Xbox One Games With Gold kicks off in June, resembles PlayStation Plus

Xbox Live Gold members will begin getting "subscription-based access" to free Xbox One games next month.

Alongside today's announcement that Microsoft will launch an Xbox One system that doesn't include Kinect, the company finally revealed that the Games With Gold promotion is coming to Xbox One--but with some changes to the way Gold members get their free games.

Beginning in June, Games With Gold will begin bringing "subscription-based access to free games" to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Next month, Gold members will be able to download and play Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for free.

What stands out about this is the "subscription-based access" qualification: It sounds as if you'll only be able to play these games while your Xbox Live subscription is active, as is the case with PlayStation Plus' Instant Game Collection offerings. We don't yet have all the details, like whether you'll be able to play the free games indefinitely as long as you have a Live subscription or how long the games will be offered for.

Whatever the case, this already stands in contrast to the Xbox 360's version of Games With Gold. Since it launched last year, it's offered up two free games for Xbox Live Gold members every month. These games could be downloaded and kept forever--even if your subscription lapsed, you'd still be able to play and re-download the free games you had downloaded previously. This gave it a leg up in one way on PlayStation Plus, which only allows its freebie games to be played while subscribed to Plus. But it also had the effect of the offered games almost always being older ones, resulting in a great deal of criticism.

Microsoft initially announced plans to bring Games With Gold to the Xbox One last year, but offered no timeline for making it happen. In February, Xbox boss Phil Spencer indicated we'd be getting word "fairly soon."

Also coming to the Xbox One in June are the regular sales, branded Deals With Gold, that have been seen on the Xbox 360 for some time now. The first Xbox One games to be discounted through this will be Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome, as well as "a few other surprises."

Xbox Live Gold members will also soon have access to a "virtual VIP room" on the Xbox One that offers a look at the "free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits" they're entitled to.

Games with Gold doesn't quite describe the immense scope of what Microsoft is offering here. It's like a shower of games every months.

It should be renamed: The Golden Shower.

<< LINK REMOVED >> How many times has your gold subscription lapsed since getting a free GwG game? And did you play any of those games during that time?

<< LINK REMOVED >> No fixing needed here, I would have thought the way you thought way back but you get only two games that is from mediocre to okay unlike how PSN+ does it you get some of the best games to play for free and not just two. I think it is a smart move for MS to do this.

After the recent MS announcements, I bet the Sony Board of Directors are worried about taking another pay cut.

Fannies are the worst! “Evil isn’t the real threat to the world. Stupid is just as destructive as Evil, maybe more so, and it’s a hell of a lot more common. What we really need is a crusade against Stupid. That might actually make a difference.”

Poor MS. They keep listening to our feedback and making the changes we ask for, but somehow seem to get even more grief for doing so.

I for one am happy with this news, if doing the ps plus subscription thing means offering better games then I don't care if I get to keep it or not. I didn't download a single game on 360's games with gold, but my PS3 is full of games I rented with my plus subscription.

What a horrible idea! Well I guess I also wont be dowloading any of the "free" titles that come as a "bonus" with an Xbox LIVE subscription as I never dowload the Playstation PLUS games. Lets just call it what it is and say they are LEASED games borrowed to the USER contingent on paying for a subscription service.

<< LINK REMOVED >> PS Plus was always a service which, for a price, would let you play some games without having to buy them. Nobody ever said you could sub for a year and then own the 70-odd games they throw at you in that time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You can think of them as free if you are already paying for the service to have access to multiplayer etc. Just icing on the top in that case.

Why would you never download any of the PS+ games? Did you already have them all? Or are you just doing that in some odd protest for getting free games while already having paid for PS+ to do multiplayer?

Who cares what u do? You aren't special and doesn't change anything for your experience if you never download games anyways.

Somehow it got worse. Now we basically rent two games that no one cared about much for starters.

And to think that this month's GwG on the 360 has great games like Dust and Saint's Row 3 given free of charge or subscription.

<< LINK REMOVED >> A good chunk of the Xbox One userbase has bought Titanfall when it came out, and the game is also being bundled in mass with many units.

It would be redundant, just like Halo 3 last year. Everyone has that already.

If it's gonna be like PSN+, those games will be locked to your account forever, and they'll be playable again whenever you renew your subscription.

Besides... if there is no backwards compatibility and your original console breaks... you'll end up not being able to play your digital purchases, anyways.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Say your subscription expires on a given month, and you don't intend to renew anytime soon for whatever reason. You still get to keep the games you got thus far plus whatever came out until your sub expired. Win win for everyone.

Until now, that is.

Rent... own... whatever. I buy the games I want, these games are usually games I never would have played in the first place. I consider it a nice bonus.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I was honestly expecting something in the veins of Killer Instinct, Peggle, or something more substantial from the XBLA library.

To Sony's credit at least they gave Resogun free from the get go, and intend to do the same with Driveclub, albeit on a much more limited margin.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think so too but that would literally absorb all of the money that a Sub would make (as they would have to pay the developers more money for the giveaway).

Its the reason why Sony's offerings have reduced too, it's just not cost effective to give (or lease) away massive amounts of games.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Actually, that isn't necessarily true if you look at how customers might behave differently if they got to keep the games forever when the sub lapses. The ONLY incentive that customers are given by that mechanic with locking the games behind a sub is that they might want to resub to restore access to the games they've already been given. There's a good chance those customers already played through that game or have relegated it to the "not ever gonna play" stack. Resub'ing just to play a previously acquired PS+ game(s) is most likely an extremely small percentage of customers.

All of the other incentives still exist regardless, such as restoring access to multiplayer or having a sub active to get the new "free" games that rotate in. It doesn't make a lot of sense to believe that users would resub for a month at a time only to get the free games offered during that period while letting it lapse between desired releases. There are cheapskates and then there are SUPER CHEAPSKATES. The cheapskates use PS+ to get games, while buying almost none outside of the offers, while the super cheapskates would sub/resub as needed. Because a one month sub is more expensive per month, versus a full year sub all at once, the super cheapskates often buy one year at a time and maintain the subscription permanently.

@drybones41 I think it is a price issue. Publishers don't like giving things away for free and they can present this as more like renting than owning.
