Xbox One "Catching Up Quickly" To PS4, EA Exec Says

Price drop and bundles helping Microsoft close the gap, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen says.

The Xbox One is "catching up quickly" to the PlayStation 4 in terms of worldwide sales, according to Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen. What's helping Microsoft close the gap is the recent $50 price drop and the value-focused Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty bundles currently available, he said today.

"Clearly, Sony has jumped out to a lead with a great console and I think a great pricing strategy. But Microsoft is catching up quickly," Jorgensen said today during a presentation at the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference. "And pricing actions that are taking place, particularly within this Christmas season, driven by Microsoft around reductions plus a lot of bundled software, I think will continue to help pull the consumer into the new consoles."

"Microsoft is catching up quickly" -- Blake Jorgensen

Jorgensen predicted that, after the holiday shopping season ends, there will be "north of 25 million" combined Xbox One and PS4 systems in the market. It is unclear how many are in the market currently, but it's believed to be above 15 million (10 million PS4s and at least 5 million Xbox Ones).

In terms of the number of consoles shipped, Sony has moved 13.5 million PS4s, while Microsoft has sold 10 million Xbox Ones to retailers.

EA doesn't make money on console sales, but more current-generation systems in the market does have its benefits for the publisher.

"I think [more Xbox One and PS4 sales] starts to minimize the headwind we've seen over the last couple of years of people slowing their purchasing on old consoles in anticipation of buying titles for the new consoles," Jorgensen said.

Commenting on the overall success of the Xbox One and PS4, which celebrate their first anniversary this month, Jorgensen said both platforms have performed "well ahead of our expectations and I think most people in the industry's expectations."

The Xbox One and PS4 have sold well in key markets such as North America and Western Europe, Jorgensen said. He added that, when you compare Xbox One and PS4 sales to Xbox 360 and PS3 sales over the same period of time, the new consoles are selling 50-70 percent better.

The gap is probably closing in part cause MS is luring away customers from sony, that and a lot of people are starting to realize just how awesome the Wii U :)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Even though we know the PS4 has an extreme advantage...to answer your question (since you're so dense). If the PS4 sold only 1 more unit than the Xbox One all 11 months, then technically, the PS4 would lead by 11 consoles. That gap could be closed in a single day this month. However, you can still say the Xbox One was outsold every month. Gaps close in time...just like how the PS3 surpassed the 360.

Second, there hasn't been a single month this year that the Xbox has outsold the PS4...unless it does, the gap doesn't close...IT GETS WIDER!

so if Microsoft outsells Sony for 2 weeks, but at the end of the month fails to outsell them for that month.

they haven't closed the gap at all, not even a little bit. you think in the last 2 weeks, since again, we know for a fact Sony outsold them last month. they have significantly closed the gap?

i'm sorry, but i can't decide if that is ignorant, delusional, or just tr0lling

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> - what assumptions am i making? we know for a reported fact that Sony has outsold Microsoft the last 10 months straight. that is a fact.

we know for a fact that Sony outsold Microsot 3:1 in the 3rd quarter of this year (reported that Microsoft shipped 1.3 million consoles (360s and new ones) to Sony's 3.3 million shipped that quarter.

these are facts. not guesses, not what i think or want to be true. these are facts.

it is literally impossible for Microsoft to be closing the gap in a 14 day period after being decimated by almost a 3:1 margin just the last 3 months.

no assumption, just the facts

Units shipped Sony: 13.5 million

Units Shipped MS: 10 million

Units sold Nintendo: 7.2 million

That's it. That is all you know. Everything else you're saying is speculation

closing the gap is MS saying that they are selling more than Sony. Any number swinging the other way is technically closing a gap.

Who cares about sold through? Manufacturer gets paid by the retailer. You think our money funnels back to Microsoft? No. The retailer pays Microsoft for the stock they get, therefore, they do not order product unless it is selling. Sales to retailers is the more important number because it more closely represents the trend.

Sales through numbers can be inaccurate because you can sell a system in June, it could be returned 30 days later. You sell it again. That is 2 sales on 1 item for 2 different months. That's why Microsoft is reporting sales to retailers. That's the purer number.

<< LINK REMOVED >> - you cannot close a gap, when the gap at the beggining of the month is the same as at the end of the month.

that's impossible, even if Sony narrowly outsells them at the end of the month, it's still the same deficit as it was in the beginning of the month. and a little bit more

by definition that is NOT closing the gap

but until the numbers for the month are in, you can't say with any intellectual integrity that the gap has been closed at all. day to day, week to week sales are irrelevant. what happens at the end of each month is what they track.

same with sales. doesn't matter what they do on a day to day basis (especially in a month with black friday in it). what matters is how it finishes

but while Sony is currently on pace to outsell the PS2 (highest selling console), Microsoft is only on pace to be the fastest selling Microsoft system. and keep in mind that Microsoft has been in 3rd in sales for the last 2 generations. so that is noteworthy for the company, but overall.....not so much

<< LINK REMOVED >> The problem is your pointing to a distant future, and you have no idea what is gonna actually happen. This price lowering could be the start of something, or it could mean very little if anything. In good time we will see how this all turns out but 1 year into this is useless even talking about. I honestly dont give a shiet either way, but I think Microsoft does have an edge right now and they are just trying to hype the fck out of that edge to get people talking. Like it or not trending and mouth to mouth sells systems. The town I live in mostly all XBOX for whatever reason, when I buy a PS4 game they almost instinctively grab an XONE copy on accident. Its odd but a few people hype a system whether its PS or XONE and it catches on. You cant obviously think they go to gaming sites and read reviews... Many buy one or the other because their buddy has one or maybe its a bit cheaper. I also dont always feel the highest selling anything is always the best but to each their own.

we don't know what it will be at the end of the month.

all we know for sure, is that there is a massive gap, and we also know that Microsoft hasn't sold millions upon millions of consoles in the last 14 days.

so we also know that the gap, is still pretty much the same. and at the end of the month we'll know for sure.

we dont' know for a fact what Microsoft has done, but we know it's not 10 million, otherwise, it would say so. and again, considering the facts (not speculation) that Sony shipped 3x more PS4s than Microsoft did either system (360 or new one).

it's pretty safe to say that they are not at the 10 million mark by a long shot.

The journalist in question needs to improve his reading comprehension and cut out the clickbait headline. The EA CFO is talking about Microsoft catching up with their pricing strategy, not sales.

Sad that this needs to be clarified on a professional site. As it is, this is plain misinformation.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The EA CFO directly talks about Microsoft catching up with Sony's pricing strategy due to the price cut and bundles. Nowhere does he talk about sales catching up, that is a quote from the journalist in question.

It would be ridiculous for the EA CFO to say such a thing, given the PS4's worldwide sales are extending over Xbox One on a daily basis. In the US the price cut has, at best, brought them level pegging with PS4 sales on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, worldwide, the gap is extending. Only today we heard PS4 had sold 1m in Germany, the Xbox One is at 170k in the country.

If they would be so proud they would release some actual numbers, but they didn't in attempts to inflate the numbers as much as possible.

Their awkward silence and spinning stats around could only mean that the actual attachment rate of their hardware is even lower than what is believed.

The PS4 has been constantly out of stock, which means their sold units are very very close to the total number of units shipped out.

<< LINK REMOVED >> First, it's easier for Sony and Microsoft to track sold in numbers (these are the number of consoles shipped). Second, retailers generally don't order more stock than they believe they can sell in the next month. Holding onto stock takes up precious space, so retailers generally don't want to order too much. In essence, sold in numbers are what the retailers hope will be the sold through numbers through next month. Retailers are banking on people buying a few million PS4's and X1's between now and Xmas.

Retailers also base purchasing on past trends. If a product hasn't been selling well month over month, they don't order anymore. Space is money, simple as that. Great thought.
