Xbox Boss "Confident" Halo 5 Will Have Smooth Launch

The Master Chief Collection issues "hit them in the heart," Phil Spencer says about the team at 343.

The release of Xbox One's Halo: The Master Chief Collection last fall did not go well. It suffered from widespread connection issues that caused headaches for many players. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken out to say he is "confident" that Halo 5: Guardians won't suffer the same fate. As part of a wide-ranging interview, Spencer also admits that the issues with The Master Chief Collection were tough to take for the team at 343 Industries.

"I know that of all of our teams, no team at their core feels the need to hit a great launch from a multiplayer and connection issues more than 343," he explained. "That team took the issues around the launch of Master Chief Collection, it kind of hit them in the heart, because it's Halo Nation. It's the people who love these past Halo games."

With Halo 5, however, Spencer said every time he visits the team at 343, the first thing they want to talk about is how the game's online functionality is coming together.

"No team is focused on it more than 343," he said. "The planning and process teams have gone through has been great, and I'm confident in how it will launch based on the results that we're seeing."

Of course, with online games, some issues will always happen. But Spencer went on to say that Microsoft's various internal teams have learned from The Master Chief Collection's problems and the company's entire portfolio should benefit as a result.

"Frankly, if I look at how Rare came out [with Rare Replay] and Gears [Ultimate Edition] came out, and now Forza, I feel good that the teams all up have taken the lessons of last holiday of some teams missing the bar that they wanted to hit," Spencer said. "You're always going to have issues here and there, and you kind of manage through it, but by-and-large, those releases have gone well. It's really nice to see that the teams have taken an increased focus on making sure that launch goes extremely well for our customers."

Also in our interview, Spencer says he expects Halo will still be around in 2035, enjoying a long lifespan not unlike Star Wars and Spider-Man. Read the entire interview here.

Because shooters always have a smooth launch. Oh wait, they never do. And Microsoft's last Halo game didn't either.

Spare us the lies.

@Thanatos2k: Because they couldn't possibly have learned anything from MCC's rocky launch right?

Go back to the basement xD

@Bezee4u: They learned from Halo 4. That game had a smooth launch, and it wasnt 4 games cobbled together into a unified UI. Netcoding nightmare.

I didn't have one Hiccup in the 5 beta, and I played for hours at a time. If anything the MCC disaster was a good lesson to humble them.

I'm sure MS and 343 has learned from MCC to ensure that such a disaster doesn't happen again, and with how dedicated they are to the online functionality, I can say with confidence too that Halo 5 will have a great launch.

If by confident he means the same confidence he had when Halo Master Chief collection released, then he better start making some prayers.

One day, people will learn that no matter how confident you are, 'the Titanic is unsinkable' type comments aren't worth what little PR gain it might momentarily buy you. This will be the first stone someone throws back when the now practically inevitable happens.

Hehe, more like hit them in the pocketbook. I'm sure after the amazing F up of MCC they will move mountains to make sure something like that doesn't happen again. Doesn't mean it won't. Just that they will try damn hard not to. Besides, integrating 4 games, different engines and online aspects into one disc and UI is a lot harder than making one game run smoothly.

Avatar image for Pokemon18986

@bdrtfm: 5 million units of MCC sold. Doesnt look like it hurt the pocketbook too much. But it does look like they realized how important player retention is. And therefore, it affected them much better than a pocketbook hurt would have.

@Pokemon18986: Where did you get that sales figure?

Avatar image for Pokemon18986
Pokemon18986

@crusadernights: In October of 2014, the Halo series had 60 million units sold (Roughly). In July, the Halo series had 65 million units sold. Account for the next two months of selling time, and now account for Halo 4 getting some continual sales on 360, and youll find that MCC sold about 5 million units

For your sakes Phil, it better be. I pre-order the Limited edition digital I'm going all out. But however, after playing the Beta, it should be a smooth launch. [At least I hope so]

i have faith in 343i & Microsoft cuz unlike other devs/pubslishers these guys learn from their mistake(s) but others they learn from their mistake(s) too but it takes years for them to realise & admit "we messed up". remember ea/ubisoft/activision & their online pass garbage? how long did it take for them to realise that the online pass was a waste of time & money? i mean yeah the online passes are $10 but cmon say a family with a tight budget bought a preowned game for $40 they popped the game in & in order to play online they have to cough up another $10 so thats $50 they spend on that preowned game but if ur lucky u mightve gotten an online pass for $5 on ebay but still at least in the end they admit they messed up & are now redeeming themselves from their past mistakes so dont judge microsoft they are different than other pubs

I imagine Halo 5 won't have the problems MCC had. Making an online multiplayer game that consists of 5 games that were originally designed for 3 different platforms just sounds like a programming and logistics nightmare.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a1d4b615a3a3

The beta for Halo 5 ran flawlessly with over a million people trying it and the game itself doesn't share the matchmaking complexities of MCC's multi game approach. I'm sure it will work with little to no interruptions.

@flyincloud1116: If you havent played the series, then MCC will be one of the best value packages on the market. Everything plays well and holds up to todays standards thanks to the remastering and the 60 FPS. Its one of the few FPS franchises I know with a good, well thought out story. And the multiplayer aspect of the game is great too. I think, even at full price, its a great package for a newcomer to the series. Im a long time fan, and I bought just for the thrill of playing the old campaigns in Full HD.

@flyincloud1116: It's good now that everything is fix now. I got it at launch just for the Campaigns, not to play MP so it's been okay for me. Its not bad at all for 4 games and the updates now is well better now then it was at launch.

@Tiger_Ali: It's impossible for anyone to own an Xbox One and not be so madly in love with it that you wouldn't risk making a complete ass of yourself on the internet to proclaim that love. The bond between Xbox and fanatic is stronger than that of mother and child. So clearly, you do not own an xbox.

Avatar image for Tiger_Ali

@bobafetthatesu: No it because of hate for it and my fued with my half brother that I own one. We have been polar opposites and have no one but our mother to blame, seperated and raised in different states and as children forced to game on different consoles. Its funny really before he was born I've had Nintendo and alot of older systems , but as soon as he was old enough to game thats when it started, me being a lil older I was the one with a Genesis....the only one and he would have to share gaming(only when he visited PA from NY) with me until he got his fresh Snes(man was I jealous) getting greats like Mario and all the better looking games(Sega vs Nintendo on SF, MK, Nba Jam, Maximum Carnage etc.) This sh^t takes me back. After that stage(which he won) we moved on to the 32 bit era Saturn(Console mom bought me) vs Playstation(Console mom bought him) with this being a lil different cuz we were huge pokemon fans so mom got us both a N64(wipes tear for goldeneye64).

Back then it was just a matter of preference on which RPG(no such thing as a jrpg back then) or fighter you wanted to play on your console back then and I've always been a huge fan of the fighting genre so saturn was the place to play back then. The next Gen the Rivalry was still mild and as growing teens we would begin to realize how spoiled we were. I got my PS2 and he got his Xbox(We both thought Dreamcast was a joke). We would bring the consoles over with each otherwhen ever we visited and for the most part have a blast on both. I remember Project gotham racing and using the xbox's ill a$$ in game music feature(super sweet) to ride to sweet music and we beat Halo together for the 1st time(of course as I was riding off in the vehicle I kinda left him behind(Co-op)(miss that split screen feature in Halo 5 already). Ps2 had the better game soverall back then though.(socom 1 and 2 online anyone, 1st time I used a headset fro console gaming)

And then the last time mom ever bought us consoles was last gen. Of course she got him an xbox 360 and me the 3. This is when I started to see a shift in where gamers went to game. Not to mention conversations about resolution and frame rates were hot topics with multiplats being better on the 360 than the ps3(skyrim) not to mention being a gamer on a sony console would get as much greif as it would to day for just gaming on the bone. Teased about resolution and graphics laughed at when I asked when new dlc for call of duty would be on ps3. Plus really having no one to play with(psn was just a barren wasteland compared to what it is today). But we've no matter what always played football middle school, high schoool, games like madden and 2k. But his stubborness has reached a new plateau and he refuses to get the 4 so to play him in madden I had to get an xbone and with that I have the wii u, 4 and bone and 3ds.

So the morale of this story is too hate EA. Hate them, dispise them, protest them, eliminate them... for if not for the shady lock down of the NFL license for video games, we would have more choices and NFL2k would exist. Madden has become the crack in my life and my whole family(gamers within it) is addicted. Regardless though I own all the consoles and will critique them as I see fit.

well see. I learned my lesson after Halo 4. MCC I actually waited to get plus, the way that they did the multiplayer was a bad idea. In the end, the reason why I got the MCC collection was because of the beta for Halo 5.
