X-Men: Dark Phoenix And New Mutants Delayed Due To Massive Reshoots
There's no need to be alarmed... Right?
Strange things are afoot in the X-Men universe. 20th Century Fox has announced that X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants will both be moving their release dates, thanks in large part to major reshoots on both films.
The news was first reported by ComicBook.com, which says Dark Phoenix's reshoot delay is mostly due to scheduling issues. With a cast that includes A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender--not to mention Sophie Turner, who is currently filming the final season of Game of Thrones--it should come as no surprise that gathering the group would be difficult. As such, the movie is sliding into the February 2019 release window that New Mutants was previously going to release in.
New Mutants, on the other hand, has a lot more to reshoot than Dark Phoenix. Collider reports that at least half of the film could be filmed again to make it scarier--which could see at least one new character added to the mix. Fox is reportedly hoping for the movie to have a unique tone that helps it stand out--much like Deadpool and Logan did--but it simply didn't have the scares the studio was expecting.
That said, Collider claims director Josh Boone was happy with the version of the film he turned over to Fox and is in the middle is having some creative differences with the studio, leading to the film being pushed from February to August of 2019.
Of course, the one film not mentioned in all of this is Gambit, the long-suffering offshoot of the X-Men universe that Channing Tatum is supposed to star in. After losing a long list of directors over the past couple of years, it seems as though production of the film is no closer to starting. At least fans still have Deadpool 2 to keep them satiated when it arrived on May 18.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will arrive in theaters on February 14, 2019. New Mutants will follow on August 2, 2019.
