Xbox One can run Windows 8.1's new universal apps

Microsoft's new universal apps will work on PC, tablet, phone, and Xbox One--but will you have to buy them for each platform?

No Caption Provided

Microsoft's new universal apps will be able to function across all Windows devices--including the Xbox One.

The company announced the new app framework during its Build 2014 conference in San Francisco, showing off the latest updates to Windows Phone and Windows 8.1.

Microsoft says it will provide tools for developers to tweak the UI and features to whatever platform the application is running on. This includes developers being able to incorporate Kinect support when porting to Xbox One, for instance

Despite the new universal applications being able to run on all platforms, Microsoft adds that developers will be able to charge users to access the apps on each platform--you could theoretically have to pay twice if you want it to run on Xbox One and PC, then. But it is also possible for developers to sell an application once and allow it to run on every Windows platform.

Microsoft adds that apps which use the cloud to sync information should also be able to carry that across platforms.

Elsewhere in Microsoft's Build 2014 conference, the company announced that Cortana really is its digital assistant for Windows Phone 8.1, and that the Start Menu is coming back to Windows.

Reading the responses below... it's pretty obvious Generation Glee is setting all sorts of records for stupid. It's amazing that you Glee'ers can be raised with all this technology around you and not have a clue about the simplest things.

Anywho this is very cool and means the XB1 could one day have an app store with a selection that you're used to seeing on phones and tablets. That is very promising.

It has nothing to do with the generation, I'm nineteen and I work in Software Engineering. There are idiots in every generation. Funny how you're so fixated on ridiculing the younger population, considering we're the ones that are going to be paying taxes for your fucking Medicare when your old ass starts to break down. And your anti-Obama posts are hillarious. Go ahead and criticize liberals and bitch about goverment spending while you draw your Social Security check. Fucking hypocrite.

You know, I'm quite tired of hearing people complain about the Xbox and rant about how much better the PS4 is. It's like the whole iPhone vs Android debate. In my opinion you're comparing apples and oranges at this point. Microsoft and Sony clearly have different goals in mind. The hardcore gamer that just wants to use their console for games may prefer the PS4 but don't ignore the fact that some of us like to use our consoles for more than just gaming.

There is a point for SOME apps on the Xbox One. Yes I'm not going to want to mess with Spreadsheets on my TV but I might want to share a screenshot/video of my melting someone's face on Facebook, Twitter, Vine, etc. I might want to get messages from Facebook, HangOut, or even (gasp) SMS on my Xbox while I am as mentioned... melting face. Apps allow for a whole lot of use cases beyond what we have seen now. If you that use case does not work for you just uninstall it. Let other people that would enjoy it enjoy it.

That said the whole point of the Universal App is to give developers more options. Back in the day it was really expensive to try to write something for everything (my hat goes off to Netflix and Facebook). For this reason developers have to pick and choose. Sadly this means Windows 8 and Windows Phone by themselves fall way down on the totem poll. This is why these platforms currently suck. Microsoft is suffering from a chicken or egg problem. The platform is was new so there were no apps. Because there were no apps the platform sucks. Developers won't write apps for a platform that sucks. So what do you do? Microsoft is doing whatever they can to get developers to write apps. More apps mean less suckage in this case for everything.

Microsoft is a for profit company. They don't just make shit for your own health. I for one want to see them succeed. If they don't take steps like this eventually they're going to go away.

Does this mean we'll be able to load and run PC games on our XB1 now? What about Steam & Origin apps. If they are Win 8.1 compatible on a PC, won't they be compatible on the XB1 as well?

<< LINK REMOVED >> No. This is for future programs/apps that would have to be created to run on all MS platforms, including non-x86 tablets and phones. That means no Steam or Origin or other desktop apps unless they're recreated from the ground up. Even then something like Steam and Origin is just a gateway to play x86 games, so none of the games would work anyways.

Since you think you're so intelligent, let me point out that the universal app framework isn't anywhere near new, it's the same API that's been used to write all the Metro-style applications for the four years Windows 8 has been out. All applications in the Windows Store are already using it. And it has nothing to do with architecture in particular, the Xbox One is x86. The only non-x86 devices using this API are ARM-based devices running Windows 8.1 RT or Windows Phone 8.1.

Only if MS comes up with some way to charge you extra for that. When ever you had MS giving you something for free, other then 5 year old used up game?

It needs to be noted that just because an app CAN run on the Xbox One doesn't mean that Microsoft will certify it to. I've seen wild speculation about things like emulators running on the XBone and that simply isn't going to happen.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Microsoft does not "certify" any of their apps. The only company that does that is Apple (Google doesn't do that either). There's already numerous emulators on the Windows Store and will most likely be available on the Xbox One as well.

Even if we put all business decisions aside, apps will probably be heavily scrutinized on security alone.

So it's basically Microsoft's version of Sony's SDK for their PS3/PS4/Vita/Mobile? Congratulations on finally incorporating something that should've been added years ago I guess...

No, dumbass. It's allowing the thousands of apps already in the Windows Store to run on the Xbox One. And the Xbox SDK has always been more available than PlayStation's... XNA was publicly available, whereas the PS3 SDK cost thousands of dollars and required you to jump through a lot of hoops if you were an independent developer.

Sweet so now i can track my MS Project files at home using Kinect..... Normally don't post negative stuff about systems i don't personally own but this one just needed a sarcastic comment.

I may lack imagination but i do not see how this is a positive or anything useful.

You can also Skype with Kinect, taking advantage of the 1080p video recording and automatic face tracking. Call me when the PS4 lets me do that AND plays games. Everyone says the PS4 is better for gamers because it only plays games, but the Xbox plays games just as well and does more...not seeing how a limited system is better.

It'll probably be similar to how the current apps work. You install them for free, but pay for the service behind them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You do know that developers do make free games right? You could get a game on your phone and play it on your phone, PC, tablet and Xbox. This is just like an app on your iPhone or Android device. Now you can just play it on your console. If they can make games that play on the X1 there is no need for me to get an Amazon Fire.

What if Google started to make Windows apps. We could check our Gmail on our TV or listen to Google Music. Google always said they'd be open to it, just needed more devices.

Buy a PS4 mate, I did. I been xbox since the beginning, but didn't bother with the xbone, after they charged an extra £100 pound for kinect I didn't want. Plus it's not really much different to a 360, just faster with slightly better graphics. Now they're adding new apps and windows 8.whatever as an apology for the main feature-Gaming, being broke. Ps4 gets the gaming right, anything else is a bonus, xbone is home entertainment centre where gaming is the bonus!

Yeah...Everyone seems to be forgetting that the PS3 launched at $800 ($400 more than the Xbox 360, mind) because they thought it'd be cool to use IBM's Cell supercomputing architecture. It sounded cool but the implementation was so dumbed down it performed slower than if they just went with a standard PowerPC architecture. It didn't actually become an affordable console for more than a year.
