Xbox One Gets 2 Backwards Compatible Games

Two Splinter Cell games are now playable on Xbox One.

Microsoft has rolled out another pair of backwards compatible games for Xbox One. This week, two Xbox 360 installments in Ubisoft's Splinter Cell series have been added to the growing backwards compatibility library--Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

Blacklist is the most recent installment in the Splinter Cell series, originally launching in 2013. It takes place after the events of Splinter Cell: Conviction and introduces a number of new skills and tools to Sam Fisher's arsenal, like the Tri-Rotor drone. GameSpot awarded the title an 8/10 in our original Splinter Cell: Blacklist review and said it has "too many sweet adventures in store for you to miss them."

Now Playing: Xbox One Adds 2 Backwards Compatible Games - GS News Update

Double Agent, on the other hand, was originally released in 2006. This installment marked the series' Xbox 360 debut and sees protagonist Sam Fisher infiltrate a terrorist group. It earned an 8.5/10 in GameSpot's original Splinter Cell: Double Agent review, in which we said, "Double Agent's few keen twists on Splinter Cell's single-player gameplay don't result in a remarkably different experience from the previous games, though that doesn't mean it still isn't some of the best stealth action out there."

If you still have a copy of either title laying around, you can simply pop the disc into your Xbox One to begin playing. Meanwhile, those who've previously purchased either game digitally will find them automatically waiting in the Ready to Download area of Xbox One's My Games and Apps menu. If you don't already own the titles but are interested in checking them out, they are also available to download from the Microsoft Store.

July has been a fairly busy month for backwards compatible releases. Last week, Microsoft added two Silent Hills games--Homecoming and HD Collection--to the backwards compatible library, while Assassin's Creed Liberation HD and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter arrived earlier this month.

There are now more than 400 Xbox 360 games--as well as more than 30 original Xbox titles--in Xbox One's backwards compatible library. You can see all of the past-generation titles that are playable on the console in our full list of backwards compatible games. You can also check out our gallery of the best Xbox One backwards compatible games for recommendations on which classic titles to play.

I'm actually like and respect how M$ has implemented the BC on the XB1 especially since it encourages game history and preservation compared to Sony's attempt at cloud gaming w/ older titles.

Seeing a few comments asking for the original Xbox Splinter Cell titles to be released BC. I am curious if the security flaw that the original Splinter Cell exposed in the classic Xbox will present similiar challenges when bringing it to XBone.

@djwood84: Thats a really great point. Though I don't consider the XBONE to be as close natured as say the original Xbox or PSP so I guess its a case of whether modders/hackers feel they want it to be exploited somehow. I don't condone piracy either way but case and point Sony removing features like OtherOS on PS3 really wasn't a cool thing to do

@Ant_17: Agree with your latter statement, any games in particular you would like to see come from the OG Xbox games library?

@Ant_17: Yeah I never got round to playing Wrekless. One of my favourtie magazine publishers at the time gave it a really bad score so never bought it. Heard it had a cult following though, Good call on Dino Crisis 3 as I'm willing to give that another shot. If anything the visuals were really nice at the time.

Otogi 1 and 2 are the ones for me though. Excellent games and I wish someday From Software would revisit that series instead of Dark Souls games all the time

To bad it wasn't the superior original Xbox version of Double Agent.

@Gary_Stanton: I wouldn't call that version superior but it was great that Ubisoft were able to give both current AND next gen users (at the time) the ability to experience the same game essentially with different variations, levels and story turns etc.

The OG version was almost at the peak of what the console could achieve with a few enhancements to the Unreal 2.5 engine whilst the 360 version had better multiplayer IMO. Both great versions in my eyes with their own respective uppers and downers

@Gary_Stanton: I was looking forward to Double Agent, as the latest "classic" Splinter Cell, but unfortunately that´s the OG Xbox version... hopefully they will bring that one too :D

@Gary_Stanton: Seriously? How?

EDIT: Just read about it. A completely different game, better in anyway other than graphics... Early gen games are weird

@Pyrosa: Oh for sure. Now heres hoping MS can work with Ubi to bring some more OG Xbox games to the platform. I'm thinking FC Instincts Predators, the OG Splinter Cell games (of course) Cold Fear and Brothers in Arms to name a few. ;)

@restatbonfire: Yeah its a shame as I barely played Spies vs Mercs on PT as I didn't get XB Live until much later compared to my mates. Unless there is some way to play on a private server (PC version) I don't think you can play online anymore :(

@firedrakez: Likely only a matter of time on those 3 games. I finished the first but not Pandora Tomorrow or Chaos Theory.

@dlCHIEF58: I am particularly interested in Pandora Tomorrow, since it is not available on PC. I would like to have it back compatible and enhanced on my Xbox One X in a full screen version unlike the small screen and lower resolution I have to endure on my 360.

@dlCHIEF58: The first game, imo, was the best. It was pure stealth with no gadgets and gave the impression of really being an infiltration spy with nothing but your skills. The following games were also great, just added more options for play styles. Then when they started making it so you could go in "guns-blazing," it kinda ruined the whole stealth game. The levels weren't specifically tailored around a stealth-only approach.

@Vodoo: Chaos Theory already started making the levels too easy. As you mentioned the range of options did make the gameplay more flexible as a result but I felt in response to the 'trial and error' nature of the original they overcompensated by giving you a little TOO much freedom in terms of the gadgets and weaponary at your disposal

The first Splinter Cell game DEFINITELY made you feel the most vunerable

@Franzkill: The multiplayer DOES still work on Xbox Live, you can only play custom games but I was playing last night and found games no problem, still remembered the maps but couldn't remember any of the controls as a spy :P
