Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Could One Day Work With Original Xbox Games

"I ask the backwards compatibility team this question a lot."

Maybe don't throw away your original Xbox discs just yet. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said today that the Xbox One's existing backwards compatibility functionality could one day be extended to original Xbox titles.

Spencer made the tease in an exchange on Twitter. Here's how the conversation transpired:

Question: "Very silly question, but if Xbox One essentially has Xbox 360 emulator, how much work would go into making original Xbox titles backwards compatibility?"

Spencer: "I don't think it's silly. I ask the backwards compatibility team this question a lot. Need to finish 360 backwards compatibility for now."

No Caption Provided

Spencer's comments shouldn't be taken as confirmation that the Xbox One will add original Xbox backwards compatibility support soon, or ever. Clearly, nothing is set in stone at this time.

Backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games is currently available on Xbox One for Preview Program members only. It will roll out to everyone in November, at which time there will be more than one hundred available games. In addition, all future Xbox 360 Games With Gold titles (starting in November) will be backwards-compatible.

Microsoft has not yet announced the full lineup of supported titles, but you can check out this list to see all of the confirmed games so far. The list may grow later this week, as Microsoft says it will announce the next wave of backwards-compatible games in the next couple of days.

If the Xbox One were to add backwards compatibility support for original Xbox games, which titles would you like to see made playable? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Wait 'COULD' 5 gigs of ram and enough power to run 20 original Xboxs? You need to be fired.

This system could run true Win 10 OS for pete's sake. This system should have been REPLACING a casual PC users PC.

@Kinguard73: Which would make it a security risk, plus a console optimised for gaming doesn't generally work well as a PC. They are designed to run one or two apps really really well, not true multi-tasking.

The original Xbox could run Linux (unofficially) but it was rubbish compared to a PC of LOWER specifications. Same went from the PS3 which could OFFICIALLY run Linux and again, it ran poorly.

This is why Xbox One WILL run Windows 10 apps, but only the new style ones that technically aren't really Windows at all.

The 360 played Xbox One games, surely run whatever software the 360 did to play them in the 360 emulator lol...

@Slannmage: Not really. There were many games that didn't work.

Well they got "Grabbed By The Ghoulies" up and running on the One, so it's obviously possible. I'm sure it's just a matter of how many resources they want to throw at something like this in the future I suppose.

But surely if you still have original Xbox games you'd still have the console? I still have mine so I'd rather them focus on moving forward instead of back two generations

@normanislost: I still have my original Xbox and the 360 but they both bit the dust in less than a year. Xbox's were notoriously known to have a short life span back then ala the RRod. But I still have all my original Xbox games. I'd love to be able to go back and finish Star Wars NOTOR 1 &2 someday.

@normanislost: Old consoles don't last forever. I dread the day my fat launch model PS3 breaks. It's been my PS2/PS1 since 2007. My XBOX 360 is pushing 8 years since getting it replaced after my original pulled a RRoD. It's only a matter of time before it officially kicks the bucket as well.

It's nice to have new hardware play old stuff for that specific reason. Try thinking outside the box a little.

@normanislost: Old consoles break, the Xbox..... 1? was notorious for having a failing Disc drive.

Avatar image for bigdaddyshouse

@Slannmage: Exactly what happened me. My brand new original Xbox died on me in less than a year due to a faulty drive and motherboard. Never bothered to get it fixed. F'ing Microsoft lost my trust and lost me as a customer the second time after my 360 died on me only one year due to the F'ing RRod. After that I vowed never again to purchase another Xbox. Screw them.

@40mdf0: Yup, i still got my original Xbox, it powers up fine but the disc tray doesn't open.

Avatar image for Slannmage

@Foxhound1982: That is the belt drive that needs replacing or cleaning, if you bang the top when trying or put weight on it, it will eventually open. The trick is to keep a Disc in there all the time, as long as you keep a disc in there it will always open.

Emulating original Xbox games so I only need one console to play them is a step forward.

I think microsoft is doing something smart. Let me briefly explain. Their concept at launch was a one stop media station. This helps achieve this. As a lot of people have said, who cares about old games right? Valid, but think about basics and competition. The xbox one launched with a dated graphics card that will only continue to age. Need an example? Witcher 3, 900p, 30 fps. Can't even handle witcher at full 1080p. Now think about pc gamers and the rise of steam machines. All of these games will play. The only real upgrade consumers need to buy every so often is a 300 dollar graphics card and they can play in 4k resolution granted you have a decent quad core cpu. So adding more games available will add to the overall experience. Microsoft only makes money on their operating system to some pc gamers. Microsoft makes money guaranteed on xbox one systems, digital store sales, and xbox live. It's giving console gamers a "steam" or "origin" like experience. Least they are making an effort.

@nemeanli0n: "Microsoft only makes money on their operating system"

Yeah which about 100 times what they make off of the Xbox

Avatar image for Printul_Noptii

there is no need for this as the only 3 games people really want to play IF they have the old Xbox are Halo 1-2 and Ninja Gaiden Black which all work on the Xbox 360 so yeah xD

Avatar image for alexatkin

@Printul_Noptii: Wrong, there is Burnout 2 and Burnout 3. The former of which has serious performance issues on Xbox 360.

What I'm saying is that we don't need an emulator of a so so emulator, as powerful as the X1 is, they could make a much better emulator from scratch one that can do a better job at emulating a 15 year old nvidia video card.

Just another reason why this current generation is a joke. Companies want to focus on the past than the present.

Jet Set Radio Future, or don't even bother.

Can't think of anything other than Conker: Live & Reloaded that would really matter. but we've got the N64 version on the Rare Replay now...

Toejam & Earl 3 maybe? Just 'cause... why not?

Please don't use the 360's BC engine as we know how well that worked out. Do an original Xbox emulator from scratch. I'm sure the X1 being much more powerful than the 360 could do a better job.

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

@diaproject: All 3 of which totally sucked. Rainbow six is way to tactical to be any fun, not to mention I was tired of the 'stop the terrorists' nonsense before the 90s ended, PGR is racing on a closed circuit... so that's immediately out, and Panzer Dragoon is the crappiest star fox clone I've ever played.
