WWE's Xavier Woods Explains How New Day Podcast Will Break Through The Noise

Woods' Michael McDonald impression is very good.

Currently, WWE superstar Xavier Woods is in what he's dubbed his "off-season," as the wrestler has sustained an injury. However, the New Day member and multiple-time WWE Tag Team Champion is staying busy with his work on his gaming channel UpUpDownDown and working on the latest addition to WWE's growing podcast network, The New Day: Feel The Power, which debuts on December 2.

Speaking to GameSpot, Woods discussed how the new project came together and what he's hoping to accomplish with it.. "WWE's got this sweet deal with Endeavor going on so we get a few podcasts going, and we were approached to see if we were interested in doing a podcast," Woods said. "And we definitely were, because obviously we are constantly trying to think of new ways to get content out there, whether it might be a game show or a sitcom, anything. I'm just throwing these ideas out there. If you have money to invest, by all means come through. It's @XavierWoodsPhD, my DMs are open, hit me up."

The New Day, comprised of Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E have proved themselves as a consistently entertaining aspect of WWE programming for years. So putting together these three performers, who have an incredible amount of chemistry, makes perfect sense. The first couple of episodes will focus on the origin of their group, but beyond that, The New Day: Feel The Power will venture out into different territories.

"We'll just kind of be talking about things that are interesting to us," Woods continued. "Current events that are relevant to what we're doing. For me, video games. Kofi is a big shoe head. E is a hip hop guy. We'll hopefully be able to bring in guests and stuff. If I can really get what I want, I'll be able to do an episode where I get to talk to Michael McDonald because that was who I admire. People think I'm kidding. Michael McDonald has the greatest voice of all time, and if there was vocal cord surgery to get my singing voice changed to sound like him, I'd drop every dime I had in order to get it."

It was at this point Woods proceeded to do his impression of McDonald, serenading us with the opening lines of the Doobie Brothers song "What A Fool Believes." It was beautiful, and it may become my phone's ringtone. Personally, I'd love to hear him do "I Keep Forgettin'."

Without a doubt, Woods and the New Day have a following outside of the ring, primarily through Woods' gaming channel UpUpDownDown, so that will help break through the very crowded podcasting market. Additionally, the fact the show is about these entertainers and their interests--outside of wrestling--will surely help garner new listeners.

"It's just going to be a podcast about us and our friendship and things that we want to talk about, things that are funny to us, things that are interesting to us," explained Woods. "And so yeah, like I said, maybe current events, maybe something funny happened on Twitter, and we need to touch on that. But it's going to be less wrestling focused. If people see, 'Oh, WWE has a bunch of podcasts and lots of them are wrestling,' then we've got the one that's a little bit different from those. I think that's going to help us stand out, not just within the WWE podcast group, but just in podcasts in general. So that's what we're hoping for. Fingers crossed that actually happens and things don't just bomb and go terribly for us. So any help you could give us, we'd appreciate it."

The New Day wants their podcast to be more of an evergreen show than anything else, so new listeners can pick up wherever they please, with episodes exploring things they care about, rather than topical shows that are one-and-done listens. The New Day: Feel the Power arrives on December 2 to all download and streaming services including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Pandora. You can get a taste of what the show will be like here.
