Xbox Boss Teases Blue Dragon Xbox One Backwards Compatibility

Also, Phil Spencer says he has a "never say never" attitude about making Blue Dragon 2.

After confirming in August that Blue Dragon is coming to Xbox One through backwards compatibility, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now talked about it again.

Asked by someone on Twitter if there was any hope for Blue Dragon 2, Spencer said he's more focused right now on getting the Xbox 360 game playable on Xbox One.

"Right now more focused on getting BD1 to XB1 owners," he said. "I'd never say never, but not working on BD2 now."

In August, Spencer revealed that Blue Dragon was coming to the Xbox One backwards compatibility program is something of a funny fashion. Asked straight up if the game was coming to Xbox One, Spencer said, "I'm not allowed to say but yes."

Blue Dragon, which was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker (read our review here), shipped on Xbox 360 across three discs. In May, Microsoft introduced support for multi-disc backwards compatibility titles, beginning with Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut.

There are now more than 250 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. You can see a list of all of them right here.

Blue Dragon was an awesome, fun game, despite the mediocre reviews it received and the lack of love I see many giving it here. I'd definitely be interested in a sequel.

I don't really care for Sakaguchi or his games since Final Fantasy IX. Lost Odyssey was an underwhelming experience which I don't get the praise (but I've played through it twice in case there was something special I was missing - which I wasn't) and as for Blue Dragon... Well, I got bored by the demo back in the day and my brother couldn't endure to go beyond the end of the first disk; considering we have similar tastes (heck, we grew up playing JRPGs together), I can safely take his word for it. I own The Last Story, but couldn't find any urge to play it (considering we had Xenoblade Chronicles to compete with it). In the end of the day, I think Sakaguchi's shine has come and gone, as he remains as an old-school but overhyped game developer.

If only people paid more attention to Tetsuya Takahashi works (including the fantastic - although problematic - Xenosaga series), probably the genre wouldn't be as stale as it is now.

@edhc44: its just backwards compability anyway. no need to look for sakaguchi when we have SMT and Persona dev, atlus other series, the guys at square who still try at making great jrpg (bravely default, setsuna) and others for modern jrpg.

@sakaixx: I have given a go with the remakes of Persona 1 on 2 for the PSP, but couldn't get into it. Maybe it opens up to something else later on, but the lack of an overall map to explore and the structure "go to point A -> talk to someone -> dungeon crawling -> now go to point B -> talk to someone else -> dungeon crawling" couldn't keep my attention for too long. Considering what I've seen of Persona 3, I highly doubt it changes though. It feels too constricted. I've heard good things about other SMT subseries such as Devil Summoner, but in this day and age, I probably should just wrap up Xenoblade Chronicles X and wait for what comes out of Final Fantasy XV.

BTW, if you've played Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, I'd appreciate your two cents.

Edit: Right now I'm also playing Robotrek for the SNES. Those were the days...

MS needs a new start, new connections to japanese devs and better support for current ones.

Its a shame how D4 got so little love from MS,especially when it was about a game which was more fun using the Kinect.

I would love to continue the search for D.

@sladakrobot: I'm really really hoping they bring back D4... I mean honestly, MS should just outright buy out the IP just to show "good faith" towards them wanting to establish new franchises this gen.

I still don't think they whole "Ryse: Son of Rome" ownership thing was ever publicly resolved, which worries me since Crytek is no longer a thing.

@sakaixx: Not true, they are more discerning so the standard JRPG design from the 90's that many companies are still clinging to will naturally not fly on Xbox consoles.

@dlCHIEF58: more like does not fly to xbox target audience. PS users accepts jrpg as its selling point but xbox just dont have the audience.

@sakaixx: I wonder why....hmmm...so confusing.....is it fair to say XB is toxic for jRPG's or might it be "more" accurate to say the Japanese "tend" to favor Japanese products??....not in a racist way of course...no, not that....but if your core demographic is "slightly" xenophobic, it might be good business sense to put your product on a platform they are not prejudice against...I mean "prefer"..of course, prefer.

@Daelusca: apple, coca cola, microsoft windows, mcdonalds all says nope. Gotta admit xenophobic does has its part but the bigger issue is xbox just have no appeal in japanese market due differences in target audience. Not to mention western players never supported japanese game as much as on sony platform.

Tho I do admit the japanese are very close minded to accept things foreign.

@sakaixx: sigh...you named industry leaders that the Japanese have no national alternatives to...similar to their love of Hollywood. Japanese society has changed little in the past 100 years ans is extremely xenophobic.....which the demographic/ declining population should make clear.

As to "xbox just having no appeal in japanese game as much as sony platform".....shake your head.....the platform itself is a piece of hardware which has no "appeal" in and of itself....that is similar to the car argument which said American brands sold horribly because they didn't understand the Japanese market.....hey, whatever you want to call prejudice...feel free.

@Daelusca: But the Japanese love ipads and iphone... are they not products designed in the US? Also xb360 got some sweet exclusive shmups back in the day, even though it was never popular in Japan. I guess only true hardcore gamers were buying XB360 there, everyone else was playing pokemon on the way to work/school or an steins gate game.

The only exclusive Japanese game worth having so far on XBone is Raiden V, and if you are only interested in physical copies Stranger from sword city. I wish Hironobu Sakaguchi would make another JRPG for XB but I believe he is now only making mobile games. Sad indeed.

@darkouer: And how many decent tablets or phones are made/designed in Japan? Not many (if any), they are pretty much dominated by US and Korean companies...and the Japanese like America more than Korea.

@freeryu: I never got to play it, but remember enjoying the bit of the anime I did watch.

Been meaning to expand on my library a bit more genre-wise, with JRPG's being probably my no. 1 least owned game genre.

I'll accept a Blue Dragon sequel under two conditions:

1. Don't make it super-super easy like the first one was.

2. Get rid of Marumaro. Better yet, eliminate that entire species.
