Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Could One Day Work With Original Xbox Games

@bickle2: That is assuming they use the same approach they did on the 360 game emulation. It may not be necessary to go that route since the processors in those systems are so similar and they may be able to pull them from the disc. If they can get it to work without having to redistribute the game, they do not need to worry about licensing issues or publisher permission.

@bickle2: They could turn it back on. I'm not saying it's a probability but Phil's answers to questions (the one in the article, for instance) do surprise me, especially if you were to imagine an answer someone else might have delivered in the same scenario. I always wondered what was actually stopping them from scaling it back to support the reduced capacity required. I know their official answer was the friend list, which was a gigantic cop-out. I don't know how many servers it initially took to run the XBL infrastructure for the Xbox but MS could easily have shrunk and virtualized it, and kept it as a bullet point on the XBL feature list. Sure there'd be a few games/features unplayable at this point due to disabled third party servers, but anything that was PTP with XBL matchmaking would still work fine.

@bickle2: Actually, technically the old Xbox Live is still there, so there is no reason to not activate it.

@Mr_Mark_Legion: I love Splinter Cell too. Xbox is still the only proper way to play it. PC version can't display the correct shadows unless you're using specific GeForce 3/4 graphics cards, and doesn't support gamepads.

Time to accept that this is Phil Spencers Xbox, and Phil is a gamer like us. Don Mattricks Xbox and his backwards thinking is gone from Xbox and hopefully never to return.

@towelgirl21: So, you're saying that having more options is bad? Despite what everyone says, video games are not disposable. There is nothing wrong with playing old games as long as you enjoy them.

@SingletreeAve: It is a LOT more possible with the Xbox Prime than it was with the 360, which they pulled off rather well. It would be much easier to do emulation of the original since it and the One share a common CPU architecture and there is also a much greater difference in power.
