Xbox One Could Remove "Snap" Mode, Refresh the Guide - Report

Significant changes for the Xbox One revealed by sources in new report.

With the Xbox One's holiday update already out, you might be wondering what's coming next in terms of new features and changes. While the company has yet to announce its plans, sources recently told Windows Central that future updates could introduce a Guide refresh and remove Snap mode.

Microsoft has reportedly tested a new Guide menu tab that will offer "instant access" to recently used games, apps, and other system features. What's more, the new menu is rumored to display your pins, which can then be customized in the tab, allowing you to access them more quickly. Perhaps more intriguing is that Microsoft is also reportedly considering the option for a single button press to access the Guide menu (which is how it worked on Xbox 360). As it stands today, you need to tap it twice.

According to the report, the overarching goal of these new features would be to make it faster and easier to find what you're looking for. November 2015's New Xbox One Experience update made some welcome changes in this department already.

As for the Snap changes, Microsoft is reportedly considering removing the multitasking feature altogether and replacing it with something new.

"Xbox looks to be exploring the possibility of a picture-in-picture multitasking implementation, where [a] 'snapped' app would simply hover in the corner of your game, rather than wiping out a quarter of your screen with a largely empty bar," Windows Central reported.

We have contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details; we'll update this post with anything we hear back.

The Xbox One's holiday update, which was released earlier this month, introduces features like Clubs, Looking for Group, and group messaging, as well as a new achievement rarity notification system. Read GameSpot's previous coverage to learn more about it.

Sounds great. The picture in picture mode is a great feature it let's me play a game and watch live TV and this new way of showing the two screens is what I thought they should have done all along

@the-games-masta: they are replacing it with something better and faster it's not being removed it's being improved. Nice that you were OK with less features but I guess the picture in picture feature all the time. Being able to watch a YouTube video or watching a live sporting event and being able to play a round of gears at the same time is a great feature

I strong agree with the possibility of switching the snap to a single button press.

The problem with it being multiple is that a double press can fail if the game is using up so much resource, because the double tap would not be perceived as a double tap by the OS. A single tap is best because the OS only has to listen for 1 tab, instead of having to have both taps as well as timing them efficiently.

Keep dem improvements coming!

I like the sound of the pip idea it would also be nice if we could move it where ever we wanted on screen. Xbox has done a great job at adding new features so I eagerly await what comes next.

Would be good updates. I hate the snap feature. Just a pain when your kinect picks up something you said and snaps something to your screen lol.

Looks legit to me. The snap function is cumbersome and silly right now.

Sound's great. It's been awesome watching the Xbox consoles evolve. They did it with the 360 but have taken it even further on XB1 with monthly updates. Keep them coming MS. 

Sony really need to up their game in this department coz it's just embarrassing when you compare the ps4 to the XB1.

?XB > ps?

Snap would have been used more had background music been implicated earlier. Even then, you need to go full screen to pick a station.

So MS won't just remove the multitasking feature "snap". MS will just improve it, actually.

@7tizz: You only have that feature if you subscribe to it through your provider. Mind you, MS has scrapped a lot of TV features in the last year due to disinterest in the market due to streaming's popularity, and by usage metrics. Basically, more people stream than watch live TV now, and they figured "why bother" if it's something that people aren't going to use. The R&D/development budget is better spent elsewhere.

@_Silent_Jay_: Makes me think of Wii U, at first they had a useful guide and other options, now the button is useless. Kind of a shame but yeah streaming is where it's at, making me wonder why they made the One S more expensive with UHD BD.

When it launched I thought who the hell came up with snap and who wants snap when the vast majority of tvs already have pic in pic since years. Now they get it... also make it quicker, snap is so sluggish.

I would be SO stoked for pic in pic, especially moving it around on screen. If the snapped apps worked a bit faster that would be ideal. On windows, you can have so much going on at once and it's so fast, and I don't have a super machine by any means. I'd like to be able to have youtube and netflix as a picture in picture as well. The double tapping thing I would be SO HAPPY to see gone. I hate double tapping. Tapping twice is annoying, and sometimes doesn't register correctly so you end up being taken to the home screen and crap. Very annoying. I'm excited for these updates.

YESSSSSS! BEEN WANTING Picture in Picture for the longest time!! Snap is great, but it eats up more than a quarter of the screen when you consider game screen is also minimized with black bars on top and bottom!!

Sounds interesting. Hopefully we'll still be able to open the Guide or go to Home without launching a notification if it pops up. And I'm worried for how Twitch streaming (or other apps) will work without snap, hard to imagine how it can be improved with a picture-in-picture overlay blocking your game view.

I use the snap feature when streaming through Twitch. Easier to see comments that way instead of having to turn my wheelchair around to look at my laptop which sits on a table behind me.

How's about an option to turn off the light on the controller. It's like a damn flashlight in my face when I game in a dark room, which is the only way I game.

As long as the PiP can be dynamically moved in real-time (perhaps w/the D-pad whilst defocused in highlight mode or something), and they keep the existing "split and scale" mode as a fallback (non-default), then I'd welcome the change.

...but during football season... They'll only remove Snap over my cold dead controller.

The only thing I use Snap/Side Menu for now is Pandora while playing games.

Its good to see that they might be going back to the Guide, one push button.

Pandora will surely be less annoying if the old guide menu/music player popped back up in the center like on the 360.

I don't really use it much, but Snap is also a functionality on Windows and it can be pretty handy for productivity. For example, scanning two files at the same time with your eyes, or having one file in place as a reference for a new one you are working on
