Xbox Boss Wants Fortnite Devs To Leave On Accidental Xbox One And PS4 Cross-Play Feature

"I would have liked to see them leave it on."

Recently, it was discovered that Epic's sandbox action game Fortnite allowed cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The feature was swiftly disabled, with Epic saying it was a "configuration issue" that led to cross-play being available in the first place.

Naturally, someone asked Xbox boss Phil Spencer for a reaction to this situation. Spencer, who has openly called for Sony to allow cross-play with Xbox One, told a fan on Twitter, "I would have liked to see them leave it on."

Microsoft has not shied away from talking about its desire for cross-play support with competing platforms. Rocket League is set to work across Xbox One, Switch, and PC, while the developer of the Microsoft-owned Minecraft franchise is open to cross-play between Xbox One and PS4. For its part, Sony has said it's not going to allow cross-play for its own reasons, one of which is protecting the security of younger users.

In March 2016, Microsoft publicly announced that it was open to connecting Xbox Live to other gaming networks, including PlayStation Network and Nintendo's own online service.

Microsoft's Dave McCarthy told GameSpot at E3 this year that the company has had discussions with Sony about cross-play, but Sony is "not quite there yet."

"My hope is that they join the party as well because I think it's an awesome thing to do for gamers," he said.

When a lot of games that support Cross-Play between Xbox and PC start rolling out, Sony is going to fall behind. A lot of people want to play with their friends and if a console and PC have that connnection, Playstation will be lacking. There will still be a desire to play there and a lot of players obviously. My brother has Xbox and I have Playstation. If he can play his games with me while i'm on my PC, he won't have to buy a PS4...

...then again I won't have to buy an Xbox either.... hmmmm

I'm upvoting any midly interesting gaming news that has nothing to do with Destiny 2. Videogame journalism is such a joke in this site.

@vfighter: glad you like it, maybe the quick sequel was to fix all that was wrong (not few) with the first game. Now I find it ironic that being so saturated of that game, I commit the irony to point it out out of a relevant article.

Weak move by Sony, period. reminds me when they said EA Access wasnt a good value for gamers and also making you pay to play backward compatible games. The for the gamers tag line is losing steam.

The reason the feature was disabled was because some PSN user was salty about him and his kid getting PWNed by and XBL user.

Sony supporters are are full of it. the whole argument that sony pursued cross play with the 360 is a fugazi. There is only a single comment that both companies where open to cross play last gen, but there is not a single go article outside of final fantasy being pushed for cross play.

Again it's a fugazi, fairy dusty, by Sony supporter to try and justify Sony's stupid position on the topic.

@billy90rickey:

No they don't but if that is your way of thinking maybe you should ask apple to lock your iPhone down so you can't send or receive messages or emails from non apple users.

Fact is game developers want this for thier games more than the player base. That is the direction games are moving towards. Having a unified ecosystem/platform. You want to stay in the past good luck with that.

@mike468: Except comparing it to phones isn't fair. See, there's a federal law that states all phones, regardless of manufacturers, must be able to communicate openly with one another. It's part of the same law that states no phone signal may ever be "blocked" and to stop open communication in the public sector.

Personally, I'm all for cross play. At least then I wouldn't have to buy 2 of the same systems and 2 of the same games to play with my kids in the same house. However, there's a point to not to having cross play available on different systems as well. See, when you allow cross play you're allowing the other system to "peek" into yours. This is why things like griefing and hacks are so widespread on among pc users. Game devs haven't developed a solution or "code" for completely locking down a "secure" connection. As long as there are hackers there will always be problems. Period. As long as those problems could exist and loopholes discovered or ways to negate proprietary security measures then cross play really has to be evaluated and the code looked at heavily.

@billy90rickey: we do need competition between our companies, or games will start to suck lol. I just dont see how it would hurt Sony to allow crossplay.

"one of which is protecting the security of younger users." So sony admits that their most users are fanboy kids who are raging over everything so they are protecting them? :D

It's not like PS4 do not have toxic users in MP games it's same situation everywhere, Just say that they don't want crossplay for no reason, be A MAN lol.

I can understand the reason Sony refuses cross play but looking at the big picture they will win this console generation at the cost of once again missing the boat on new innovations and markets due to such short term thinking the way one x was made should've sent alarm bells ringing throughout SCEA.

@billy90rickey: Neither company should have wasted their time with mid gen upgrades period. It's a failed experiment which hopefully won't happen again.

Meanwhile, in Redmond, WA...

Microsoft is preparing a lawsuit against the developers of the game that compromised the security of Microsoft's eco-system due to inadvertently allowing cross-play in their game.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's a headline we don't see in the near future.

Interesting...

They should allow for cross play, and then if you worry about predators, get the parents to switch cross play off. Or the other way around works too.

Seems like there are ways around this, but no one really wants to play ball.

Xbox boss needs to focus on first party exclusives for XB1, otherwise it will finish third, behind PS4 and Switch.

Enough distraction attempts with all this b.s. cross platform/backwards compatibility crap.

Avatar image for sodapoppimpski

@bat725: halo 6? did you forget about forza 7, sea of thieves, cuphead, state of decay, pubg, crackdown and may other games that are in motion. Xbox has plenty of first party titles that are upcoming or the past. Reality is first party games are a sliver of the gaming industry. 90% of sold games are 3rd party games. For it to be considered a great year for exclusives a console will have at most 2 excellent AAA releases, but most years there is 1. 1 to 2 games a year made by a certain company is a huge factor?

Avatar image for santinegrete

@sodapoppimpski: that dubious list needs to happen now. When they tell me the next big Gears of War 4 update was about characters with zombie easter bunny heads I lose my shit and my faith for the one. And my broadband... more than 4 gb for that crap?!

Avatar image for sodapoppimpski

@santinegrete: I agree. I have a feeling Microsoft will be showing some new AAA next year e3 but in the meantime we can have the best versions of 3rd party games coming out if you got the Scorpio

As long as they can protect children from predators, it would be cool. That was the main sticking point on Minecraft. I'm sure all would be for it because it doesn't really hurt any of the consoles involved. As long as each console needs a copy of the game to play. Also, PC FPS players would love it. They would own the console, controller players.

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU

@zyxahn: I don't get that argument though.

Of all the companies to work with Microsoft, why would Nintendo do it if would jeopardize the children?XD

Curious considering the reason Final Fantasy 14 doesn't exist on Xbox is because Microsoft refused to allow cross play and Square Enix refused to host Xbox only servers.

As a show of good face Microsoft should enable cross-play with Overwatch on PC and then Destiny 2, and another and another until players are no long accepting of having fragmented friends lists and identities across desperate systems. Do the right thing Microsoft and work with Blizzard/Activision to set the standard, meaning and experiences that we can expect from not only cross-play but identity management from system to system and game to game.

As a Computer Scientist I know that there are challenges with servers, networking, authentication as well as business relationships, but if anyone could go first I should be Blizzard and Microsoft, whom are two of the most profitable and leading edge software companies in the world.

I hope you are reading this Phil Spencer.

Go first, blaze the trail, lets have AAA titles...not just first party ones...playable in an active and healthy community of gamers who no longer have to choose their mode of play.

Avatar image for xdeathclawx

@scorliss: Is MS really in the way of all this?

Avatar image for scorliss

@xdeathclawx: @Mastermue it is not about MIcrosoft saying no. As we can all see Sony is saying no but the environment needs to change and I don't think Sony can do or is willing to do it. The large developers and service providers like Blizzard, Valve and Microsoft can make sweeping change and IMO the change of releasing all games to have cross play with PC should be something that Microsoft should pursue with a passion, not a subtext or a murmur. Once the lion share of games have been released, let's say over a years period, with cross play Sony will have a choice to play ball or to get out of the game as gamers will understand the concept of borderless friends and ture achivemtns that can carry from one system to another. Again Microsoft is not "in the way" but they are also not pushing the issue as hard as they should be.

they should just leave it on, as long as you can play with other players, just can't add xbox live users on playstation network and vice versa at lease the lobby wouldn't be low.
