Xbox One GPU speed increased since E3, says Microsoft

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten speaks about some changes and additions Microsoft has made to the Xbox One since E3, including a 53MHz bump to the GPU speed.

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten has spoken about some of the changes and additions Microsoft is making to the current Xbox One development kits, including an increase to the GPU's clock speed and a new graphics driver.

No Caption Provided

Speaking on the podcast of Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Whitten said, "This is the time, and this is the thing I think people are going to see as we get into Gamescom and people get their first look at new things since E3. This is the time where developers have the final dev kits in their hands, they're really working closely with us on how things have come together. There's some things that have really started to come together quite well."

Whitten also said that Microsoft's internal beta for the Xbox One was currently running and that the hardware manufacturer was releasing daily builds for the console's operating system.

New additions to the Xbox One hardware since it was last shown at E3 include a new graphics driver and an increase to the GPU's clock speed, says Whitten.

"Since E3, an example is that we've dropped in what we internally call our mono driver. It's our graphics driver that really is 100 percent optimised for the Xbox One hardware. You start with the base [DirectX] driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have really picked it up now, and I think it's made a really nice improvement."

"This is the time where we've gone from the theory of how the hardware works--what do we think the yield is going to look like, what is the thermal envelope, how do things come together--to really having them in our hands. That's the time where you start tweaking the knobs. Either your theory was right dead on, or you were a little too conservative, or you were a little too aggressive. It's actually been really good news for us, and an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800MHz to 853MHz."

The Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/£425.

@berserker66666 because a 50mhz bump is going to bridge the gap between what we saw at e3 and what they actually have under the hood...

@leviathanwing @berserker66666 it's just some publicity stunt in regard to the supposed specs inferiority of the cable box compared to the PS4

@leviathanwing @berserker66666 The heat generated by the GPU will be more noticable than the performance bump.

@pezzott1 @leviathanwing @berserker66666 yeah it's kind of a pointless bump, they are just adding more degrees to the GPU with basically no noticeable gain.

@b74kd3th I'm afraid most AAA games will be locked at the usual 30fps.

@dribblesbarbax @b74kd3th how would you know the consoles haven't even come out and don't go on about the tests already done on games that haven't even came out yet I watched the videos about the games only being 30fps news flash none of those games are completely finished so for all you know they could end up being 60fps and most likely will

@tom2750 Most likely they wont. Youre asking for a performance boost of 100% to get to 60fps from 30fps in a matter of months. Some devs have come out and said that they see 30fps being the norm these days. A lot of the current gen still run at 30-45fps when a select few running at 60fps. Capcom games usually hit the 60 mark. In order to see a big graphical difference between current gen and next gen, games will have to run at a lower framerate in order to produce the necessary effects.

@tom2750 Many developers have said that 30fps will be norm for most games. Few games will use 60fps. CoD games do but thats why they look graphically bare. Remember I didnt say all games but most games. There will always be the exceptions. Capcom like locking games to 60fps when they can. Bethesda 30fps. Dice 30fps. These are just off the top of my head. Plus saying that games that have been shown running at 30fps now could run at 60fps when released is unrealistic. Your saying somehow they have managed to find an extra 100% performance in a matter of months.

@pezzott1 @Random_Matt @dribblesbarbax @b74kd3th I know, like to future proof for 3 - 5 years. There was someone bragging about quad titans yesterday, not sure if it was believable.

i wonder if theyve announced this a bit too early. the ps4 also runs at 800mhz. i wonder if the sony engineers are now furiously retesting to see if they can squeeze a few extra mhz too!

Really wont make a noticeable difference to anything. I've been overclocking various parts of my PC's for a long time now and that is not much of an increase. It would want to reach 900mhz before you'd notice anything.

I was hoping this rumor was true, I seriously doubt the RAM one was but this is a nice little bonus for the X One. I'm sure people will hate but at least MS is being more intelligent and there's not so many negative articles anymore.

This this was a good move from MS. Definitely stating they heard the feedback and making the necessary changes to stay competitive. See what happens when gamers actually "unite" (used very loosely) on a cause. Stuff can change. Sadly, this is a VERY rare circumstance.

Still think Major Nelson is a prick though and acts like it constantly. Especially after the whole E3 incident. The irony of him saying the devs can't remove the check-ins and right after E3 they said they would.

So after E3 and realizing that their console was underpowered, they bumped it up. Good call. If they can finally make the Kinect optional I'd be interested

Here come the haters to this announcement. We still dont know the final specs and the rumors on the GPU gettting bumped up some were true. Now I wonder about the RAM...also I also wonder about the embedded RAM specs about 190GB/s..but it doesnt matter..games do... and games is what we will play!!

@MCTJim to be fair its literally a single digit gain in performance... and thats performance only and even less for actual games.
