[UPDATE] Microsoft has now officially confirmed HBO Go's release on Xbox One. It's available now across the US.

"Xbox is one of our subscribers' favorite ways to access HBO GO and its incredible breadth of award-winning programming," HBO executive Jeff Dallesandro said. "Now, Xbox One users can get in on the action and Kinect with the very best HBO series and films on this innovative, state-of-the-art device."

The original story is below.

The Xbox One has added another media app to its lineup. The long-awaited HBO Go app is now available on Microsoft's latest console, at least for some users. I was able to find the app on my console here in the United States, though it may not be available for everyone just yet.

At the moment, you need to have a subscription to a cable or satellite TV service in order to use HBO Go, but in October, HBO CEO Richard Plepler made the surprising announcement that HBO will launch as a stand-alone service in the United States next year.

Hollywood news site Variety was first today to report that the HBO Go Xbox One app was finally available. The site also notes that it supports voice and gesture commands via Kinect.

HBO Go apps are already available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This marks the first time, however, that the service is available on a current-generation console. The HBO Go app is also coming to PlayStation 4, but it's not clear when that will be.

This is one of MS's other screw ups (next to the Kinect and changing the whole interface for a glorified cable box and "entertainment hub").

Everything that was on the 360 should have been on the X1 since launch. The whole purpose of "newer and better" is to have everything from before and MORE! Fail on MS's part.

<< LINK REMOVED >> so it's somehow ok that Sony's PS4 is missing almost ALL the features the PS3 had. PS4 doesn't have HBO Go, but PS3 does. PS4 doesn't have media streaming from PC but PS3 does.

PS4 is missing SO much that the PS3 had but that doesn't seem to bother you. For some reason its only MS fault. Heck the PS4 didn't have 3D Blu-ray support at launch, and Sony CREATED Blu-ray technology. Both MS and Sony released 3D Blu-ray support around the same time months after launch.

Both Sony and Microsoft would obviously like to have all the same features they had on previous generation, but its just not that simple. You obviously have no idea how MAJOR licenses and contracts work with major corporations.

Not what the app does. The app lets you access the entire hbo on demand library if you are already an hbo subscriber across multiple devices. Some tv providers don't keep the entire library on their on demand listing at all times but the app gives you access to all episodes of all shows, even the stuff that's not on tv anymore like Rome, the sopranos, band of brothers etc.

For example, the app has all the seasons of game of thrones available, but my cable box on demand only has the previous season.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That works as long as you don't watch Game of Thrones, Newsroom, Hello Ladies, Getting On, Boardwalk Empire, Last Week Tonight, True Detective or Vice. So basically, nothing current and those are all great shows.

I never understood the point to having an app on a stationary device that lets you watch movies from the movie channel you already subscribe to and probably already have access to the same movies on your cable box which is probably hooked up to your TV along with your console. App just for the sake of having them?

<< LINK REMOVED >> You have to got be kidding me. You think that opening HBO On Demand is the same as HBO GO? HBO GO has every show of (almost) every HBO series ever made. HBO on Demand has a tiny fraction of that. Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.

Because you can use the app on devices that aren't connected to the cable service. Say you have a tv in a room that's not connected to the cable you can use the app to watch hbo programs on that tv. Also, some providers dont give you full access to the entire hbo library on demand at all times some of the content is seasonal but on the app it's not. You can also watch old shows and movies that aren't currently being shown on hbo. The app has every episode of every show, movie or special that's ever been on hbo. The hbo on demand on the cable box often only has the latest shows not old stuff that's gone off the air like the sopranos etc.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You don't have to remember to set your DVR or watch during the broadcast if you have the streaming. The voice control is very nice too. I love the "Xbox select next episode" on Amazon instance to just jump to the next in a series.

@SavageEvil You might have the Xbox One in a different room, and now you can access HBO Go through there. And also, I'm not sure because I'm not American, but I thought HBO was going to accept HBO Go subscriptions without cable.

Any word on when you'll be able to subscribe to HBO without a cable contract?

Pretty much have to, leeching Netflix and Hulu from my sisters.
