Xbox Live Was Down, But It's Back Up Again, You're Not Ever Gonna Keep It Down

Reconnected.

Xbox Live services are currently suffering an outage. According to the Xbox Live Status page, those trying to connect will find they have limited to no access. The site states that core services such as signing in, as well as creating, managing, or recovering accounts are impacted. [Update: Xbox Live services are coming back online. Let's all celebrate by listening to Chumbawamba.]

The outage is happening across Xbox One, Xbox on Windows 10, Xbox 360, and Xbox on other devices--so, pretty much anything that can sign into services. Xbox Support on Twitter has acknowledged the issue.

Now Playing: Gears 5 Review In Progress Video

The latest update on the status page states Microsoft's "engineers and developers are actively continuing to resolve the issue causing some members to have problems signing in to Xbox Live. Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience."

The outage will no doubt be frustrating to those who have early access to Gears 5, a core component of which is multiple multiplayer mode. Alongside the core campaign, which can be played co-operatively, there's the competitive multiplayer, Horde mode, and the new Escape mode. Naturally, there are many other games that rely on the Xbox Live network to function properly, most notably Fortnite.

Although Gears 5 is available to a select group of people now, it becomes widely available on September 10. In our Gears 5 review in progress, Phil Hornshaw said it "is very much a return of those best elements of Gears of War" but with "a focus on making the game feel somewhat more adaptive to your particular ways of playing."

He continued: "Whether you want campaign or co-op, Competitive or Quickplay, there's an option for you in Gears 5, and plenty of stuff to reward you for time spent and skill gained. Gears 5 might suffer from some of the same storytelling missteps as its predecessors, and it might not venture far out."

@Ice-Cube: It doesn't, you switch the console to "offline mode" (something most people don't know or do) and it works perfectly fine (minus the online components), even if its a digital version (but needs to be designated as your home console for digital versions).

Honestly, its amazing how many people don't know you need to turn on offline mode otherwise the console will just keep trying to get online or access cloud saves and it won't work.

For everyone freaking out about not able to play games just switch your console to offline mode and it will work unless it's an always online game like anthem lol.

The day Xbox One's most anticipated series makes a comeback and the servers are down? No doubt, salty fanboys taking potshots at Gamepass and digital game buying Xbox One fans. Unbelievable there were Sony fans celebrating this last night and this morning. Gaming is no fun if you ruin it for others.

Gears 5 looks so good & no surprise it is crippling servers, and it came out during a dry spell. seems very well timed! And I said I was not going to fall for it, but I watch the streamers and come on, it just looks & plays like so much fun...I can't help myself. I am in for the pre-order. I can online imagine how huge the next Halo will be on XBOX TWO.

Whenever Xbox Live is not working I go to the network settings and select "Go Offline".

It's the only thing that makes my Xbox One behave like a genuine offline console when this happens.

Just commenting this because I know many people that claim this cripples their Xbox when it happens because they can't sign in and access their games/saves. I played GTAV offline for 3 hours last night without a hitch and when I was back Online, I was awarded the achievements I earned offline, and my latest save synced to the cloud. Its annoying something like Achievements is an Online feature, but the point is, the Xbox plays the offline portions of games just fine when it's offline.

@Blade_Runner_07: Yes, gladly I found about it on Google. I was pissed because I could not even play disk-games because I could not sign in on my profile. Then I followed the instructions to went offline and voila, I could play any game (with the exception of Diablo III). It should be pointed out that digital games (including BC XBox 360 games) can only be played offline in consoles designated as 'My Home'.

@hjroman:

I'm guessing this is the hangover effect of what they were planning for always online before Phil took over. Its a bit crap you have to change settings though, and I guess they will fix this with the next console though.

@hjroman: Right. Luckily most people I know play their own games on their home console. I know game sharing is big for certain people but if you are buying an Xbox One expecting to live off of your friends game library and whatever the online subscriptions services provide, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you really love playing a certain game, buy it. Unless what your looking for is on a Nintendo console, most games drop below $20 within a couple of years of release. With that said, we are still a good 20 years out from the internet being as common and dependable as electricity.

Not arguing physical vs digital, but rather ownership vs subscription and exactly how much more dependable one is over the other. Subscription is great though, don't get me wrong. People just seem ignorant about exactly how much they will have access to when an internet connection isn't available.

I can understand why gamepass wasn't working but even the Halo MCC game, that i own and only wanted to play the campaign, wasn't working. Makes me think that i don't want to put money into something that i'll never own.

Lol, LOL ?? Microsoft engineers knew this would happen but with Gamepass and gears being offered that huuuUuuge surge in traffic has really crippled the servers, called azure.

So are we really ready for always online game streaming really.

The future via decentralised game networks to mitigate the load, similar to how playstation 3 offered the community a choice to support research.

Aah in herein lies the issue with having games tied to servers/internet. Pretty much can’t play anything once there’s issues.

@cejay0813: Its not really as big deal as everyone likes to make it out to be. As long as its not an online only game like Destiny, all you need to do is switch the console to offline mode (this is the part most people forget or don't do and get frustrated when the console tries to connect over and over to no avail) and your games will work perfectly fine and even track everything to update it when you get back online. Even your digital purchases will function fine provided your playing on your designated home console.
