X-Men Legends is the upcoming action RPG from Activision. The game is being developed by veteran studio Raven Software, which has made quite a name for itself over the years thanks to some nicely crafted first-person shooters on the PC and some promising conversions of their work to the Xbox. X-Men Legends marks a number of firsts for the respected developer because the game is its first proper foray into the RPG genre, and it's also the developer's first multiplatform release. Furthermore, the game also represents the first time that Marvel's Ultimate X-Men have appeared in a video game.

For those unfamiliar with Marvel's mutant phenomenon, the X-Men are a group of men and women who are the next step in human evolution. They possess varied superpowers and use them to protect humanity, despite the fact that they're feared and even hated by most nonmutant humans. The rich premise has helped the books that feature the team to become a comics juggernaut. As a result, the books have spanned decades and have spawned a variety of offshoot media--from comics, cartoons, and games, to motion pictures. Over the years, Marvel Comics has told different tales, which have all put new spins on the team. The latest such endeavor is the four-year-old "Ultimate X-Men" books that offer a new contemporary take on the popular X-Men mythos. Of course, these books quickly became hits.

Given the books' popularities, the Ultimate X-Men cast and world is being used as the core for X-Men Legends. The game's story will focus on the team's attempt to stop Magneto from imprisoning the human race and will feature a roster of 15 characters from the books--including Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey--that you'll use to create a four-man team. You'll have to pick your team wisely, as each character's abilities will factor directly into how you'll progress through individual levels. Some characters will even be able to perform multiple-character moves, such as Wolverine and Colossus' fastball special. The game's RPG mechanics let you use experience points, which the characters earn over the course of the game, to upgrade the entire team or just individual characters. Moreover, you have the option to unlock additional mutant abilities by using your experience points. The familiar roster of heroes is matched by a comparable sampling of villains, which includes Magneto, The Brotherhood of Mutants, and the deadly mutant-hunting robots, the Sentinels.

Over the next several months, we'll be presenting encyclopedic entries on X-Men Legends' cast and locations that will bring you up to speed on who's who in the game, in addition to what powers each team member possesses. The entries will be supplemented by exclusive assets that will help you see the people and places in the game as well.

They are the Tomorrow People--Homo superior. Through evolution, they have developed powers and abilities far beyond the faculties of normal humans. Led by Professor Charles Xavier (aka "Professor X"), the X-Men are mutant teens trained to use their genetic gifts to protect a world--that fears and hates them--from those mutants and otherwise who would use their powers for evil. The X-Men mission is basically a ceaseless crusade to prevent all-out war between mutants and humans.

Real Name: Logan (whether this is his last or first name is unknown)
Occupation: Student, adventurer; former assassin
Group Affiliation: X-Men, formerly the Brotherhood of Mutants
Base of Operations: Xavier Institute for Gifted Children, Salem Center, Westchester County, New York; formerly the Savage Land
First Appearance: Ultimate X-Men #1 (2000)

History: Little is known about Wolverine or his past, save that he is the best there is at what he does. And what he does is kill. A product of the mysterious Weapon X project, Logan is a trained assassin.

Somehow, Logan/Wolverine's skeletal structure and mutant bone-claws were laced with the unbreakable metal known as adamantium, thus forging him into an unstoppable killing machine. This also made him a valued soldier in Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants, who were a group of terrorists operating under the assumption that Homo superior represents the next step in human evolution. They further believed that Homo sapiens should live under mutant rule.

Dispatched by the "Master of Magnetism" to assassinate Professor Charles Xavier, Wolverine defected to the X-Men--swayed in part by his feelings for Jean Grey, the teenage telepath known as Marvel Girl. He now fights alongside Xavier's young charges to protect a world that hates and fears his kind.

Height: 6'1"
Weight: 195 lbs.
Eye Color: Black

Powers: Wolverine is blessed with animal-keen senses. Most notably, his hyperacute sense of smell enables him to track people and objects by scent. An accelerated healing factor, based on Wolverine's physiology, allows him to survive wounds that would prove fatal to most humans and mutants.

Weapons: Logan possesses adamantium-laced, retractable claws that are housed in his forearms. At will, he can release them through his skin between the knuckles of each hand.

Because she could not fully control her powers, Ororo almost electrocuted a playground full of students. The police used force to subdue her.

The young telepath known as Marvel Girl easily entered the Athens police lockup by causing the guard to believe that she was an FBI agent dispatched to retrieve Ororo. In reality, Xavier had sent Jean to bring Ororo to his Institute for Gifted Children. There, he had begun assembling a team of "X-Men" to help him stop the coming war between humans and mutants. Previously, Ororo had refused a similar offer to join the terrorist Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants.

Jean's telepathic and telekinetic abilities make her a formidable addition to the X-Men's lineup.

History: Jean Grey was an average teenager until her telekinetic and telepathic abilities manifested themselves. Now, thoughts are louder to her than voices, and she can lift weights with her mind.

After Professor Charles Xavier discovered Jean's abilities, he approached her with a proposition: attend his Institute for Gifted Children in Westchester County, New York, to learn to control her abilities--and help him stop the coming war between humans and mutants.

Jean was the second student the professor enrolled in his school, after Scott Summers. Because Scott and Jean have been at the institute the longest, they have greater experience with their powers and more training than the other X-Men.

Colossus serves as the muscle of the X-Men.

History: In light of Russia's struggles to build a democratic political system and a market economy to replace the strict social, political, and economic controls of the communist period, Piotr Rasputin left his poverty-stricken family to make a living in the United States. Already aware of his incredible powers and unable to find adequate work to support his family, Piotr joined the Russian Mafia. Downplaying his abilities, he quickly rose within the Mafia ranks to become an enforcer. Since he cared more about his family than himself, Piotr sent home every cent he earned.

Due to his trusted position, Piotr was often charged with the overseeing of secret arms deals. One such transaction threw his life into a tailspin when he and his associates were double-crossed and attacked. All the men were killed save Piotr, who used his mutant power to become an impenetrable being of organic steel. His secret now exposed, Piotr was inclined to wait for the Sentinels to arrive to annihilate him. Instead, he was discovered by Professor Charles Xavier and asked to join the X-Men, a team of young mutants dedicated to bringing about peaceful coexistence between the two species of man. As Colossus, Piotr now serves as the squad's superstrong powerhouse.

Powers: Piotr Rasputin is a mutant with the ability to convert his body into an organic steel-like substance, granting him superhuman strength and a high degree of resistance to injury. It is believed that because Piotr is still a teenager, his strength has not yet reached its peak.

Nightcrawler is an agile and deadly addition to the X-Men's fighting roster.

History: Save for his indigo fur, Kurt Wagner resembles every bit the Western world's idealized notion of the devil: a prehensile tail that ends in a point, fanged teeth, pointed ears, three-fingered hands, and two-toed feet. But looks are deceiving...

Kurt Wagner grew up in Bavaria and spent a good deal of his youth entertaining the masses as a circus acrobat. Wagner had been captured by the Weapon X facility in India and held there against his will when the X-Men found him. The X-Men did eventually free all of Weapon X's mutant prisoners after shutting the program down. Some time later, when helping Xavier and the X-Men subvert nuclear disaster at the hands of Magneto, Kurt joined the ranks of the X-Men.

Powers: Aside from his superhuman agility, Nightcrawler has the ability to teleport in any direction in an instant--with one restriction: He must be able to see his destination. He also has the ability to blend into shadows to such a degree that he is nearly invisible to the naked eye.

History: Bobby Drake grew up in the suburbs of New York City. When he was 15 years old, his mutant ability manifested. Terrified of what might happen to his parents if the mutant-hunting Sentinels came for him, Bobby ran away from home.

Assembling a team of young mutants to help him stop the coming war between humans and Homo superior, Professor Charles Xavier located Bobby using the psychic amplifier Cerebro. Confused and frightened by his burgeoning powers, the teenager made his way to New York City's Times Square and hopped on a Greyhound bus. Unfortunately for Bobby, the X-Men weren't the only ones interested in his whereabouts; the Sentinels were closing in, as well.

The android assassins seized the bus Bobby was on, then destroyed it--but not before the Beast had carried him to safety. As a Sentinel beheaded by Cyclops staggered toward a crowd of bystanders, Bobby used his mutant ability to freeze it in place. Impressed by this feat, the Beast dubbed him "Iceman."

Beast's amazing intelligence sharply contrasts with his animal-like appearance.

History: Henry McCoy knows full well the dangers facing mutants in the new millennium. His huge hands and feet are obvious signs of his mutation, too often making him the object of fear and hate. Fleeing an abusive home, Hank made his way to New York in time to witness on television the first culling of mutants in Los Angeles.

Caught in the middle of a barroom brawl, he was asked at gunpoint to vacate the premises. Subsequently, Hank was invited to join Professor Charles Xavier's X-Men--and help to stop the coming war between humans and mutants.

Aside from his slightly derogatory code name, Hank took to the role far quicker than fellow new recruits Colossus and Storm. Bearing a cheerful attitude and genius-level intelligence that contrasts with his brutish appearance, the Beast is a star pupil at the Xavier Institute.

With the aid of a guard she manipulated, she escaped and never looked back.
