WOW guild banned

'Overrated' reportedly booted by Blizzard after it was caught hacking; "we know we deserve it," said one guild member.

The World of Warcraft guild Overrated has been permanently banned by Blizzard Entertainment after it was caught cheating in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Guild members used an exploit that essentially knocked down walls, according to postings on World of Warcraft-related forums.

The guild had been playing the level of the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, also known as AQ40. In it, the dungeon level map progresses in a circular manner from the first to last bosses. The mod effectively allowed the guild to bypass what it refers to as "C'thun trash," bosses who dropped less lucrative items. Guild members could then move on to the final boss, C'thun, who drops more valuable goodies.

Pantaloons, a member of the Overrated guild, commented on the WOW forums, "Let me explain. We are the only US Horde guild that clears Naxx [the most challenging area of the game], been like that for a few weeks. People found that the pre-C'thun trash was so painful, that they decided to install some stupid thing that deletes walls or something, and you can just run there after Skeram [the first boss]. I know, we had it coming, blah blah whatever, we know we deserve it...I'm sure they'll try and get it rescinded because it's kind of a steep punishment with no recourse or whatever."

Blizzard Entertainment did not respond to requests from GameSpot for a comment.

Smart move. First, they did violate the EULA that they agreed to in order to play the game. Secondly, the more Blizzard can discourage hacks like this, the better. Regular mods should be fine since they get quite a bit of scrutiny, but hacks? How do you know that hack you loaded doesn't have a keylogger or worse? It's both a violation of the EULA and an unsafe computing practice - the less people who do it the better. Oh, and for people who are using hacks - just because you "know better" than to use a hack you don't know anything about, doesn't mean the other 6+ million players out there who are less tech savvy than you do. That guy you saw last week just starting off could end up with his account stolen...

they weren't banned because 'they were lazy' or that they 'snuck by' some boss or somethin, they got banned cuz they used an external application that helped them achieve such, be it 'remove walls' or whatever. The act of using a 3rd party app is breaking the license agreement quite explicitely. THAT is what got them banned.

Hmm. I read that and started to get worried, but then I saw that it was a Horde guild. I agree Marka1700, I am really tired of people cheating in WSG. Blizz needs to fix that, because lately, it seems almost no Alliance players want to play it.

Its not newsworther apoc, not every one in the word plays WOW, and this would only be good for wow players or the people in that guild, as for that how was this considered cheating, they could obviously breeze C'thun stands to reason the lower bosses weren't a problem for em, They just beypassed thos bosses in teh end, they didn;t get free exp or items just bypassed worthless crap. then again i all so say if they can beat C'thun then they could breeze through the lower bosses and not have a problem.

I sympathise with them, the trash before c'thun is especially boring and you get limited rewards from the bosses before c'thun anyway, still the punishment as he says seems rather "steep" but neccessary i guess.

To Pundog: They weren't cheating because it was too hard. They weren't cheating because it was too easy. They were cheating because they were too lazy. Maybe next time they'll weigh the few hours they saved per run versus the hundreds of hours they spent on not only their raiding characters, but all the other characters on their accounts.

News is news, I can't believe people are actually bashing this article for being up. Just as many of us don't care about consoles. Relax, there will be more up within a day or two for fanboys to read. Anyways, this is the first time Blizzard has banned such a concentrated group of players. You never see an entire guild getting banned in all the other reports. As for changing trash encounters... trash is trash. Blizzard has removed a lot of trash from some instances that used to be unreasonably packed full. The expansion will also feature plenty of instances with multiple wings, so when you're done with a wing you don't have to worry about clearing over that distance again if you come back the next day to do more. This guild cheated to farm the final boss in AQ40, and made up sorry excuses for doing it. Serves them right getting banned.

In thier defence, a instance on farm is really annoying, all I need from MC right now is the Nemesis pants, I've been top of the locks for well over a month dkp wise, and the damn things wont drop, every time I enter MC now I hate it, if there was a way to skip all the useless crap in there and jump to Rag (who we get down before the sons come up).... lets just say I would be tempted

Seems like a slow past few days for GameSpot. The biggest news in the last few days for me has been the Guitar Hero information.. Either way, I play WoW, and I could really care less. Glad they got trashed for cheating, though. Serves 'em right for not being patient as others have to be.

To Ghost900: They weren't cheating because it was too hard, they were cheating because it was too easy. Some of those areas can take literally hours to run through (so long that guilds will do them over a couple of days or even a week), and they were cheating because in order to get to the only thing they needed (the loot off the boss) they would have to spend hours going through pointless and easy stuff.

So cheating is justified if the game is too hard, huh? That is the lamest thing I've heard in a long time. If the game is too hard, then get better at it and quit whining. My guild and I take on every instance the whole way through and I've never had more fun than taking on the challenges of WoW. As for cheating because you are "too good" and you just want to get to the end boss to get your "phat" loots, then maybe (just maybe) you should go play something. This guild is sorry alright... sorry that they got caught. What a joke...

"This is considered news!? Honestly, I don't care about some WoW guild that is using hacks. I'd rather know about stuff concerning the PS3 and Wii." It's not like they didn't post PS3 news to post this story. If the news headline doesn't interest you, don't read it. Pretty simple.

well Kolomo... To be considered newsworthy, an event usually must have broad interest in one or more news values * Effect (how many people were, are or will be affected?) * Timeliness (did the event occur very recently?) * Revelation (is there significant new information, previously unknown?) * Proximity (was the event nearby geographically?) Just because you arent one of the 6million people playing warcraft, doesnt make it unworthy of being news.

Kolomo, welcome to the real world! WOW is TOTAL INSANITY and it's made more money for VU games from sales and subscription than all of the FF games since 2001. Just so that you can put that into perspective.

Yeah, they pretty much had it coming, but I guess they did it to be more efficient at getting treasures. I don't think it seems that severe a crime, albeit it's kind of like counterfeiting as it devalues the worth of the treasures that are obtained the normal way.

....what....you people want to pay a monthly fee for an easier game?! I think you guys fail to realize that if you paid money for an easier WOW, that you'd all be disappointed. You'd get your levels and items easier, and then eventually, run out of challenge. Sure, there could be a zone or two that presents to you some form of challenge, but the right party and plan can always see through it (as we all know). If you're going to pay money monthly to play a game, it better be REALLY challenging. That way, you feel like you earned something. When you passed whatever milestone that you're aiming for, you feel that much better about it, and about paying that monthly fee.

Getting banned for cheating on a pay-to-play game such as WoW is steep? If everyone cheated Blizzard wouldn't get much buisness as it would be a free for all.
