Xbox One Is "Literally a Windows Device"

"It is not a separate animal."

Microsoft considers the Xbox One to be "literally a Windows device," sitting alongside Windows PCs and phones. That's according to Microsoft EVP and chief marketing officer Chris Capossela, who said during a recent presentation that he doesn't consider the Xbox One to be a "separate animal" in the Windows family.

"A core power metric for us is Windows 10 devices. That's not PC statement," he said during the Citi Global Technology Conference (via Dualshockers). "That will be phones, that will be tablets, that will be laptops, that will be desktops, that will be big surface hubs that will be Xboxes. Xboxes today run Windows and so every time we sell an Xbox we're actually creating a Windows active device that hopefully people love it; it's a gaming device in their living room. It is not a separate animal. It is literately a Windows device."

The Xbox One runs on a version of Windows. Later this year, however, the Xbox One will become more fully integrated with Windows 10. Microsoft hasn't announced a release date for Windows 10 on Xbox One, though Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said not to expect this until "post-summer."

Microsoft announced back in January that Windows 10 would be integrated into Xbox One by way of a future update. Spencer assured fans at the time that when the Windows 10 Xbox One update arrives, it won't morph the games console into an enterprise-centric device.

How it will operate is unclear, and whether it will come with a dashboard rearrangement is not known.

"We won't see people using Excel on the Xbox, but Microsoft is making it easier to port experiences from PC over to Xbox where they make sense," Spencer said at the time.

Microsoft's vision for Windows 10 is to reach 1 billion devices by 2018. The new operating system launched at the end of July as a follow-up to Window 8 (there was no Windows 9). As of the end of August, Windows 10 had reached 75 million installs.

@Sevenizz: You know you're seeing a BS argument when "jealousy" is so easily thrown about. Next you'll probably say something about "butthurt", or "haters". You might as well not even bother.

It sounds like he thinks the perception of the Xbox One as a Windows device will help boost sales or something.

Guys, get a clue. They don't mean a desktop version of windows 10. Only the basic framework and probably the kernel. The GUI will most likely be an updated version of the current one. Look at the 360. Anyone remember the blade system? That was junk. The final OS is far superior though the guide menu lag is game killing. Every update just gets better and better, adding new features. Right now, Xbox One runs windows 8 but it is only some framework. I think it will be the same for windows 10. I've owned both consoles, PS4 and Xbox One. The Xbox can do so much more. It is easier to join parties, and just about everything. It was built to multitask, versus the PS4 is a game console, just that. If you don't care about the extras then get a PS4. If you don't like Kinect, get a PS4, If you care about 100 extra pixels, that you really can't tell the difference on (except for high anti aliasing games where the Xbox does not run any), the get a PS4 and stop complaining about a console that you obviously could care less about. I am an older gamer in my 30s and love that the Xbox can do so much. It says to me that the company cares about what I think is important... quality online play, backwards compatibility, movies & tv, quality friendships, game broadcasting, ease of use, and who knows what is to come. Updates are awesome in my book, shows the company is evolving the console to fit the consumer's needs. And they do listen to the community, just not the dumb comment you just made below this post.

@tecguyv4: That was well put man. I'm in my forties and appreciate how things are evolving with these consoles. The NES days seem like the caveman days now, huh?

Sign these consoles were rushed to market #1422-B:

Microsoft started selling theirs before the final OS was even ready.

Oh, so is this Microsoft's new excuse about how they're supporting PC gaming for real this time?

"We support the Xbox, it's Windows, so we're supporting PC gaming!"

Of course as usual ANY positive review / news concerning the XB1 is absolutely devastating to the delusional PS4 fanboi.

PS4 fanboi thought process:

"Oh no!!?!!!!?? People are going to learn that the XB1 is a lot more than just a gaming device and may decide to purchase a XB1 and not a PS4".

"Maybe my PS4 really isn't the best thing since sliced bread and this makes my vag hurt"...

wouldn't surprise me either, don't know if the xbox 1 will fried like the 360 when you leave the plug in without a surge protector, that what happen to me and my wii and bros.'s ps3 survive that power outage.

@nintendians: That sounds more like bad luck. The brick has a surge protector and shouldn't be plugged into one.

@xabbott: never plug into one, just one of those that let you plug in cords, anyway since then I left the plug off after that happened when I got it back, but I already give it to my younger uncles but I kept perfect dark zero, because I'm a fan of rare ltd. (the past rare).

@xabbott: no, it most certainly should be.

Not only did the 360 suffer various issues such as rrod, but the power bricks and even power cords were later known to be fatally faulty, causing several house fires and even a few deaths...

@nintendians: haha, there were a few, msft has put a gag order in action for news sites that had the reports archived online a couple years ago, the way around this now is through physical archives.

The issue in question happened in a few states, and several outside the US. It was not ever an issue of inappropriate surge protector/extension port use, it was all 100% critical failure with power cords and with power bricks.

@nintendians: it's always about the money, always, everything else good or bad is simply an effect resylting from the need to profit. A company won't do anything philanthropic unless it betters their image to increase customer base and thus increase profit. Such things are also usually done only after some damage has occurred to said image. It may seem shameful, but it really is a fact of life, we do only to gain.

@Mirimon78: The surge protector thing is from microsoft themselves. Apparently the brick itself has a surge protector. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/system/connect-power-supply

  • Plug the other end of the AC cord into a wall outlet

Note Plug directly into a wall outlet, not into a power strip or surge protector.

@xabbott: except the warranry does not cover the event of an electrical surge. And I wouldn't expect msft to be any good at keeping my house from burning down at night, again surge protection is a must.

@nintendians The Xbox One has a built in surge protector, it is actually more harmful to it plugging it in to a surge protector. So plug it directly into the wall.

Then why can't I use Excel on it?

It's a low-tier computer that can only run certain applications.

@pyro1245: You actually will be able to at some point. The X1 is actually being marketed to enterprises to be able to do exactly that, running their productivity suite with a keyboard and mouse in between your gaming or teleconference sessions.

@Thanatos2k: There's a lot of things like sweepstakes and contests that you open from games or the dashboard that go to internet explorer pages to view/enter them. I've used it for watching videos from websites too. It works really well id you're using it in conjunction with smart glass.
