Xbox One GPU speed increased since E3, says Microsoft

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten speaks about some changes and additions Microsoft has made to the Xbox One since E3, including a 53MHz bump to the GPU speed.

Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten has spoken about some of the changes and additions Microsoft is making to the current Xbox One development kits, including an increase to the GPU's clock speed and a new graphics driver.

No Caption Provided

Speaking on the podcast of Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Whitten said, "This is the time, and this is the thing I think people are going to see as we get into Gamescom and people get their first look at new things since E3. This is the time where developers have the final dev kits in their hands, they're really working closely with us on how things have come together. There's some things that have really started to come together quite well."

Whitten also said that Microsoft's internal beta for the Xbox One was currently running and that the hardware manufacturer was releasing daily builds for the console's operating system.

New additions to the Xbox One hardware since it was last shown at E3 include a new graphics driver and an increase to the GPU's clock speed, says Whitten.

"Since E3, an example is that we've dropped in what we internally call our mono driver. It's our graphics driver that really is 100 percent optimised for the Xbox One hardware. You start with the base [DirectX] driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have really picked it up now, and I think it's made a really nice improvement."

"This is the time where we've gone from the theory of how the hardware works--what do we think the yield is going to look like, what is the thermal envelope, how do things come together--to really having them in our hands. That's the time where you start tweaking the knobs. Either your theory was right dead on, or you were a little too conservative, or you were a little too aggressive. It's actually been really good news for us, and an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800MHz to 853MHz."

The Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/£425.

So the standings:

PS4 still has better RAM (faster and 500mb more theoretically) better GPU (and faster), smaller, no power brick. Cost: $400.

Xb1 is bigger, still has a power brick, controller still uses AA batteries, won't include headset, less power. Cost: $500.

Chose for yourselves

@Centurion-Legio the xbox one's power brick is built in too. Also, we still live in the age of batteries and will for a long time, what does that matter? Xbox comes with more hardware as well (kinect).

Sounds like you are just trying too hard. PS4 so far has slightly better specs, that's all you got. Is it going to make that much of a difference? I doubt you would notice a damn thing.

@CraZkid37 @Centurion-Legio actually the fact the ps3 controllers had rechargeable built in batteries was a factor in my purchasing choices this generation. There is no good reason for the xbone not to follow Sony's example and have built in rechargeable batteries in their controllers. Now that they have fixed the Dpad on the xbone controllers it would make them damn near the best controller ever.

Then again I've yet to get my hands on a dualshock 4 and they made a hell of a lot of changes so who knows how that will feel. I'm just damn glad the controllers can recharge while the console is off now it was kind of annoying to have to charge them while playing.

@Centurion-Legio It doesn't matter if PS vita is better than 3DS or not if it got no games. Same goes for ps4 and xb1. PS4 hasn't announced any titles that got gamers attention. XB1 got dead rising 3, Ryze, Halo 5, and Quantum Break. Wii U got pikmin 3, wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and Zelda. To me, both wii u and xb1 worth more than ps4 as of now.

@JoonKimDMD @Centurion-Legio Games are going to come slowly, the system is going to stay the same!....so who cares about your game opinion. Ps4 has more potential, and as much as i liked my Xbox 360 im going to stick to my Ps this time for the simple titles ONLY on PS....you like your titles, and i like mines. Point.

When you do the actual math that's not much of a difference of any real note. In fact since most all the games for launch were already well into development it's not going to make any difference at all.

Developers getting used to using the actual systems will have a far more substantial impact. This is just MS trying to use lines like "Billions of transistors" to puff things up to look bigger then they are.

For the consoles players who aren't familiar with overclocking 53mhz is basically nothing... effect that will have on frame rate or heat output is negligible.

@Accuracy158 Actually to clarify - overclocking a gpu and cpu by 53mhz really isn't much, but on a dedicated console whois architecture is setup to output games written for the extra power, that 7% can mean alot.

For instance - you tweak out your tractor gaining 7% to run a after market bush-hog to cut a field. It may or may not help that much, but imagine designing a bush-hog for a tractor that already has 7% built in - If done right it can be quite an upgrade.

While no matter what that 53mhz can or cannot do, it is worth bragging about if only barely.

Honestly not really news worthy, though a vauge preformance boost is good, even though our eyes would never be able to tell the difference. Why gamespot would even report on this, no clue. Though its nice to see so many PS4 fans buzzing obsenities toward MS, really wouldnt be an xbox one article without them... as they make up around 80% of comments these days, dont you have Last of Us to go rage that it got an 8.0 or something? CAUSE I WAS OUTRAGED AT THAT! and im not even a big play station fan lol.

Back on the note of the 53mHz thing, nice they are tweaking it but really? 53mHz? Not that big of a deal.

Seems like history is repeating itself yet again. Last generation they said the same things about the PS3 . That it was going to be more powerful than the 360. That the specs was superior to the rival console. Come on guys,Sony is just as guilty with there PR 7gb reserved for gaming anyone? and we know how that turned out. Far to many people underestimating the X1 and the horses are not even out the gate yet.

@Centurion-Legio @Mista4oewun4oe I think he's referring to the fact that in several Gamespot tests certain games on both systems looked better on 360 and that if they didn't look better then it was so close as to not even matter. That's why while on paper the PS3 is more powerful because of the DirectX for the 360 squeezing so much power out of the 360 it was usually a tie.

Is this some sort of fail PR stunt from M$?

"Yo guise. Guise! We jacked the GPU speed by 53MHz! Sick aye?! ....Guise?"

The truth is that a 54MHz increase would have meant RROD. So I'm assuming a 853MHz clock is the absolute limit they can push it?

@Busta @fazilchik yes lets compare luxury sedans that cost between 60 to 90 thousand dollars to two electronic entertainment consoles that have a 100 dollar margin! Sound work there, your wit is unparell! Could have used something a little less exsessive and still made your point. Though yes it would be pretty expensive however youd still be paying less than most of us PC gamers with highend rigs out there. I will probably save up a bit and buy both, but the second will come later.

53hz more will not cause overheating. The Xbox One has a giant heat sink, and I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft planned this from the beginning just to go all "hohey it only gets better."

Kim, there is nothing wrong with voicing opinions (very critical ones) about companies that create your favorite devices, consoles, games, etc.

It's healthy. They aren't people. They're out to make profit and will step on you if you don't step on them.

It makes for better products. There's no hate here.

@BradBurns although id have to question your statement about there being no hate "here" (as in at gamespot as a whole), many kids here tend to make statements and imply that they are fact, not opinion and not theory when it is blatantly obvious, im not talking about people that actually know their stuff (people who are familiar with overclocking their processors and what the process all means). those are the ones that this message is geared towards.

The 53mhz clock increase not making any difference?.That's based on 8 years of experience in overclocking and 2 fried cards along the way.I can't stand PR bullshit not matter of it's MS ,Sony or whatever the company.Be upfront about the product you're selling and don't treat your consumer like clueless sheep.

That clock speed increase wasn't news worthy.

It is crazy that there are so many negative post thinking a 53MHz bump to the GPU speed is a bad thing. If would be a negative thing if it was a decrease in speed. I don't know if you don't it or not but programmers love more power. They also love it when they are getting more power than what they thought they were getting at first. This is not a negative as fanboys would like to think. This is a postive.

@smurfa1 @frozenux @Hozzyboy @tmorri603 Oh i bet you are, because going from 58 or 59 to 60 frame/s(and that's me being generous) is going to make ALL the difference...You will be sooo able to see it.This isn't about divination,it's about trial and error with various amd and nvidia chips from past experience. You can go around any overclocking forums and ask the question, they will be probably be laughing at your face but you will get your answer.

Like i already said below, the focus should be on the software optimization, not some PR ploy to present this as some kind major HARDWARE news.

As a programmer I can tell you that a slight performance boost can be the difference of 60 FPS and <60.

@Ra-Maxima It won't help improve the graphics, but it will theoretically help the game run smoother at whatever level of graphics they decide to run it at, but the difference will be so small it won't really do much.

@Warful @Ra-Maxima Game run smoother? lol oh please. It won't do a thing,it's just some PR move to re-assure the uninformed potential consumers in all this PS4 vs Xbox one specs talks( i thought specs didn't mater lol)

When it comes down to increase a Gpu base clock you need to cross the 15% increase(let alone 6% increase in the xone case) for a "hope" of performance gain. And even if you do,it's usually barely noticeable.50% increase is where the sweetness at.

The fact that they couldn't even hit the 15% show probably that the Gpu is already running quite hot.To bring it to substantial gain they would have to add additional cooling which would imply more money per unit and probably a redesign of the console.

Software optimization is where they should focus and not trying to serve people Specs PR BS.

@Warful @frozenux @Ra-Maxima yeah because the ps3 being way more powerful and having more complex chips than the xbox made the games run and look better...oh no..wait..that sentence was utter bullshit because the ps3 bottlenecked and struggled with a shitload of games that the 360 ran in its sleep. Its not all about power, its how the os handles and performs. behave yourself and stop spreading nonsense.

@frozenux @Warful @Ra-Maxima uhm.. not to spoil your comment here.. But I am fully aware of all this, I did say "theoretically". Also just upping the clock speed won't bring much difference at all, especially compared to the PS4 GPU having 1152 cores, vs the 764 in the Xbox One, then a measly increase of 53Mhz on clock speeds can go to hell.
