Xbox One GPU speed increased since E3, says Microsoft

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten speaks about some changes and additions Microsoft has made to the Xbox One since E3, including a 53MHz bump to the GPU speed.

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten has spoken about some of the changes and additions Microsoft is making to the current Xbox One development kits, including an increase to the GPU's clock speed and a new graphics driver.

No Caption Provided

Speaking on the podcast of Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Whitten said, "This is the time, and this is the thing I think people are going to see as we get into Gamescom and people get their first look at new things since E3. This is the time where developers have the final dev kits in their hands, they're really working closely with us on how things have come together. There's some things that have really started to come together quite well."

Whitten also said that Microsoft's internal beta for the Xbox One was currently running and that the hardware manufacturer was releasing daily builds for the console's operating system.

New additions to the Xbox One hardware since it was last shown at E3 include a new graphics driver and an increase to the GPU's clock speed, says Whitten.

"Since E3, an example is that we've dropped in what we internally call our mono driver. It's our graphics driver that really is 100 percent optimised for the Xbox One hardware. You start with the base [DirectX] driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have really picked it up now, and I think it's made a really nice improvement."

"This is the time where we've gone from the theory of how the hardware works--what do we think the yield is going to look like, what is the thermal envelope, how do things come together--to really having them in our hands. That's the time where you start tweaking the knobs. Either your theory was right dead on, or you were a little too conservative, or you were a little too aggressive. It's actually been really good news for us, and an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800MHz to 853MHz."

The Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/£425.

100000 Mhz boost with no problem eh? sure... for about 5 seconds before it melts. I would go so far as to say you are a "PC noob" to make such a retarded claim, but that would be an insult to PC noobs.

@jchristenberry The current decent PC GPU's run an approximately 1.0 Ghz. A 100000 Mhz boost would mean a 100Ghz overclock to 101 Ghz

That is a 10000% overclock. Its not possible, not even for a split second.

Just ignore these types of people. He is probably 10 years old.

this is pathetic Nvidia or other 3D video card companies will always have the best GPU`S for pc`s before consoles EVER!!! so stop even trying an attempt of doing this ¬¬ , and what exactly they think this will help since what i hate is flashy but boring games no matter the GPU speed if its boring as hell it will remain like that no matter the speed r even the updated graphics and actually this actually will bother game devs for the last time changes!!!???? are u practicing self Crushing Microsoft?? what changed you?? oh wait yeah money sorry keep doing this : )

The folks at MS are getting desperate, there's no simpler way of putting it. Has there ever been a system that has made so many changes to it's architecture before it's release? It's not good for developers who want and need a fully finished development kit to begin making games for the system and they have to compensate for a changing system.

@robertcain I will claim the psone, from being the first cdrom disc based nintendo prototype to Sony's first iteration into console gaming with full 3d efx, crom based system. But definitely get your point.

@robertcain These modifications are modest at best. I think they made modifications to the 360 before release as well but did not do a good job of making sure those last minute modifications would work, hence, the red ring of death that appeared all too often on so many systems. This time around they appear to have made modifications to the driver and GPU that will not result in a massive crash of the entire Xbox One.

@bigmikeOK If there was last minute changes in the X360 back then, that had nothing to do with the ailure rates.
It is proven that mainly the bad solder was the cause

@sladakrobot @bigmikeOK That was blamed on the fact that they made last minute changes to the architecture.

He only listed two examples publicly. Who knows what other improvements have been made to the Xbox One. The 53MHz example is minimal at best. However, as a PC builder, the graphics driver may be a substantial improvement for the Xbox One. I can't tell you how many times I've seen drastic improvements with graphics cards in PC's I've built after an upgrade in the driver from sometimes very weak 1st version driver releases. I'm hoping he'll give more information about upgrades that were made on Xbox One but I'm most looking forward to the games that I'll be able to play and in the future.

@torrne667 @kalpesh_78 If you think about it the Xbox One is still in the design/development phase and millions need to be mass produced by November. Those buying from that first lot are going to be the beta test. So the equivalent to the RRoD is more than likely.

@torrne667 @zintarr @kalpesh_78 you could explain this for hours to zintarr and yea still wouldnt get it, ITS NOT A HARDWARE OR DESIGN CHANGE! Its a simple Driver application that changes nothing except for a very slight speed boost. This will in no way affect manufacturing in any way shape or form, please learn how software updates work and go away.

@zintarr @torrne667 @kalpesh_78 also..if you read it properly, the first batch is the same hardwarewise as the forthcoming batches, it is a software tweak for a driver, not a physical process, so noone will be getting a different chipset :)

@zintarr @torrne667 @kalpesh_78 As i have said before, the RROD wasnt a hardware or driver fault..it was a MANUFACTURING fault, a plastic film on the heatsink was not removed thus making the system not transfer the heat and red ring.
