Now Playing: GS News Update: Xbox Live Is Reportedly Faster, More Dependable Than PSN

Network speed and reliability are two important factors for any online service, including Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Now, Microsoft has released the results of an independent study that claims Xbox Live is generally faster and more reliable than PlayStation Network.

This means "you're getting the fastest, most dependable multiplayer experience possible," Xbox's head of operations Dave McCarthy said in an Xbox Wire post.

Xbox Live and PSN, as well as other online gaming networks, go down from time to time whether that be the result of an attack, maintenance, or something else entirely. McCarthy said it's great to see the new report, from IHS Markit, speak positively about Xbox Live. He also spoke briefly about how Microsoft remains committed to further improving its network and online services to benefit gamers.

"We recognize it is an ongoing journey that requires considerable investment, feedback, and improvement," he said. "Managing and maintaining a network is complex and there is an army of individuals who work tirelessly on Xbox Live, because at the heart of it, they are gamers just like you. Our goal is to try and see bumps in the road before they start, or get through them as smoothly as possible. Just know that we have a team who works 24×7 to optimize your gaming experience."

According to the IHS Markit study (read the full thing here; PDF), Xbox Live was faster than PSN when looking at the time it took to log into the network service and game servers, as well as the speed at which uses could join friends in a party and upload images.

As for multiplayer itself, the study gave the edge to Xbox Live when it came to how often the service was successful in allowing players to log in to game servers and stay in a match to completion without an interruption. Overall, Xbox Live ranked higher than PSN for the "overall experience" category; this measured things like the speed at which you can invite friends to a party and voice chat quality.

"We're always looking for ways to make sure your experience is the very best, and this is just a small milestone in the journey to delivering the best possible gaming experience this year and beyond," McCarthy said. "In fact, right now, we’re working hard to bring new features like Clubs, Looking for Group and Arena on Xbox Live as well as cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC to make it easier than ever to connect with people who have shared interests over Xbox Live. We look forward to sharing more as these features roll out worldwide."

The IHS Markit study was conducted in June and July of 2016; it got its results from tests that used top-selling games that feature matchmaking support. You can read the full report here, while some of the slides can be seen in the gallery above.

Apparently not tracked in this survey were download speeds. Xbox One and PS4 users alike might agree that speeds could be better, especially given how big some games have become.

There is a issue with this...

For this last quarter xbox consoles are allegedly topping sales in the US, yet during the same qtr the number of xbl subscribers dropped by over 3 million... significantly more than the "sales" of that qtr.....

A bit fishy ...

I'm not surprised

Despite both services having their own preferences on wither they depend on it like being committed about their reliability but at the expense of being always online to get all the xbl features or being offline without sacrificing psn features like unlocking Trophies and other things but at the expense of the service reliability I think they both found the right consumers who cares about their individual experience. But I prefer the xbox when I play at my friends house cause most of the times my friends don't appreciate dealing with online problems when it comes to logging to their accounts regardless of which platform.

Its funny this being said here. Gamespot. Known pro Microsoft supporter. Yet inown both and ive had far more down time on live than PSN last 2 years. All this is a paid adverb to promote Xbox live buy a sight and company that receives bonus and incentives to post stuff like this. Gamespot is pro xbox and has been for years. Thanks for a good article and dipping deeper inyo Microsoft wallet even more.

Well... it is a first attempt.

Not entirely convinced of the “independence” of this study though.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

Plus XBL hasnt been hacked twice like PSN.

Avatar image for goodgamesguy

The fact that Microsoft gave the edge to their own system is not surprising at all... I own both systems and in my experience the online is identical.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@goodgamesguy: by identical you mean when Lizard Squad and Lulzsec brought PSN to its knees?

Avatar image for goodgamesguy

@Gravity_Slave: yep that's what I meant

Avatar image for allever

My only complaints about this is the fact the only people talking about it is Microsoft, it is being hosted on, the graphs don't really say much about how it was measure (e.g. by how much), and the tests done seem really pointless (e.g. matchmaking (it's how developers do it), which games were tested, etc). It's hard to believe this is an "independent" study.

Avatar image for IndependenceYou

@allever: this is a well thought out way of saying. Microsoft deffff paid to have this done for there benefit. To that i say. Smart move microsoft. This hasnt been done on consoles yet. Soo wellll done pullin the ace out the sleeve. 👍🏼👏👏👏 But most gamers arent as stoopid as you think. ;P

Avatar image for IndependenceYou

@IndependenceYou: Also. I was confused if it was a microsoft employee in the quote or the "independent" study employee. Since it legit sounded like a microsoft advertisement, didnt even try an sell it like it was a real study. Hahaha

Don't you know what's even faster? PS4 sales. On top of that, the PS5 will be coming soon, in the middle of 2018. So, Xbox losers stop getting ahead of yourselves because the Playstation consoles will always be ahead and better. #Dealwithit #Playstation>Xbox

Avatar image for luis2113

@doggiezilla2: xbl has always been better than psn.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@luis2113: except for that time from 2009 to today...

Avatar image for luis2113

@Mirimon78: No xbl has always have been better.

Psn has never been better.

Psn has gotten better than it was on ps3 but it's still slow. It's unstable I don't even o lay black ops kn psn anymore because I lag out of games every single time I have a session. Games take longer to download. On xbl I can download a 50gb game in 2 to 3 hours. How long will it take you on psn 10 hours

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@luis2113: lol... listen to yourself... 2 to 3 hours for 50 gigs???you silly xbot....

Under 30 minutes on ps to download install, update and boot up..... same for pc...

Get over it.

Avatar image for luis2113

@Mirimon78: now I know you don't own a playstation. That or the servers I connect to restrict my download speeds.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

You cant possibly know what I have or do not, and it is unwise to make any such assumption.

your isp likely does throttle sony products, several were paid to do just that despite recent law prohibiting this behavior.

Avatar image for luis2113

@Mirimon78: that's crazy. Yeah I know I was just kidding.

Avatar image for harmlessguy

@doggiezilla2: And pc smashes them all whats the point? The pro is about 40% slower just on paper to the scorpio so, theres that...

Avatar image for irish40

@doggiezilla2: I take it you don't own both consoles I do and I could careless. I heard nothing about a PS5 coming out in the middle of 2018 only the pro in November which still doesn't have the power of the Scorpio. I still think it sucks the pro doesn't play 4k bluray disks.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@doggiezilla2: first off ya blind fanboy, XBone sales beat PS4 last month. Losers? Yeah, you just summed yourself up right there.

Avatar image for i_p_daily

@doggiezilla2: So much salt in one post yikes.

Avatar image for doggiezilla2

@i_p_daily: Like salty pretzels :3

Avatar image for kanekan-slaugh

Duh, but that's not really something I care for anyway. I game sometimes on multiplayer not often though. The main reason I have an xbox is because I find the controller to feel marginally better.

Avatar image for kingnyc1

Nobody plays xbox ...its faster because nobody is using it..LMAO

Avatar image for luis2113

@kingnyc1: xbl has more paid users than psn. Psn only has 20million across all of its platforms.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@luis2113: paid???

Lol. Only paid users use xbl.. total users using them > paid...

Sony sees and raises 270 million users on psn

Avatar image for luis2113

@Mirimon78: I myself probably have 20 of those psn accounts. Sony sent an email this spring saying that they were up to 19 million paid users on psn across all platforms. I don't know where you got 270million.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@luis2113: you are confusing psn for ps plus. Psn itself is free, hosts accross 7 platforms atm globally. Ps plus is not psn.

Avatar image for luis2113

@Mirimon78: you have a point there the email only specified on paid subs.

Avatar image for blitzking

@kingnyc1: 25 million people no using it? Do you need help?

Avatar image for kaselator

As a PS4 owner (mainly game on PC), I'm proud to say that I bet the player count will change drastically to the Xbox side when Scorpio arrives. Can't wait for that consoles' details

Avatar image for xxdavidxcx87

I hate it when Microsoft or Sony try to fuel the fanboy wars with immature bs like this, I always find people with scrappy connections mostly ruin online gaming, haven't noticed psn being down hardly at all but then I don't play that often.

Avatar image for FLEEBS

In other news, the sky is blue.

Avatar image for xutroy

@FLEEBS: And water is wet.

Avatar image for Shantmaster_K

Always had been.

Avatar image for Flyin3lvl

""as well as the speed at which uses could join friends in a party and upload images.""

oh yeah it takes soooooo long to join a chat by time i get into the party they have gone

and those images uploads- im still waiting for that last of us pic to upload to twitter i posted two years ago

and that broadcast share the lag is so bad the one from last week just got off the start screen ..........................

its like a few seconds job done ?!

Avatar image for wthisjums

With 20 million less users eating up the bandwidth you'd think it would be a little better.......................

Avatar image for CyrusDrake20

What good is a better network speed when most of the games suck?

Avatar image for blitzking

@CyrusDrake20: Butthurt? The games are great you should try a few, fanboy.

Avatar image for barcaazul

Isn't this a bit like Am tobacco releasing a study on the harms of E cigarettes / Vaping?

Either way, everyone has different ISP', geography ect, so somewhat pointless.

Avatar image for Elranzer

PSN... shitty network.

Xbox... shitty D-pad.

Such is the circle of life.

Avatar image for starjay009

Hasn't that always been the case throughout the two corporations' gaming history ? XLIVE and PSN on the 360 vs PS3; we all knew which system was the best for MP. And now history is repeating. As simple as that.
