WWE Wrestlemania 34 Results: Women's Battle Royal Highlights

Formerly--and briefly--known as the The Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal.

Comments

Wrestlemania 34 was home to not just the usual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but also the first-ever Women's Battle Royal. Although a full lineup of participants wasn't announced far in advance, this has been a notable match in the lead up to Wrestlemania for a different reason. WWE originally intended to call this The Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal, playing on the name of the men's version. However, this quickly prompted complaints--although she was a significant name in women's wrestling, she's faced accusations of pimping out female wrestlers, racism, stealing money, and more. She passed away at the age of 84 in 2007.

In light of the controversy, WWE shifted gears and opted to rename the match without including a direct connection to any one individual. As a result, we had the simply titled Women's Battle Royal. It's one of four Wrestlemania matches featuring winners; there was also the Raw Women's Championship match between Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax, the Smackdown Women's Championship match between Charlotte and Asuka, and the mixed tag match featuring Ronda Rousey (partnered with Kurt Angle) and Stephanie McMahon (with Triple H). Here's how things played out in the Battle Royal.

Now Playing: Wrestlemania: 10 Greatest Matches Ever!

  • Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bayley are the only ones to get personalized entrances. Everyone else comes to the ring as a mob.
  • The women are doing a much better job of choreographing this mess than the men. They're highlighting individual wrestlers by having the women gang up on participants, one at a time. Carmella is the first woman eliminated. Dana Brooke is the second woman eliminated.
  • There is a six-woman NXT contingency that's teaming up against the rest of the roster. Bianca Belair performs a 450 splash, and later uses her massive ponytail as a whip. Kairi Sane performs a beautiful elbow drop during the commercial break (these commercial breaks are horrendous). The NXT women are all eliminated, but they had the best spots of the match. The future looks bright.
  • Sasha Banks and Bayley are the last two participants in the Battle Royal. They shake hands, and Bayley suddenly hurls Sasha over the top rope, stabbing her former best friend in the back.
  • Banks and Bayley, in this brief interaction, had better chemistry than 90% of the women's roster. That they couldn't figure out a way to have them fight, 1-on-1, on the big stage is a crime.
  • But wait! Naomi was never eliminated! Bayley begs the referee to rule in her favor to no avail. Naomi takes out Bayley to win the Battle Royal, and she celebrates in the ring. Feel the Glow!

Wrestlemania was a long, long show, but we have you covered with a list of full results. That included the aforementioned debut by Rousey--which turned out to be surprisingly good!--and copious shots of John Cena sitting in the crowd. You can also get a recap by rewatching on the WWE Network.
