Xbox One "Catching Up Quickly" To PS4, EA Exec Says

Price drop and bundles helping Microsoft close the gap, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen says.

No Caption Provided

The Xbox One is "catching up quickly" to the PlayStation 4 in terms of worldwide sales, according to Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen. What's helping Microsoft close the gap is the recent $50 price drop and the value-focused Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty bundles currently available, he said today.

"Clearly, Sony has jumped out to a lead with a great console and I think a great pricing strategy. But Microsoft is catching up quickly," Jorgensen said today during a presentation at the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference. "And pricing actions that are taking place, particularly within this Christmas season, driven by Microsoft around reductions plus a lot of bundled software, I think will continue to help pull the consumer into the new consoles."

"Microsoft is catching up quickly" -- Blake Jorgensen

Jorgensen predicted that, after the holiday shopping season ends, there will be "north of 25 million" combined Xbox One and PS4 systems in the market. It is unclear how many are in the market currently, but it's believed to be above 15 million (10 million PS4s and at least 5 million Xbox Ones).

In terms of the number of consoles shipped, Sony has moved 13.5 million PS4s, while Microsoft has sold 10 million Xbox Ones to retailers.

EA doesn't make money on console sales, but more current-generation systems in the market does have its benefits for the publisher.

"I think [more Xbox One and PS4 sales] starts to minimize the headwind we've seen over the last couple of years of people slowing their purchasing on old consoles in anticipation of buying titles for the new consoles," Jorgensen said.

Commenting on the overall success of the Xbox One and PS4, which celebrate their first anniversary this month, Jorgensen said both platforms have performed "well ahead of our expectations and I think most people in the industry's expectations."

The Xbox One and PS4 have sold well in key markets such as North America and Western Europe, Jorgensen said. He added that, when you compare Xbox One and PS4 sales to Xbox 360 and PS3 sales over the same period of time, the new consoles are selling 50-70 percent better.

How is it the "ALMOST" 10 millions XBoxOnes sold to retailers all of a sudden becomes 10 million XBoxOnes sold? I knew when I saw that last week or so that some would cement that number as actual fact. Fact is... NO ONE but Sony and MS know what they have truly sold to retailers and ultimately to consumers. This Jorgensen guy is spinning like a top! And some are just eating the PR bull like its a gourmet buffet.

I guess it is only human to seek validation for your choices but good gosh yall.. What is it good for???

Price cut yes! But great exclusives is something both are lacking . Sunset overdrive is cool. But not a console mover. Master chief collection will help a little. but we will see what happens when the gta v bundles hit the shelves for ps4 . I bought the $349 Xbox one mainly because of the price. Same reason I bought a ps4 at launch . Had nothing to do with great exclusives. Both are lacking very much in that department. no must haves from either . Except for remakes of games we've already played. I expect a great battle between Sony and Microsoft in the future . And me being the winner. Because we all know when they have to compete hard . We the consumer win in the end . Because we get better products. Why you would want to wave a fanboy flag for one and wish death upon the other . That's shooting yourself in the foot as a gamer . If one dominates the other. They don't feel the pressure to make good games . I wish nothing but success for both . Because I know better games will be on the way . Then we can spend more time actually playing them . Instead of coming to comment forums to argue about them.

I would certainly hope that it is "closing the gap" as Microsoft if probably selling the console at a loss in hopes to make up the money with attachments/software. Let us keep in mind the Ps4 is still selling as well, lol.

Also, why do we care what some EA Exec says? Because EA is such a reliable source of information?

I don't put much faith into year one numbers. Early adopters and "hardcore" gamers will flock to one over the other and that has been the PS4 in the first year. I think many forget that in the next few years, more casual types and family types will pick between them, many of those already owning a WiiU or upgrading from a PS3/360/Wii. This is the great unknown right now, but price is often a major deciding factor in their decisions. If Microsoft can undercut Sony worldwide by $50 (or whatever exchange that equals), then they stand a chance of catching up.

Either way, this gen is off to a great start for 2 of the 3 consoles. The PS4 is outselling the PS3 first year and the One is outselling the 360's first year... both by a large margin. The Wii was such a massive success in its first year that Nintendo would be hard pressed to ever outsell the Wii year one on any future console and the WiiU did not even come close. I hold out hope for the WiiU this year. It seems like it has some momentum.

It seems like everyone wants their console to be the sales king of this gen (and last). The best thing for all of us would be for all 3 to end up as close as the 360 and ps3 did last gen. Heavy competition is the best thing for us all.

Good for MS, but why does it sound like EA is backing them? They shouldn't care as long as consoles are selling because they're on both platforms.

It is estimated. We only know how many shipped. 13.5 mill PS4's vs 10 mill XBOX One's. The XBOX One sold number is probably closer to 7-8 mill, but it is all just speculation.

EA, the most evil company in the video game industry, has partnered with MS multiple times. They tried to get us to go all digital and failed. Sorry EA but it doesn't make sense since PS has outsold MS EVERY MONTH since release. Nice try. Why don't you go back to figuring out how to rip out more content from your games?

EA is certain that the Xbox One is quickly closing the sales gap even though it's been behind the PS4 in sales for 10 straight months in the US and the situation is much worse in Europe. Sure EA. You undoubtedly have access to internal sales data on both sides for no apparent reason. Please, continue to tell us how quickly the gap is closing. Or... maybe you're just bitter that EA Access isn't on the PS4? Yeah, that's more likely.

The overly long 7th gen created one of the worse lethargic periods of game development I can remember since Atari. There were huge talent drains as well, as everyone chased social, mobile, kickstarter, and their very own Minecraft - it left studios and 1 rst party developers in shambles. Usually in the 3rd and 4th year consoles cycles some of the best games come out that greatly take advantage of their systems- instead many years were wasted chasing gimmicks like motion controls, zynga clones, and their very own kickstarter startup. The 'console' limped along the last few years of the 7th gen putting out sequel and clone after another, with PC really showing the only advancement in AAA in the industry.

The game industry put alot of blame on the world wide economic recession - that the consumer would not want to buy new tech. Truth being the game industry wanted to take the reality tv route- cheap products with high profit. Get the highest profit regardless of quality or the future. The 'gamer' has been stewing for 3-4 extra years waiting for not only a new console, but new IPs, new leaps in current franchises, and new experiences - while I do not think 8th gen console will have the legs technology wise to last a full 5 years - at least this has been a loud and defining message to the gaming industry the consumer wants back their 5 year cycle.

Let me get this straight, the xbox one has been leading for a week, and the only source on that information is from MS themselves, and somehow they will bride a gap in sales of 5 million plus? Even if Sony didn't sell another console for the rest of the year, MS still wouldn't catch up.

For the record I own both systems.

It isn't 5 million plus difference. If you read carefully, they said it is 10 million PS4's to 5 million+ XBOX One's, but both numbers are estimated based on various metrics. The only concrete numbers we have is that there are 13.5 million PS4's sold into retail and 10 million XBOX One's sold into retail. With both pushing to avoid selling out before the holiday season ends, a 7-8 million XBOX and 10-11 million PS4 sales number would be reasonable (2-3mill available in retail). Of course both are outselling their predecessors' first year numbers by staggering quantities, so year one of this gen has been an enormous success for both Sony and Microsoft.

<< LINK REMOVED >> lmao....let's look at the article again....slowly. XB is "catching up"; no one said they had "brided" the gap, but doing so in, say, a six month span wouldn't be unreasonable; MS has far, far deeper pockets than Sony and could continue to discount indefinitely; Sony cannot match them. Whether MS will or not remains to be seen. The sole reason PS has the sales lead was the decision MS made over the Kinnect, which made the PS $100 cheaper....that's it...period. For the record, I actually do own both systems and have played a combined 1 game on them in 1 year...yes, I'm stupid, but I am not an obvious liar.

Compare the consoles....download time, PS; exclusives, XB (not that I play any of those games, but they're still more and better than anything PS has, until Uncharted comes out); controller, XB, XB, XB; GUI; XB; holistic system; with the Kinnect, XB is the far superior home entertainment system (Sony should have followed suit from a business perspective, but I understand why they didn't).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> they''re not even slowly catching up to the ps4 at all. for them to slowly catch up to the ps4 they have to beat ps4 each month globally not beat sony for 2 weeks just in the US. As long as sony still beat sales globally (if u don't know what that means it means all sales around the world combined) then xbox can not slowly catch up. the xbox will have to outsell ps4 in global sales to catch up which that probably won't happen. And no matter how much deeper microsoft pockets are they're not dumb enough to keep dropping the price to catch up.

Of course EA is cheerleading for microsoft, they went all in on the xbox one. Not sure why they didn't wait a year or two to see who came out on top like they always have.... but when you put all your eggs in one basket, better hope that basket isn't going to be totally outsold by the ps4...... but then again Peter Moore isn't very smart.
