Now Playing: Scorpio Announcement from Xbox Conference at E3 2016

One concern some have raised about Microsoft's Project Scorpio and Sony's PlayStation Neo is the potential burden of supporting two consoles, each with different specs, at the same time.

Now, Xbox Head of Operations Dave McCarthy has responded. He told GameSpot that Scorpio can offer a "seamless" experience for developers.

"Obviously, listening to their feedback on Xbox One influenced our approach on Xbox One S and has influenced our approach to Project Scorpio overall," he said. "So we really do intend it to be a seamless experience going across that ecosystem of devices, including Windows 10 as much as possible. We're learning and improving in that space on a regular basis."

Games you own on Xbox One will play on Project Scorpio, and in some cases, PC as well (thanks to Play Anywhere). McCarthy said Microsoft's broader goal is to allow developers to reach "the whole canvas of gamers."

Previously, McCarthy said he thinks Scorpio will "wipe out" traditional console generational boundaries.

"That term of an upgrade is gone. As a gamer, it's pretty cool," he said. "Because then I know the games I buy and play today and the controllers I use today are going to work on that machine of tomorrow. And that's the real major step-change."

No Caption Provided

Also in our interview, McCarthy said developers may tailor their games to specific devices, suggesting there may indeed be Scorpio-only games, as had been suggested earlier.

"[Developers] will always want to write to specific capabilities and devices," he explained. "Giving our developers some choice in what they choose to leverage as they do that is key to our whole philosophy moving forward. They've responded well to it as we've shared the plans with them."

Some of the developers who sung the praises of Scorpio in its announcement video included Fallout 4 and Skyrim director Todd Howard, as well as EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund. Microsoft didn't tell everyone about Scorpio before its announcement, however, as Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata said he didn't find out about it until Microsoft's briefing.

On the other side of the fence, PlayStation president Andrew House also broached the subject of the potential burden new consoles may place on developers. He claimed it will only require a "small but manageable" amount of work to get a game working on both the old and new PlayStation 4 consoles.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft have yet to provided any specifics about what exactly will be required on the part of developers. Developers that ship games on PC are already familiar with releasing games for systems whose power varies depending on hardware configurations.

I just might have to get in on some of the cross platform action...... Like Xbone vs PC as they are talking about doing.... Then I will play their games on my PC all the while massacring my fellow brethren on console. FPS anyone...!?!?

Microsoft just convinced me to not buy an Xbox. It's just a PC now, and all its exclusives will be on Windows, so I may as well just stick to my PC and buy the other two consoles, saving some money.

Even if its games weren't coming to Windows, I still wouldn't buy an Xbox until Scorpio releases. But now there's no reason at all to buy an Xbox because it won't have any exclusives.

Avatar image for liza104_basic

@lostn: Technically Xbox was always a mini PC. From the very beginning. And how does Xbox games going to Windows 10 stop me or (any other Xbox fan in general) from playing on Xbox? The games are still console exclusive. "It wont have exclusives" logic makes no fucking sense. Well... unless you're really a Piss station fan. Quite frankly Microsoft doesn't give a damn if you play on Xbox or Windows 10. They're getting every penny regardless.

Why the hell should I buy xb1 s when there making xbox scorpio? I'm still pissed that the xb1 is weaker than PS4. Why shouldn't I just wait for the upgraded PS4? I f-ing hate Microsoft. They're such f-ing thieves.

@conquistador1Something tells me you aren't an Xbox fan. Yes, get a weak PS NEO, That makes sense after what you said prior. It seems the Scorpio has made you Sony shills lose your goddamn minds.

@conquistador1: really? Just upgrade to the weeker PS4 Neo and problem solved. When PSVR hits you will be all ready and that's fine by me I will upgrade to the Scorpio and life will go on...... it's all about taste and if you have none or can't tell the difference in flavors there's not much that can be done for you 😲👻

Use all that power for 1080 60fps, or give gamers the choice on resolution. I do hope the Scorpio is also an upgradable (hardware) console.

How much longer until Sony acknowledges the possibility of NEO-only games too?

Avatar image for lostn

@radiotoxic: Neo is an iterative upgrade. It's slightly more powerful. Not so much more powerful that a game can run on Neo but not the original.

PS Neo is the "slim" ps4, but with a nice boost in performance. It's more comparable to the XBO S. There is another PlayStation coming within a year of Scorpio.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@Hvac0120: Sony is moving to 3 year refresh cycles, in 2019 the next Playstation will play 4K games at 60 fps without breaking a sweat.

Avatar image for liza104_basic

@Hvac0120: No there isn't. Do you really think Sony could go toe to toe with Microsoft on the hardware wars from here on out? it aint happening. lol. Besides do you know how dumb that sounds? dont expect a PS5 anytime soon. Actually didn't Sony say that themselves? they actually said they weren't sure a PS5 would ever come.

That would piss off PS4 and NEO buyers if Sony tried that shit. (not that i care) Need I remind you, Microsoft just bought linked in for 26 billion dollars. They have a ton of cash. Microsoft isn't letting Sony beat them in any spec war ever again. And you Sony shills have yourselves to blame. Ooooppps I mean thank. :)

@Eddie619: That's funny, This just looks like more hopes and wishes from Sony shills trying to make the NEO look less weaker. Not surprised it's from Neogaf. A lot of them lost their damn minds and ate massive amounts of crow when the Scorpio as announced. It was Amazing.

Anyways, If this article were true Sony would have went ahead and Announced the NEO at E3 instead of Chickening out 3 days prior. I'm not shocked to see this popping up out of nowhere. Nobody is talking about the NEO.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@liza104_basic: what sucks is Xbox games are too short and their exclusives list is even shorter, if it was about power the original Xbox would wasted PS2 in sales. PS4 Neo will have a year head start and destroy Xbox in sales like it's been doing the last 3 years.

Avatar image for tarheelsforever

@liza104_basic: a fanboy to the fullest lol. by the way that little company called "Sony" destroyed, and continues to destroy, that giant of a company called Microsoft when it comes to console sales. and it really doesnt matter who has the more powerful system. Microsoft's marketing team are always destined to mess things up regardless. they seem to make missteps when it comes to marketing their consoles at every turn. Sony just knows how to run a console business better. to sum things up even if Microsoft has a power advantage it will matter not. :)

Avatar image for liza104_basic

@tarheelsforeverLol and Microsoft knows how to run a better business overall. Maybe Sony can learn a thing or two about running a healthy company in general. I'll support the company that keeps murdering Sony in profits every quarter. Microsoft makes damn near what Sony on a whole is worth. You keep harping about sales kiddo. It wont matter next year.

Microsoft messed up with the Xbox One, They can redeem themselves with Scorpio. I know, the thought makes you shit your pants. Jump ship, while you still can. That's all i have to say to you.

Avatar image for tarheelsforever

HUH,HUH,HUH??? youre claims dont even make sense. also, you need to chill out and take a breather. you seem to get mighty upset when someone says something bad about xbox lmho. did you forget to take your meds???

@liza104_basic: Regarding the LinkedIn purchase, keep in mind that the $26 billion Microsoft paid to acquire it is is over 70% of the value of Sony's entire company! All of Sony (not just the PlayStation division) is worth about $36 billion. Microsoft, by comparison, is worth over $400 billion. Sony also continues to struggle financially, while Microsoft is healthy.

Financially, Sony is a fly and Project Scorpio just might be the fly swatter.

Avatar image for deactivated-5893d17ed65b4

@liza104_basic: Sony is more of a hardware company than Microsoft. They can easily go "toe to toe" with a software company.

Edit:

Just read the read the rest of your post.

You. Are. An. Idiot.

Avatar image for liza104_basic
liza104_basic

@Lacerz: Nah, the idiot is you. Sony cant go toe to toe with Microsoft, key words (from here on out) And i choose to be nice saying that because we all know Sony couldn't go toe to toe with Microsoft financially in anything. Maybe when they were worth a damn in the 80's and 90's. They dont have disposable funds like Microsoft. I dont give a rats ass about them being a hardware company. The only hardware Sony is pushing is PS4. What else is relevant from them hardware wise? Their shit isn't even as good as Samsung, Canon and other companies. Also YOU have to be a fucking moron if you think Microsoft is going to let them get the upper hand spec wise ever again.

They wont be able to keep up financially. And as someone else said, Sony better pray Microsoft doesn't go through with the iterative refreshing every 4 or 5 years. Sony doesn't stand a chance. After the 3 years of BS Sony fanboys have thrown in Xbox users direction, Life as a Playstation user will only be hell in the near future. Just look now, Scorpio is 18 months out and it's already gotten The Sony fan bases Panties in a bunch. Next fall cant get here soon enough.

Oh and one more thing. Sony has got a lot of praying to do this fall, if the VR gimmicks flop they are in deep shit again. If NEO flops, they are waste deep in even more shit. Microsoft has no real stake in VR, so if Vive and The rift fails it doesn't effect them. The Scorpio probably wont fail, because it is a substantial upgrade and most of the Xbox community is excited for it.

Avatar image for tarheelsforever

@liza104_basic: bottom line is this.for a company (sony) who cant compete with microsoft, sony is destroying microsoft this console generation. lmho

Avatar image for Logan303
Logan303

@Lacerz: Sony doesn't have the resources to compete. Microsoft is worth over 11 times what Sony is as a company. Microsoft isn't struggling financially. Sony is.

The only reason the PS4 was more powerful, and thus more successful, than the Xbox One is because Microsoft misjudged the market and designed compromises into the hardware. They've now acknowledged their mistakes and under Phil Spencer's guidance, have charted the right course. Project Scorpio proves that they now will accept no compromises on hardware design. Should they decide to continue rapidly evolving their console technology, Sony will be left in the dust (already has happened with Neo) as Sony just can't afford to spend the money needed to maintain that pace of innovation.

@Logan303:

I basically already but all consoles but after the shit MS tried to pull with DRM and always online check I refused to buy the XB1. Also I hate the fact that a central part of the console that can easily breaks is not possible to replace easily by the user without voiding warranty, in talking about the HD. MS made tons of mistake with the one and they don't seem to fix it with Scorpio still. One good thing is that the ugly power brick is finally integrated, but if you read between the lines it sounds like the online thing might be catch again. I hope I'm wrong though. I'm a bit interested in the Scorpio but I hate it when I can't access the hardware.

And lastly with the new concept they introduced where games are available on win 10 then I'm sort of happy since it was unexpected. That was a cool thing. I just hope they don't mess up the release with another DRM thing and hopefully change the design so the HD is can be replaced by users.

Games are everything! Not Graphic POWER! GTFO!!!

Avatar image for radiotoxic
RadioToxic

@excelevo: I think that's a classic fanboy issue, regardless of the brand they pledge allegiance to. Actually this whole thing I call the 'Digital Foundry culture' started back in 2006/07 when every game released on the 360 would smash it's PS3 counterpart without pity, a situation which continued for the most part of last gen.

In that time, the Sony boys would only say "IT'S NOT ABOUT GRAPHICS, GAMEPLAY IS EVERYTHING", while the XBOX camp reminded them every other day that their console was UGLY, BIG, EXPENSIVE AND UNDERPOWERED (sounds familiar?) So, when things turned the other way around with the PS4 and X1 this fanbot nonsense was blown out of proportion with constant comparisons on even the most unnoticeable things, bringing to the console world stuff that was previously only relevant to PC gamers, and I truly think THAT stupid war of fanboys is one of the main reasons we are witnessing the end of the traditional console era. And I'm not happy.

Avatar image for Logan303
Logan303

@dirtyvu: And it's going to be even worse if they actually try to drive that VR headset with the existing PS4, as they apparently plan to do. Sony got lucky with the PS4 because their competition shot itself in the foot. That won't be happening again, and by announcing Project Scorpio Microsoft has essentially slammed the door on the PS4 party and reset the game board.

I don't get people bringing up a companies worth as a reason to beat another, or even the power. There is so many other factors that dictates success or not.

Yes MS earns more money and is worth more, but it sure ain't the xbox that has brought them all that wealth. It's their core businesses. And what makes you think they want to spend any more than sony is willing to into the same segment just because they have more in the bank. They still won't invest more than they think they will get in return. And sony so far has more cause to invest more into it's gaming businesses than MS. It's a core business for sony and it has shown great returns, the same cannot be said about MS hence why they have tried to show investors like myself an increased return by putting all their games on another platform aswell.

And "6TFLOPS kills 4.1TFLOPS" or is like "bringing a knife to a gunfight"... well if you mean you are unarmed for the actual start of the fight and then come back alot later with a gun after you already got stabbed... then yes but like I said you might get stabbed and die before you can "win" with the gun. Let's look at history of "guns and knife fights". Ps2 was a spoon compared to og xbox, the ps1 was a plastic knife compared to N64 and game cube, the wii was a butterknife brought to two other with guns...

The neo releases early, sony has alot better support (like 2-3:1 compared to xbox) everywhere but north america, the xbox exclusives have another even stronger patform as an alternative. And most likely the price of the scorpio won't be for the mass market while the neo will most likely be closer to the casual console mass market. So I wouldn't assume a win for scorpio, a product we really know nothing about other than a few specs and a whole lot of corporate promises based solely on specs and parent company funds.
