuse to tell you how stupid you are." The subtext isn't exactly hidden. Bless his little heart.

Right now (and for at least 3-4 years) 4K for under $600 is an utopia even if graphics settings aren't maxed out. It would be better and more realistic to aim for 1440p@60 and rely on upscaling techniques to fit 4K TVs.

@mrfriki: 4K is bull it's not necessary . The best thing for Sony and Ms is to push graphic and like the PS3 and Xbox360 shoot for the best graphics possible at a solid 30 or 60fps they should shoot for 1080p 30fps for all adventure games and just go nuts with the fx,lighting etc etc 4K is a performance hog that won't make games look much better if they made all games 4K and I'm playing them on my 1080p TV it would just be a PS4 game or xboxone game and on a 4K TV it would just be a sharper xboxone game but if they build Scorpio games for 30fps 1080p the graphics would be mind blowing we are talking about games that truly are a next step in graphics we are talking about games that make ryse look like a PS2 game

@emptycow718: yes I neither sold on 60fps it may play more fluid but it really make games like cheap TV shows. Maybe for players it's a must but I'm not a pro player I "just" want to have a great time with the games I play. I mean let's take Doom (@60) and Destiny (@30) as examples, I played the hell out of them and never felt that @60 fps were more fluid or controlled better.

That said with all the 4K TVs out there they are going to need raising the resolution somehow in the future. I envision indie games running at 4K and AAA or bigger games running at somewhere between 1080-4k @60, I'll rather go with 30 fps but that is what people is claiming for.
