Xbox Exec Clarifies Comments About DLC Exclusivity and More

"Paying marketing funds so another console's base can't play a piece of content doesn't feel like growth."

Xbox executive Phil Spencer has spoken out to clarify some comments he made earlier about how the video game industry can grow in the future.

In 2015, Spencer said he wanted that year's E3 show to focus more on Microsoft's own franchises and expanding them. Asked on Twitter recently if this is still Microsoft's directive, Spencer said it is. He cited things like EA Access, Fallout mods, the Game Preview program, and cross-play between Xbox One and PC that are things that "move gaming forward," and in some cases are only available on Xbox.

"Our [first-party] IP should do the same," Spencer said, referencing efforts that push gaming forward.

He went on to say the continued support for Halo 5, particularly its Forge mode, is an example of Microsoft continuing to invest in and grow its own franchises.

As for what Spencer doesn't want to do, he said, "Paying marketing funds so another console's base can't play a piece of content doesn't feel like growth."

This might sound like a dig at Sony's timed-exclusivity deal with Activision for Call of Duty and Destiny DLC, but Spencer doesn't see it that way. "People getting worked up on this," he said when someone suggested he was being hypocritical. "Never said Xbox has never done this, not calling out others, just not practice I like, that's it."

Microsoft has its own co-marketing deals, too, one of which is with Ubisoft for The Division DLC.

I dont mind the 2 weeks exclusivity Xbox have. What is unacceptable is the 1 or 2 years DLC exclusivity Sony is paying for. What Microsoft does is insignificant compared to Sony. In terms of third party exclusives, at least Xbox has them for a year, Sony completely blocks Xbox. Again, Sony is way worst anti-customer than Xbox and nobody can deny that.

@Aleperez75: I would have thought after building a commanding lead in which you can't be cuaght, they would stop trying to buy a piece of damn near every game or better yet allow cross-play.

@Aleperez75: and M$ did it with Tomb Raider an entire game as opposed to just optional content. Nintendo did it with Bayonetta 2. All 3 major console companies are guilty of it.

@tomwenz: Microsoft supported financially Tomb Raider and Ni tendo funded Bayonetta 2 and both of them published the game meaning they carried the risk of financial fails

@7tizz: Just like backwards compatibilty goes way back to the Sega Genesis / Megadrive -master system converter- is as far as my memory goes back. Not sure how anyone can say Sony did it first. Ridiculous argument, who did what first.

@nhowell14: It's Phil Spencer saying this, he wasn't in charge during the 360 era.

@nhowell14: Let's ignore that fact that he wasn't running Xbox back then, did you even read the whole article? He literally addressed that.

@mprince131: lol. well it's always amusing to be around long enough to see the winds of change. Microsoft literally invented pay to play DLC with EA, stop pretending it didn't happen just to take a side.

But just to clarify I find it all too comical "hearing" this from anyone in the Microcrap camp.

@7tizz: def aware that there were home game consoles well before the original playstation. As it was a vindictive business venture as retaliation for Ninty not going through with a business deal with sony.

though the way some of you defend particular companies is a bit sheepish.

everyone likes to root for the underdog, but Microsoft just sucks. I'm sincerely disturbed that anyone would think anything that company does is genuine or original.

@7tizz:

My point is that these companies only want your money and if they see something that works, usually, instead of innovation...they copy. More of a monkey-see, monkey-do type model of the current business era. Mostly with American companies ironically.

or to paint this in a light you'd comprehend, we shouldn't be loyal to anything any company does, but its ok to be a fan of a great product. So far it's usually Apple, Nintendo or Sony that makes great products. as sales #s reflect. Does it mean you should mindlessly purchase anything from these companies? no...duh. The ps4 pro is a mistake and the Wii U was a joke along with my opinion on Apple and the iphone 7 or anything post jobs era isn't really that great.

Having said that, absolutely nothing Microsoft has done in at the very least, the last 2 decades, has been worth the time even typing about. There's endless negative internet memes about windows for a very very solid reason. It's always been crap, we just have to endure it as part of our servitude

How can you not get that?

What's really funny about this statement is that Microsoft is notorious for buying exclusivity since it has limited first party studios. Look at the Xbox One's pathetic launch:
Dead Rising 3- Capcom
Fighter Within - Ubisoft
Ryse: Son of Rome - Crytek

Third party exclusives bought by "paying marketing funds so another console's base can't play a piece of content..." Now the games were meh at best, as have been most MS exclusives, but still.

Then there were these:
Plants vs. Zombies - EA
Titanfall - EA
Sunset Overdrive - Insomniac

Of course, Microsoft's lagging sales have made these deals start to disappear, with more and more going to Sony...which is probably why Microsoft is making this an issue. It was okay when they thought they could control the market, but now that they can't, it's a bad thing.

@Lacerz: I think microsoft should cut minecraft support for playstation 4. Also they need to put their money to use, and make all dlc exclusive to xbox. Sony will die so fast lol.

@Lacerz: There is a pretty big difference between purchasing exclusivity and paying to publish the game. Half of those games you listed were specifically published and funded by Microsoft so it makes perfect sense that they would be exclusive.

Dead Rising 3, Ryse and Sunset Overdrive were all funded by Microsoft and possibly would not exist without their funding. Sunset Overdrive for example was turned down by Sony so it could have been in the opposite circumstances for example if Sony had decided to fund it. I'm not even sure you could include fighter within in that list, it was designed as a Kinect game so it makes sense it would be on Xbox.

The only games I would really consider an issue would be Tomb Raider, Titanfall and maybe Plants vs Zombies since they were all expressly purchased exclusivity for periods of 6+ months but then again Sony have things like Destiny exclusivity so its not like either company can particularly be blamed. I have less issue with shorter deals like the 1 month DLC shit though, its hardly long enough to worry about.

And Sunset Overdrive is outstanding. Much better than anything the PS4 had to offer by then. It is one of my favorite games this generation and most people who play the agree with me.

@Lacerz:

I'm going to say this again Lacerz. When you publish a piece of content you aren't just paying for marketing rights. You pay for development costs, licensing, localization, etc. Yes, the content is exclusive, but they are distinctly different. In one scenario you have a game that is already made, with DLC that is likely close to completion. On the other you have a game whose development is being funded so the game can actually be sold and played.

If you wanted an argument you could have used the Division exclusive DLC.

Also, Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall aren't really "meh" at best. Those two games are fun to play, and had generally positive review scores. Sunset Overdrive is like Infamous combined with Ratchet and Clank.

I did read.

You said "Third party exclusives bought by 'paying marketing funds so another console's base can't play a piece of content...' Now the games were meh at best, as have been most MS exclusives, but still."

Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall are both third party exclusives for the Xbox One. How am I supposed to know that you only mean the above list and not the below list?
