Xbox One "Catching Up Quickly" To PS4, EA Exec Says

Price drop and bundles helping Microsoft close the gap, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen says.

The Xbox One is "catching up quickly" to the PlayStation 4 in terms of worldwide sales, according to Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen. What's helping Microsoft close the gap is the recent $50 price drop and the value-focused Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty bundles currently available, he said today.

"Clearly, Sony has jumped out to a lead with a great console and I think a great pricing strategy. But Microsoft is catching up quickly," Jorgensen said today during a presentation at the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference. "And pricing actions that are taking place, particularly within this Christmas season, driven by Microsoft around reductions plus a lot of bundled software, I think will continue to help pull the consumer into the new consoles."

"Microsoft is catching up quickly" -- Blake Jorgensen

Jorgensen predicted that, after the holiday shopping season ends, there will be "north of 25 million" combined Xbox One and PS4 systems in the market. It is unclear how many are in the market currently, but it's believed to be above 15 million (10 million PS4s and at least 5 million Xbox Ones).

In terms of the number of consoles shipped, Sony has moved 13.5 million PS4s, while Microsoft has sold 10 million Xbox Ones to retailers.

EA doesn't make money on console sales, but more current-generation systems in the market does have its benefits for the publisher.

"I think [more Xbox One and PS4 sales] starts to minimize the headwind we've seen over the last couple of years of people slowing their purchasing on old consoles in anticipation of buying titles for the new consoles," Jorgensen said.

Commenting on the overall success of the Xbox One and PS4, which celebrate their first anniversary this month, Jorgensen said both platforms have performed "well ahead of our expectations and I think most people in the industry's expectations."

The Xbox One and PS4 have sold well in key markets such as North America and Western Europe, Jorgensen said. He added that, when you compare Xbox One and PS4 sales to Xbox 360 and PS3 sales over the same period of time, the new consoles are selling 50-70 percent better.

By "catching up", you mean week on week sales, and only in the US, right? Because worldwide, MS is getting it HANDED to them by Sony!

Here's the thing. To "catch up", MS needs to EXCEED the sales of the PS4, and do so by a significant margin, for a LONG time. They have HALF the number of consoles in customer's homes right now than their competition, and less than 40% of the overall market!

Also, the sudden spike in sales due to the price cut is apparently just that...a SPIKE. Expect the PS4 to take NPD for November as well. Those waiting for the price cut got their console...so MS can brag about sales for the first two weeks or so...but watch how they lose even in the US, even after the price cuts, for the month as a whole.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> - articles on here and other gaming sources about how it's got about 8 million consoles sold so far, and we know that Microsoft isn't there yet. 10 million shipped is all we know........could be anywhere between 6- 8 million sold for all we know. but we know for a fact the Wii U is about 8 million deep right now.

@Jdzspace Why dont you get me the #s that the Wii U did in its first year out on the market instead of acting like they launched at the same time. I could get you a link to this info that would tell you that the XONE is crushing the Wii U when you compare apples to apples but you sir would not want to talk about that because its devastating to your little tirade that you spew on every article that has something to do with sales. The reason that the XONE and PS4 are the two fastest selling consoles ever, would be because they both have outsold the Wii U in contrast to the time they have been on the market.

Im not putting down either system I own them both, but this is ridiculous..

<< LINK REMOVED >> You dont get it, his speculations are facts. Im not here to argue I read his comments all the time, and I actually agree with him that you cant get beat for 10 months in sales and then make it all up in 3-6 weeks. I just have to draw a line when he compares the XONE to the Wii U in sales because its just plain inaccurate. I have Bs'd with him about games and what not many times and usually hes good to talk to, but console wars is just something else entirely. I understand that we all have to argue about this shiz but it gets exhausting from time to time.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> the Xbox One will most likely surpass the WiiU by the end of the year. Sorry to share that, but the WiiU is still struggling overall. The last cited article was 7.2 million for WiiU.

what does Microsoft have to counter that? just has halo hd remakes. and sunset overdrive didn't help them last month. so ......I dont' know why you assume they will be overtaken by microsoft by years end.

NIntendo does have the best games coming out in the next 6 months, by FAR.

not just better than Microsoft, better than anyone

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Bayonetta 2 is a mature game. Most people buying Wii U's are parents for their kids. It's only sold a few hundred thousand copies worldwide. How many people bought a Wii U just for that one game? I've no idea but, probably not a huge amount. Not saying the system or the game aren't any good. I enjoy the Wii U very much but, that game is not my cup of tea. I'm still waiting for Zelda and Metroid. Soon I hope.

But remember the Xbox One and PS4 appeal over the Wii U is third party games, this is the real reason the Wii U is not selling well. Most people can't justify buying a whole system to play 5-6 exclusive games each year.

I own a Wii U and love it, but it's not a "complete" system.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> - i also own a Wii U and love it. but i understand what you are saying. the exclusives are the primary reason, nostalgia as well.

but when you look at the library you can play from the Wii......that makes it second to none. at least for me, but that's because i love RPGs. and the other systems are very lacking in that genre right now. looks to get better with Dragon's Age and Persona 5.

but when i got my Wii U , that wasn't the case

Yeah i mean i own a PC, X1 and PS4 as well and for me the Wii U has it's place but if i was only allowed one platform the Wii U would be at the bottom of the list because of multi platform games, generally my favourites are not exclusives.

But owning all systems the Wii U is rated much higher because i just use it for exclusives and get my multi platform games elsewhere. Bring on Smash !!!!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Bayonetta is a niche game. Super Smash Bros has a large audience for sure. However, you're focused on just the exclusives, and if you count the amount of third party support for Sony and MS, there's many more "exclusives" that won't be seen on the WiiU. Those two games will not beat out third party support. Also, the Xbox One is 50 dollars more packed in with 2 games. The third party support coupled with the bundle pricing is exactly why you won't see a surge in WiiU. Heck, WiiU isn't even in the top 100 now on Amazon. The PS4 and Xbox One are in the top 15. Though that is one retailer, there should be an indication that WiiU is performing on that list.

@EyeAmTJ yep, from the same people who claim everyone fanb0ys and deny their own fanb0yism. It's the same people every single day just p1ssing on every Xbox article and then share false equivalences because they saw a couple of Xbox fanb0ys on a Sony article. Meanwhile, the Sony America president Shawn Layden is basically pulling double standard nonsense out of his Mafia looking but.t. This guy so cares for them.

I'm all for all 3 doing well. That said it lost October again.

That means it had to sell millions in a couple weeks. I find that hard to imagine.

It would be out pacing it's launch substantially. The math just doesn't make sense.

That doesn't make sense.10 million is million. 13 million is 13 million. PS4 sells multiple SKU's, so are their numbers somewhat skewed also?
