Now Playing: Xbox One Adds Two New Backwards-Compatible Games - GS News Update

Microsoft continues to roll out new backwards compatible games for Xbox One. Two more Xbox 360 titles are now playable on the current-gen console, and this time both are from Konami's Silent Hill series: Silent Hill HD Collection and Silent Hill: Homecoming.

Silent Hill HD Collection was originally released for Xbox 360 (as well as PS3) back in 2012. It includes high-definition remasters of Silent Hill 2 and 3, as well as the Born From a Wish bonus chapter for the former. GameSpot awarded the package a 7/10 in our original Silent Hill HD Collection review and called it "a convenient way for fans to experience the series' early years on modern hardware."

Silent Hill: Homecoming, meanwhile, is the sixth installment in the series. It was first released in 2008 and casts players in the role of Alex Shepard, a soldier returning home from war to find his brother missing and his hometown consumed by evil. GameSpot awarded it a 6.5/10 in our original review and said, "Silent Hill: Homecoming, while quite a departure from the psychological horror that fans are used to, is still a decent, occult-themed action game."

If you still own a physical copy of either title, you can simply pop the disc into your Xbox One and begin playing. Alternately, if you've previously purchased either of the games digitally, they will automatically appear in the Ready to Download section of Xbox One's My Games and Apps menu. Both titles are also available to download from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has been releasing a steady stream of new backwards compatible games for Xbox One since the feature was first introduced in 2015. More than 400 Xbox 360 games are now backwards compatible with the console, along with a selection of original Xbox games.

You can see all of the BC titles available for Xbox One in our full list of backwards compatibility games. For recommendations on which ones are worth playing, be sure to check out our gallery of the best Xbox One backwards compatible games.

I'm actually like and respect how M$ has implemented the BC on the XB1 especially since it encourages game history and preservation compared to Sony's attempt at cloud gaming w/ older titles

Sometimes you have to take 1 step back in order to move 2 steps forward.

Congrats Team Xbox on doing right and giving the fans what they want. Many of these BC games feature single player and strong narratives. Exactly what's missing in today's games. Thank you!

@Terminator95: Yeah because the present and future are soooo good...

Backwards compatibility is a great feature, no way to argue against it.

Are they going to (finally) fix the Silent Hill HD Collection or just drop that broken piece of **** on XBOne?

Avatar image for timothyss10

@fanboyman: they gave up on it and offered refunds to any who actually got it, makes me wonder if the xb1 at least helps the frame rate issue.

@fanboyman: That HD collection is unfixable, it will be forever an abomination.

It's like they're giving you a glass of cat piss with dog's turd (Silent Hill HD Collection) and they're saying "Here you go, son! Have fun!"

I love the SH franchise, but goddamn, this port is an atrocious buggy ass remaster. DO NOT BUY IT, especially because a lot of these bugs were never fixed on the 360 version.

@xandxdurx2: Several 360 games still receive updates far after their released.

Avatar image for xandxdurx2

@Sam3231: Ahm...i don't think you know that Konami itself released an official statement saying that they wouldn't patch the Xbox 360 version of the game, only the PS3 version, back in 2012. You can still find the news on Google. That's why i said what i said on my original post. They only patched the PS3 version.

@xandxdurx2: Not googling it at all, I think you are wrong.

Avatar image for xandxdurx2

@Sam3231: I really don't care if you think i'm wrong or not, i'm stating a fact. They never patched the 360 version of the game. If you don't want to look for yourself what i just said, that's fine. I don't care.

Am I the only person who plays these games on the consoles they were designed for?

Avatar image for Blueresident87
Blueresident87

@VirtualTofu: Not at all. Whenever possible I play a game on the console it was designed for. BC is just a great thing for people who don't have that luxury.

Avatar image for jacobia70
jacobia70

@VirtualTofu: Nope, I have got SH2, 3, 4 and Origins for my PS2. And for my PS3, I’ve the HD Collection, Homecoming and Downpour. Not 100% relevant to your question, but I’ve also got a digital copy only of the first SH, which I play on my Vita.

Dear Konami, please pour some financial love back into what is, in my opinion, not only your best IP, but the best horror video game IP 🙏🙏🙏

@Blueresident87: Yeah, I think you’re probably right there, but you never know, somewhere in their hierarchy there may be someone who has a 💡 moment....away from their pachinko machines 😉

@VirtualTofu: I do. If I played this on xb1 it would be through the ps1 emulator running my original copy.

I'm shocked they ported that broken ass Silent Hill collection before the Metal Gear Solid one.

Avatar image for Sam3231

@Zazabar: Agreed. I am fucking itching for the Metal Gear Solid one. Would you believe they ported Peace Walker WITHOUT MGS 2 and 3?

Avatar image for AlabamaFan92
AlabamaFan92

@Sam3231: We will be getting the MSG collection as some point. Peace Walker shows that Konami is willing to let Microsoft make their game backwards compatible.

Avatar image for xandxdurx2
xandxdurx2

@Zazabar: Broken ass is an understatement. Holy shit. This game is completely broken. Also, they didn't release the patch that fixed like 3% of the bugs included in the game for the Xbox 360 , which means that anyone unfortunate enough to buy this thing will suffer...a lot

Avatar image for AlabamaFan92
AlabamaFan92

@xandxdurx2: I played it. It's fine. Definitely has issues(3 more so than 2), but is still a great collection.

Avatar image for xandxdurx2
xandxdurx2

@AlabamaFan92: A lot of people still having problems with the game crashing or having their save data corrupted. It could happen to you or not. PS3 version might be less buggy. Can't really blame Hijinx studio, they were handed an unfinished build of the game to work with.

Avatar image for Blueresident87

@AlabamaFan92: I agree. I've completed both games, minimal complaints.

This is sweet news Silent hill 2 was great, but can we please have Ninja Gaiden 2 and can we please xnhance these titles as they look like shit on 4k screen.

Avatar image for anodyn3

@krazeekhujo05: there’s no excuse for Ninja Gaiden 2 & Ninja Gaiden 3:Razor’s Edge not being BC yet. The ONLY reason it would be ok is if theyre planning remastered versions

Avatar image for krazeekhujo05

@anodyn3: I only played Ninja Gaiden 3 and I was in shock of how shallow it was compared to the first 2 games.

Avatar image for anodyn3
Anodyn3

@krazeekhujo05: yeah i never played the original NG3 (i actually played a short demo & it sucked) because the reviews & demo sucked. But they really fixed it with the ‘Razor’s Edge’ version. To me, it is truly on par with Ninja Gaiden Black & NG2. In some ways, BETTER in fact. A really great game

Geez even more backwards compat games, I dunno seems like the Xbox ecosystem is pretty strong these days.

I c'mon Xbox what in gods world am I supposed to do with all these games? I can't possibly play them all!

Avatar image for neoistheone
Neoistheone

@Sam3231: yeah. Some games like fight night can only be played on older consoles. You don't have to play them but if you want to you can. I probably won't play these though.

Silent Hill is a great addition to the catalog of other great games, but it would be cool if Microsoft can add these classics to Game Pass.Halo:Reach also please?

Avatar image for filmauteur100

@brimmul777:

I doubt if microsoft will do that for awhile. Their goal is to make money or at least break even with game pass. 85% of the games on game pass are subpar games that have a hard time selling for less than 10 dollars on a flash sale. They have a handful of great games on there, but that is just so the service doesnt look like garbage. This is coming from an xbox one s fan
