Xbox Boss Talks Scorpio, Cross-Play With PS4

In a new interview with MCV, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg sheds some new light on two of the more exciting and interesting gaming announcements in recent months: Xbox Scorpio and cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

On the subject of Scorpio, which was announced at E3, Greenberg was asked if the console's reveal has impacted Xbox One S sales. The thinking is that if people know a more powerful console is coming, they might hold out. In fact, GameStop recently said the announcement of Scorpio and Sony's Neo negatively impacted console sales. Greenberg didn't exactly give an answer to this question, however, instead saying Microsoft's focus will be on being "very, very aggressive" when it comes to marketing the Xbox One S.

Microsoft will be "really focused on delivering on value with bundles and what you get for the price," he said.

Earlier this month, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the Scorpio reveal did not "overshadow" Xbox One S. Some people believed Microsoft's announcement of Scorpio might impact Xbox S sales, but apparently that hasn't been the case. The Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the US during July (before the Xbox One S was released) and Microsoft is optimistic about how many consoles it can sell in August.

In the MCV interview, Greenberg again referred to Scorpio as the "most powerful console ever created," featuring a six-teraflop GPU. He also said the system represents the "next big leap forward in innovation for gaming" and something that has never been done before on console. What he's likely referring to is how Microsoft is, for the first time on console, treating Xbox as a family of devices.

The games and accessories you own for Xbox One or Xbox One S will work on Scorpio. For previous console transitions, like Xbox 360 to Xbox One, the games and controllers you had for the older machine were rendered basically useless on the new console. However, backwards compatibility support on Xbox One helped with some of this. Scorpio goes even further and "wipes out" the idea of a console generation and eases the "disruptive" nature of moving to a new platform, according to Microsoft.

"We announced [Scorpio] early at E3 so that we can start working with developers and partners who we know will want to take advantage of that incredible amount of power and have a good year plus to be able to plan for it," Greenberg said.

Scorpio is slated to go on sale in holiday 2017, though pricing has not been announced. For its part, Sony is working on a souped-up PS4, codenamed Neo, which could be officially revealed in September.

Also in the MCV interview, Greenberg was asked for a status update on when, if ever, there might be cross-play support between Xbox One and PS4. As has been the case for months, the ball remains in Sony's court, it seems. One of the first games that could support Xbox One-PS4 cross-play is Rocket League. Developer Psyonix has a technical solution for this, but it's still a matter of politics.

"In terms of connecting with gamers on the PlayStation Network, we fully support them to do that. And I believe they're talking to Sony about it, but I don't know the latest," Greenberg said.

Speaking generally about cross-play, Greenberg said for a game like Rocket League, it "makes sense to allow players on other platforms to compete in the same arenas. We think that is good gamers."

"Our strategy is to put gamers at the center of everything we do, and that has led us to support things like that where a developer wants to connect people on Steam, for example," he added. "They're doing that today."

Everything Aaron Greenberg says is laughable PR hogwash. Microsoft is new to crossplay. Sony isn't. In fact just three years ago Phil Spencer was downplaying cross play stating it was bad for gamers. Then Microsoft thought they could fool everyone into thinking they were offering cross play with Windows 10 when they were really only trying to restrict PC gamers and Xbox gamers to Xbox Live. Gamespot were fine with it.

Now Microsoft backpedaled because they're losing just like they did with DRM and Kinect. They're acting like crossplay is good for gamers and trying to make Sony look like the bad guy by saying it's in Sony's court when Sony has already been doing crossplay with PC. Microsoft still hasn't let FF14 on Xbone yet. I hope they deny Xbox crossplay. Cross play with Xbox doesn't benefit anyone but Microsoft. Let Xbox rot at the bottom of the sales charts and let these dumb MS fanboys get what they deserve. They didn't want crossplay before so they shall not have it.

And the reason why Xbone S is selling in the US is because fanboys who already own an Xbone are buying it up. 37% of the Xbone S sales came from Xbone trade ins. You're not really expanding your install base. That is why PS4 games remain at the top of the sales charts.

The Xbone S is a joke and if you bought it you were suckered. It barely has any exclusives. It's weaker than a PS4 but it isn't even as slim as a fat PS4 much less a PS4 slim. Contrary to Phil Spencer's lies at E3 about "No one being left behind when Scorpio launches", Aaron Greenberg accidentally let it slip that Scorpio will have exclusives. Hows it feel to screw over all the idiots who bought the Xbone while lying to them Microsoft?

Microsoft announced Scorpio two years early because they're scared to lose their fanboys when the PS4 slim, PSVR, and Neo launch. Now Microsoft fanboys have to wait two years for Microsoft to copy Sony's VR push. They have to wait two years for Scorpio, a console nobody knows anything about, and even Microsoft doesn't know much about. Xbox is laughable I tell you. LOOOOL

If the ps4 really was that great then you would spend your time playing it instead of obsessing about xbox. Stop trying to convince others that ps4 is better, deep down you know that if it was you wouldn't have to convince others as an effort to convince yourself. They are both basically the same. It's like saying that sprite is better than Sierra mist. Yeah it is but come on they are both the same. Trying to win that argument is a waste of breath.

@xboticon: No life, lol. The PS4 Slim is a joke because why would you make another PS4 while you have the most console sales. You just talk without reasoning, which is pretty "laughable." You know Scorpio will be the better machine, you're too much of a fanboy to realize. And Microsoft announced a slim first, dumbass, LOL

Still like PS4 if you think I'm a fanboy. Uncharted is fun as hell and so is Quantum Break.

@blitzking: You do understand that AMD offered new fab processes to both MS and Sony, and it would have been prohibitively expensive to continue with the same 28nm manufacturing.

Hence the One S, and PS4 slim.

And you're the dummy for comparing the two. They couldn't be any different in terms of the role they play in their respective ecosystems.

One S, besides simply being a superior Xbox One replacement, helps Microsoft to ride out the long, long 16 month journey until Scorpio and provides future-proofed UHD Blu-ray/4K media features to bridge the gap. It also helps sustain buzz for the brand during the period.

The PS4 slim is purely an inexpensive vanilla replacement, a traditional slim console to take care of the low end, pull in late comers to PS4, and to provide a lower cost unit for PSVR bundling.

Meanwhile, the Neo takes care of the high end, becoming the new 'premium' PS4 for power users seeking significant improvements to image quality and performance and for audio-video aficionados wanting UHD Blu-ray/4K media support.

Considering the close proximity between PS4 slim and PS4K release, there would be absolutely no reason to boost the specs of the slim. It would increase its cost for no reason and undermine the message of the PS4K.

They take care of both ends of the spectrum simultaneously, without abandoning anyone's existing or future library.

The Xbox ecosystem will become much the same way come Xmas 2017.

@runstalker: No, I didn't say, I asked, (but you didn't catch the sarcasm). I know what they are and it'd be better to compare them because they both are "SLIM." Yet, the One S offers more under the hood. People compare the One S to Neo sometimes because of it's HDR upscaling and 4K video streaming. So it's better to compare both slims because you're going to hear this from more than me on other websites comparing the two. You may just be too butthurt, idk.

@blitzking: PS4 slim is cheaper to make and offers the same performance as a 3 year old ps4. Makes sense to me.

Avatar image for blitzking
BlitzKing

@joshrmeyer: Probably to you, but what about the ones who are new to it? Sentimental value and money is what keeps your old PS4. Why would you need one? Is it like Xbox One S and completely hybrid?

Fill me in here.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@blitzking: Huh? I'm all for sentimental value. I've only ever sold my vita since the original nintendo. Every console comes to an end, just like the original xbox one will soon no longer be in production. If you're getting a console for sentimental value, you've had 3 years to get one, plus probably another 6 months or so... or a used one.

And that article says exactly what I'm saying... cheaper to make, means cheaper for consumers, and still 1.84tflops.

Avatar image for blitzking
BlitzKing

@joshrmeyer: So you're saying is PS4 is coming to an end? I know it's not but what's the point of owning both if they offer the same?

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@blitzking: If you look at the leaked photos of the "slim", the box just says ps4. Doesn't say ps4 slim. So I'm guessing that the "slim" is the ps4 moving forward. So there'll be the slim model that is just called ps4, and the neo model. Same goes for the original xbox one... except their "slim" model is advertised as such, with new features.

No point in owning both if you already have a ps4... get the neo if you want the upgraded visuals and fps.

Avatar image for runstalker
runstalker

@joshrmeyer: That's exactly it. We're the ones applying the "slim" nickname to the new, smaller, cheaper to manufacture PS4 coming in September. But it's just the usual progression curve for Sony; the usual slimmed update. The replacement unit going forward.

The Xbox One S is highly uncharacteristic as far as traditional 'slim' updates go. Where normally we'd just see a form factor update, smaller/more efficient process for the chips, maybe some minor changes to outputs, the XB1 S instead opted for a number of feature updates, new disc reader, etc. Because Microsoft had more at stake, riding out a long period between hardware.

For people to start using the One S as some kind of 'standard' in slim refreshes makes no sense. It's hardly a typical slim update at all, is it? The PS4 'slim' is more in line with a traditional cheaper, smaller, but otherwise identical vanilla slimming.

Just because it's trendy to label them both as 'Slim' doesn't mean they were both built to fulfill the same role in their respective ecosystems. Far from it.

@sladakrobot: they did have a couple 360/pc games and they killed those off around 2009 because PC players were "destroying console players every single time". On the other hand they were never open to PlayStation/Xbox crossplay until this year.

Avatar image for runstalker

@sladakrobotThat's probably not the best example to dig up from the past. Better to stay in the present if you wish to soldier on.

The Windows Vista-exclusive GFWL/Xbox Live cross-play efforts with Xbox 360 were a spectacular failure.

Trust me, I was around for it. I was really into it. I defended it and promoted it. They completely dropped the ball. That's a dark period in MS history that should never be highlighted as some form of achievement.

:

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@runstalker: And why was it a failure?
Coz the games was First Person Shooter...as far i remember the most prominent game was Shadowrun.
Of course PC gamers with M&K had an advatage over gamepad players and the project failed.
Think about what happens now with crossplay:
GoW4 will be crossplay but not in multiplayer...X1 and PC gamers can play coop, not pvp.
Forza Horizon 3 will have less problems but in generall, there arent many genres where PC and console gamers can play competitive games in real time.

Your default gamepad is the best right, oh, you can get other gamepads that are better? So the playing field isn't the same even then? No... the playing field is the same when all players are able to use all options (or NO options, but fat chance msft would be able to drm lock the controllers also.....).

@sladakrobot: @sladakrobot: But why defend the failure of GFWL and/or Vista+360 cross-play? We're talking about the effing PLATFORM HOLDERS of the Windows operating system. Don't you think, of any party, they are the ones that should have comprehensively seen those pitfalls ahead of time?

Of course.

It's like the dubious mistakes MS made with the early UWP Windows 10 games. Why do you think people come down hard on them for those missteps? They own the frickin' OS. Is there anyone that should be more aware of what PC players expect in a PC game client?

Not to mention, after the errors of GFWL, people found it absolutely baffling that MS would make such half-baked decisions.

Thankfully they seem to be correcting those blunders in the last UWP releases, and the partnership with Nordic Games for Steam versions is a good sign they're opening up again.

Avatar image for deactivated-584608341d412

@runstalker: It may be a failure. However it is far better to have tried and failed, than never tried at all. Something which a lot of the Sony fan base are perpetuating MS - never trying. As @ sladakrobot stated. Just how many games are really cross play PS-PC. From the offset; not many from the looks of it.
