Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Joins Microsoft's Senior Leadership Team

The move is a "great show of commitment" by Microsoft about gaming, Spencer says.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer is joining Microsoft's top team of advisers. According to GameSpot sister site ZDNet, Spencer--who is currently executive vice president of gaming for Microsoft--is joining Microsoft's Senior Leadership Team. He's the 16th member, including CEO Satya Nadella, CFO Terry Myerson, and AI executive Harry Shum.

Spencer's promotion to the Senior Leadership Team is reflected on the Microsoft's website. His appointment suggests gaming is not going anywhere at Microsoft; there was a time when people believed Microsoft might spin off its Xbox division. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

For his part, Spencer thanked fans for their support, and said himself that his promotion the Senior Leadership Team is a "great show of commitment" by Microsoft overall to the gaming market. Microsoft's gaming division, called More Personal Computing, saw its operating income rise 34 percent, or $2.1 billion, for the latest reporting period.

Spencer was promoted to Head of Xbox in August 2015. He oversees the Xbox and Xbox Live, as well as the creative teams at Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Microsoft Studios. Spencer has been with Microsoft for more than 25 years.

Spencer is known for his frank and candid remarks about industry topics. For example, he consistently talks about how console wars are counter-productive.

Congratulations on a job well done!

I've probably said this before but MS should change Phil Spencer's job title to Xboss, Xbox boss sounds like a tongue twister.

Well-deserved... Compare his actions (actual platform improvements, not just words) to Mattrick's running trainwreckbortionfail before him. BillG's original vision (demands) for the platform were realized by Phil and Co: Living room PCs running Windows and DirectX, playing games w/other WinPCs. Not to forget incredible developer support, which (again) goes back to how things used to be.

Let's hope he retains that current job for some time.

I like Phil, he seems like a sound, down to Earth guy who just likes gaming. He's certainly more fan-friendly than Andrew House at Sony, not that I want to flame-bait, I just don't really have another opposite number to compare him to.

He should have been in charge when the Xbox One launched. Maybe this gen's "console war" would have been closer, instead of the slaughter that it initially was. Spencer has done a lot to turn things around.

Joining the Senior Leadership Team has many benefits like sitting in 4 hour meetings looking at pie charts, attending Metallica concerts, and coming up with product ideas that the general public doesn't really care about.

He definitely deserves it.

Phil Spencer should be in charge of every XBOX console release from here on out...

Bring back Fable Legends.

@freeryu: Clearly you didn't play it. [correction, you did?] The only thing that was fun was the Fable art style.

In-your-face FSP/P2W at every turn.

[edit/add] just saw your comment below. Now I'm curious what exactly you found "fun & worth finishing" about it. Novelty wore off fast for me, and the meat was bare-bones. That's coming from a F1-3 fan. Yes, even 3.

@Pyrosa:

The remarks between characters, the goofy art style, and the demon doors. Any game with coop I will be a bit biased towards just because I love 4 player coop with all different characters.

The talent system was pretty basic but the gameplay was very fun imo, Evienne was one of the best characters.

@sladakrobot: Least give us Fable Legends for now. I got into the Alpha like 3 weeks before it was canceled. Been wanting to play a fun quirky game ever since.

@freeryu: tried Neverwinter?

@sladakrobot: Yep, it was garbage. Same with ESO, that game was a letdown.

@freeryu: a shame you dont like it. But i guess you didnt played it so far to lvl up a character to its max lv(70)? I played Neverwinter but stopped and got back when there was a period of 4 days with 2xExp. I brought 2 of my characters to lv 70 and joined a guild...a high lv guild brings you mighty benefits of power,crit or penetration stats. Also with lv 70 ,there is where the badass gears drop

@sladakrobot: Nah I never got that far.

@sladakrobot: That and/or ESO. Both vastly superior to FL.

Good for him, he deserves it, Xbox was going downhill fast because of that jackass Mattrick.

@chiefwiggum16: Very Awesome job with the Xbox Division the last couple years Phil, keep focusing on First Party Exclusives and u'll be all set.

I feel better about xbox with phil in charge. Gaming needs manchildren running things and not soulless corporate executives that only listen to sports radio and have their bonuses already planned out.

Spencer saved the Xbox brand. He deserves all the promotions and bonuses they can throw his way. Just make sure he spends most of his time still working on making Xbox better and better.

Xbox will die with out Phil Spencer, Xbox 360 was a closed eccosystem that didn't need alot of attention, xbone needed a visionary that it did not have.

Pretty strange how phills climbing the ladder now.

@lorddaggeroff: he just joined the council, an additional perk, he still be head of Xbox. He just have more clout now.
