X-Men Spin-off The New Mutants: Star Is "Frustrated" By Delay

There were originally three movies from the X-Men universe set for release in 2018: Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and The New Mutants. But in January it was announced that the release of the latter was moving back nearly a year to February 2019, and subsequent reports have revealed that a series of reshoots are taking place. Now star Anya Taylor-Joy has spoken about the delay to the movie's release.

In an interview with The Playlist, Taylor-Joy expressed her displeasure with the The New Mutants' delayed release. "The only thing that I could say, without being in trouble, is that it being delayed is disappointing, frustrating in fact, because we were all very excited for it to be released on April 13," she said. "I don't mean just disappointing for me, but I'm sure there are a lot of other fans that were looking forward to seeing it."

Nevertheless, Taylor-Joy went on to state that the reshoots would improve the movie, which has been described as a "horror movie" set within the X-Men universe, and confirmed the recent rumor that they would involve the introduction of a new character. "I do think that there is a great responsibility to make sure the movie is done right and that we deliver the fans something that they can all feel happy about and excited about," she said. "So, I don't think it being delayed is a bad thing because it's definitely more important to make sure that we get it right than rushing to make a date. So, hopefully, all of these reshoots and adding of the new character that will give the fans an altogether satisfactory, wonderful product."

The New Mutants also stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), and Alice Braga (Elysium). It's directed by Josh Boone, who previously helmed the hit teen drama The Fault in Our Stars. The first teaser was released in October.

Boone previously revealed that the movie could kick-start a trilogy of scary X-Men movies. "We brought it to Fox as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by [Marvel writer Bill] Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the '80s," he told Collider. "These are all going to be horror movies, and they're all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the 'rubber-reality' supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie.

"Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics."
