Xbox One, PS4, PC Getting Open-World Dinosaur Survival Game

Jurassic Park meets DayZ.

Developer Wildcard Studios on Monday announced an open-world dinosaur game called Ark: Survival Evolved, and the first trailer does not disappoint. Take a look at the impressive video below, showing off the game's varied environments, combat mechanics, fantasy elements, and all manner of wild creatures.

Survival Evolved is currently in development for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. An in-development version of the PC edition will debut in June on Steam as an Early Access title.

Wildcard is a new company staffed by "veteran" designers, though it's unclear what games the team worked on previously. Whatever the case, the studio says many of its team members have been inspired by popular dinosaur movies like The Land Before Time, Dinotopia, and Jurassic Park.

The team has major ambitions for Survival Evolved, saying it hopes the game can be "one of the most ambitious hardcore large-scale survival experiences ever devised."

The PC version of Survival Evolved is slated to launch in full during summer 2016, though a release window for the console editions has not been announced.

Survival Evolved runs on Unreal Engine 4, and Wildcard says the footage in the new trailer is taken from "live online gameplay." The game will also support mods on PC, Wildcard explained on Facebook.

Just give us what we really want

I'm not looking forward to this at all. To me, it looks like a cheap attempt at beating others to the idea. I remember around the time Far Cry 4 came out, there was a poll somewhere that asked about what people would want to see in future Far Cry games. The overwhelming response was a game set on a lost island of dinosaurs. This company probably saw that and decided to rush a new game with that theme. Expect bad graphics, limited gameplay, and virtually no story. I think I'll pass on this one.

They can easily lower the quality of the graphics and run at 900p to 1080p resolutions and lock the FPS at 30 to 60 Fps for consoles like they already do and game will still look good enough to the average eye no matter how better it can look of course that Is if they want to which I bet they will because devs job is a lot easier when developing and optimizing for consoles and nevermind the chance for bigger profits. Remember between toolkits and fact that when developing for a console devs don't have to worry about the amount of and different hardware you have to on every pc unlike consoles all pcs aren't equal and don't have same operating system or hardware across that platform. That's why Devs can do and get a lot more out of consoles even with less as consoles surely never have the best hardware available yet they can do wonders and offer a lot more then the same hardware would on a pc and this is due to all these factors and how consoles operate. It allows them to use all of the resources available to them just for gaming while on PCs there's a lot more going on that they have to work around and fact that every pc can be very different from one another which is why every PC owner gets different issues and unlike consoles where if it's not a faulty hardware issue you can bet it's an issue accross every console in that platform so easier to patch and fix for devs. There's very good reason why consoles aren't fully customizable it's not because they can't be but because it's not needed and better for devs. Only differences that set consoles and pcs apart atm is the OS and fact that one is fully customizable and other ain't which can easily change if they wanted and will one day considering how much both PC and consoles have become a lot like one another and tried to gain each other's strengths. Either way graphics is not what determines if the game is good and no matter what platform it releases on or you play it on let's hope it's gonna be a great game and hopefully everyone will have access to it no matter what they can afford or like to play on.

A console release is a long time from now, considering a Computer using a Titan X can barely run this game at the graphics equal to that in this trailers. (At least 3 times more powerful than the PS4 or XO.)

Avatar image for egonbalder

@eternalgenesis: That would be funny, because it looks like a 2007 game texture and foliage wise

Avatar image for eternalgenesis

@egonbalder@eternalgenesis: I know right? It is on early access on steam right now. And the optimization is SOOO Bad at this point, its gonna take a loooong while.

Avatar image for yyrgx

@eternalgenesis@egonbalder: actually been able to run it with no issues so far. almost max settings, save for shadows on med and post processing and AA on high

I'd like this game a hell of a lot more if there was some kind of faction you could join where the sole purpose is to defend the more innocent dinosaurs from being used, killed, or extorted by the humans.

How much will it be?

Avatar image for OldDirtyCR

@korvus: Survival game with a loose storyline to keep you focused (similar to minecraft's enderdragon/water thing). The crystal in the dudes wrist alluded to a sinister plot going down and it thematically matched the design of the energy pillar. I'm not sure what you have against breaking in dinosaurs to ride them.

Dragons are awesome.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b797108c254e

@OldDirtyCR: The game is actually fun to play; my problem with it is that it feels like they grabbed a bunch of unrelated stuff and threw it in together...I'm half expecting their first content pack to be called "Fairies, lasers and accountants".

Avatar image for gen13

Just a fancy ripoff of Turok. Nothing original. I'll pass

Avatar image for gledr

very cool wondering if they will have a evolve type online where some people are dinosaurs and others hunters.

one problem you wouldn't want to shoot dinosaurs in the head thats their most heavily armored spot.

Avatar image for deivis_sc

This looks really amazing. Something I wanted for long time. Kinda don't like that sci-fi and fantasy aspect of the game, like fire dragons and some kind of alien things on your hand. Wanted more realistic, but it's cool, I don't mind, I like sci-fi and fantasy anyway. What I don't like is Early Access. I hate that thing, it takes forever to be finished, performance usually really bad, even if they are finished and there is already ton of Early Access survival games. Pretty much every survival game. No proper survival games. Like Coffee Stain Studios made joke when released GoatZ DLC for Goat Simulator "Only survival game that is not in Early Access".

Other things Online aspect of the game. But since someone here in comments that game will have single-player so its fine. For me personally all that online survival destroys all the fun of the game. It becomes just a huge mess with lots of players going on the killing spree.

I want a pet Titanboa snake, Megalodon shark, of course a Trex which will be hard to obtain, and fly on a giant Dragonfly! :D

You can't have a pet Dragon yet, because it would easily overpower all other creatures, unless they manage to balance it.

Avatar image for chris0004090

Actually what I really want to ride is a pet Dodo. :P Come on guys let me race you with my small Dodo bird!

Avatar image for alhassan

thats wht i have been imagining for years :P

The screenshot of the guy chasing the scantily clad girl with a pickaxe looks like me on a saturday night.

this game seriously looks like a post version of the game called B.C! look it up, obviously the graphics have changed and it looks a little different, but i can't but help that they got inspiration from that game!

Well a game with such detailed mechanics as using slave excrement for fertilizer has my interest

Avatar image for Mirimon78

Slave excrement?... carnivorous creatures make bad fertilizer, if anything they make toxins and require excessive treatment and additives to begin to be a fertilizer.

Avatar image for chris0004090

@Mirimon78: Apparently players can poop in this game.... and it can be used as fertilizer....

Avatar image for Mirimon78

Hm.... well, this isn't based on the most sound science.. or basic agricultural knowledge....

Avatar image for OldDirtyCR

@Mirimon78: Have you done any research on this? Up to 50% of all human waste is currently used as fertilizer for crops currently. It's treated (by heating it up and drying it out) and then can be applied to crops.

There are even specific laws and guidelines for using human waste as fertilizer. It's perfectly legal.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

I am intimately familiar with the ancient practices of using "nightsoil"... and legality depends on several factors as well as the fact that because something is legal it does not mean it is safe. It actually takes a lot of work to produce sufficient and safe fertilizer from human waste... a significant amount of labor. The immediate issues are diseases, viruses, pathogens, heavy metals.. and since this comes from ylus it instantly means we are vulnerable to them. The other issues are the ph and absense of actual nutrients beneficial to agriculture, and so the compost must be heavily augmented to not kill plant life and more so to make it valuable to plants. In most cases in the US it is mandated that nightsoil based products are used for growing what we won't eat.. as in corn used for fuel and plastics, topiary etc.... countries today still use some of this for food, and it shows in the hospitals and graveyards from those infected...

For us, and for these fictitious humans in a world of dinosaurs, it would be more appropriate, easier, and abundant to simply collect waste from local herbivorous creatures.

Avatar image for spec24

@Mirimon78: What makes you think the slaves eat meat?

Avatar image for JayQproductions

Can't find anything about the developer so that makes me think this is a very well done scam. Also, it's PVP focused so that kills any interest I had in it.

Avatar image for spec24

@JayQproductions: there's also single player.

Avatar image for sten818

@spec24@JayQproductions: Survivle game often do not have single player

Avatar image for chris0004090

@sten818@spec24@JayQproductions: This game does have single player.

On Steam Ark: Survival Evolved FAQ << LINK REMOVED >>

"The game is both online Multi-player (with persistent official and custom player-hosted servers), and with a Local Single-player option as well."

Avatar image for Mirimon78

Pvp killed the dinosaurs..

Avatar image for g4m1ngon

@JayQproductions: Go on Steam and find me at least ONE early access game which will have trailer like this... you will not find even one close to it. All "dino-games" on early access are scam so far, but ARK looks very promising and already polished.

Avatar image for chris0004090

I heard that on pvp servers, you'll be able to capture other players and even eat them. When your logged out your person remains in the game unconscious where other players can drag you off or loot you, the only way to escape your captors is suicide, rescue or some other ways.

Avatar image for chris0004090

On Steam

ARK: Survival Evolved FAQ << LINK REMOVED >>

(When you log off your character, or if you suffer serious trauma, or eat the wrong thing, your body becomes unconscious. This will allow other Survivors to interact with you. They can steal your items, kill you, and even feed you! But there's something else you can do in ARK... you can drag their ragdoll sleeping body around... move it to wherever you want... even move it into a prison cell and enslave it (or just put it in a very dangerous position for when it awakes)... you can force-feed an unconscious person food & water to keep them alive....

and by enslaving, we mean:

You can physically confine them and keep them alive indefinitely if you maintain their health. You can then do such useful things as extracting blood from them to create transfusion items, or using their poop as fertilizer, etc.

Something to also keep in mind is that when you're logged-out, you don't lose water/food status. However, if you're logged-in, you do. So if someone is logged-in and is trying to starve or dehydrate themselves to death, you can force-feed them food to keep them alive in your prison.)

Avatar image for spec24

@chris0004090: feed them, not eat them. I'm not sure how much fun playing as someone else's slave would be... like zero fun.

Avatar image for chris0004090

@spec24@chris0004090: There is also cannibalism in this game, you can harvest meat off dead players, cook their meat and eat them. You can also feed captured players to your carnivorous pets. :)

Avatar image for spec24

@chris0004090@spec24: I'll be damned . That seems pretty risque, even for video games. I don't think even GTA has cannibalism. I can't wait to hear the outrage over this one :) Now where's my barbecue...

Avatar image for Roland3710

This seems worth following to see how it pans out but I'm not sure how I feel about the fantasy elements. If you already have dinosaurs in the game what do you need dragons for?

Avatar image for Mindwipe77

keep my eye out for it, not terribly interested yet though

Avatar image for sten818

Looks like a little bit of an RPG to me...

Avatar image for thedarkoil

The dinosaur riding looks a bit dodgy but those graphics are seriously impressive.

Avatar image for sten818

@thedarkoil: Remember it is still in development

Is Dick Cheney a playable character? Comes with negative 300 shotgun aiming ability.

Avatar image for Expane

Another hunting game? People surviving and using weapons to kill animals, how innovative?

Avatar image for IanNottinghamX

I love the idea but I dont like the design of the areas they looked too closed. I hate when the Rat maze style designs are used when theres no longer a need for rat maze design with the powerful hardware we have nowadays.
I wanted to see open world, natural environment-like design.

Avatar image for blprater

I am in as long as it is truly an open world survival game.
