WoW Battle For Azeroth Expansion's New PvP War Mode, Bounties, And More Detailed

WoWie.

There's only a little over a month and a half left until the release of World of Warcraft's forthcoming expansion, Battle for Azeroth. We've seen gameplay, collector's editions, and more, but now it's time for some nitty-gritty details on PvP and other new additions coming in the expansion.

We first saw Battle for Azeroth teased in November of last year. The world has been plunged into a war between the Alliance and Horde, and we also know that the expansion will add several new continents and increase the level cap to 120. But that's not all that's being refreshed. PvP talents are seeing some change, and there are three new additions to sink your teeth into: War Mode, bounties, and the Dueler's Guild.

The WoW blog details all of these features. This time around, PvP talents might be a little different than what you're used to. In Legion, talents are earned through playing in PvP and earning honor levels--but this puts newcomers at a disadvantage. In Battle for Azeroth, talents will become available as you level. Instead of rows to choose from, you'll have groups of talents to choose from, and by level 110, all talents will be available to choose from.

Stemming off from that is a whole new way to get into PvP: War Mode. Gone are boundaries like server rule-sets. Any player can play in any realm and opt-in and opt-out when they please.

"With War Mode, we wanted to solve the problem of some players feeling 'locked' into one play style or another by their realm choice," the blog reads. "They might have picked a PvE realm purely because their friends were there, even though they were interested in open world PvP. Conversely, they could have chosen a PvP realm to start, but later decided it wasn’t for them anymore. War Mode provides a way for both styles of gameplay to co-exist for every player--and with the way realm sharding works now, we felt this was the right opportunity to let players choose."

There are several perks to opting in, namely experience bonuses when leveling. At max level, War Mode also offers gold, resources, and artifact power bonuses. You can jump in at level 20 by visiting Orgrimmar or Stormwind.

Within War Mode is another feature: bounties. Since War Mode is a PvP mode, you can gain infamy by killing other players--kill enough without dying and you'll earn the rank of assassin, and a 15 percent increase to health and damage. But there's a danger to this too. Assassin-ranked players are more likely to be spotted on maps for other players to kill and earn bounties from, as well as conquest points.

The new Boralus or Zuldazar areas have outdoor arenas, perfect for the new Dueler's Guild. Like the Brawler's Guild, you'll face off in 1v1 matches with rival players. Once you lose, you're out, but keep winning and you'll get some achievements and a chance at the Contender title.

Battle for Azeroth launches on PC August 14. Pre-order it now and get a one-character level boost to 110.

Man, I really, really, REALLY want to play World of Warcraft again. But, when I always play it. I can never get into raids, good guilds, or guilds that do anything at all, or group events.

@stm1185: But, you want to know what's the worse thing about is?

It's the fact that after sitting through those annoying commercials. After, all of that hub bubba loo. You get to the next video screen instead of the video it's supposed to load. Which happens a lot for me.

I'm getting really tired of the myth of vanilla wow. I played vanilla wow pretty much day 1. It was good, but Burning Crusade was where I started having fun. No one is going to pay to play vanilla wow again. Games have to change, it's kinda like saying Mario was it's best in Mario1. 1 was the first we played and learned how to platform and I have great memories, but it's move past that to bigger and better things. So did wow, but all things must come to an end .

@elron6: False: A lot of people will play vanilla wow when they bring the server online. In my studio of roughly 100 people at least half of those have voiced they're excited. I've played since beta, and I would agree with you that BC was a ton of fun and arguably the peak of WoW. There have been a lot of fantastic changes to improve general gameplay, but overall the game has become a joke of what it once was in terms of difficulty. The streamlined simplicty is also boring, I miss complex talent trees, and I also miss complex old school dungeons, necessary crowd control, and atunements/dungeon secrets and needed items to get there (granted they take up bag space, but the key slot from back then was a good solution) refactors don't have to take out entire elements of a game to improve them. Shit people still play the OG mario, and if you overlook that just because it's older and there's something newer and flashy, then that's your own decision. But don't degrade something just because it's in the past. They wouldn't be bringing a classic server live if there wasn't demand for it.

@ninnymugginz: Don’t kid yourself, everyone is caught up in this nostalgia that once a few months pass they’d be over it and sick of the grind it takes to reach 60 and the grind it took to get 100% mount speed.

This is why blizzard had no intentions to bring back classic servers, the cost and the lack of interest after the nostalgia wore off

@fivepercent: How about you don't tell me what I will and will not enjoy? I stopped playing WoW when the crap shoot of an expansion Cataclysm released. Within 2 weeks. I want the old style back because that's when I had fun, and I stopped playing because the changes made it no longer fun. Pretty black and white to me. You could say whatever you want on what you think will happen, but if a company as renown as Blizzard has decided to do something, it's because there's still a player base for it and demand, hence the endless battles with shutting down non stop private servers. People still play Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft III. And they've been out much longer. The nostalgia argument is /yawn.

@ninnymugginz: "People still play Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft III. And they've been out much longer. The nostalgia argument is /yawn."

Sure at what percentage vs the people who only wish to play current-gen wow? You're talking about a small crowd that has no profit margin to be made with the amount of effort it would take to keep these "classic" servers up and running with maintenance. Also you seem to take great offense to my opinion where no offense was given. Immaturity doesn't seem to be present here. But sure, whine about it because that automatically means you're point is more valid.

@fivepercent: Lmao, whine about it? Was that all you could think of when someone debates your opinion? Really solid move there for someone that can't seem to detect immaturity, even when it surrounds yourself. If you want to tell someone not to kid themselves then claim their interest in something is due to nostalgia hype, then I think you need to relearn the meaning of the word offense. I'm going to assume you don't work in technology or the industry? To keep a classic server alive would take zero effort, the difficulty for them is rewriting the classic code with the modern because it's changed dramatically. WoW dropped from over 12 million players to below 5 when Draenor was released, and all 3 of those games still hold global tournaments, so yes I'd say a decent percentage still wish to play them and vanilla WoW. But if you want to spit childish insults and hypotheticals instead of actual facts, be my guest.

@ninnymugginz: Blizzard has already said it would be too complex whether that's true or not I don't know.

"If you want to tell someone not to kid themselves then claim their interest in something is due to nostalgia hype, then I think you need to relearn the meaning of the word offense."

So telling someone they want something back due to nostalgia is offensive now? Maybe look up the meaning, it has no offensive context about it. Please stop messaging me, you're a complete moron. Offensive enough for you now?

@fivepercent: lolol big man get his buttons pushed too far? I'm not messaging you, I'm responding to comments that you've added to. Sad to watch someone try put their argument out there and all they can do is put up a sad insulting fight. You don't even know how the technology works and you're making claims. Good luck out their buddy... "please stop messaging me" lmao.

@ninnymugginz: Coming from someone preaching about “childish insults” this is rich!! I don’t know how technology works, so why hasn’t blizzard already have done this if it’s soooo easy? Don’t you think they’d love to capatalize on this? Since after all you claim there is a HUGE fan base for this. Another pseudo intellectual gamespot trolling neckbeard who does know his ass from a hole.

@fivepercent: Bahahahaha see? You can't even bring forth an argument based on anything logical. You just revert to trying to belittling someone. You're too easy dude. Please refer back to my previous comments - IT IS difficult for them to refactor the code because it has changed so much and that's why they've held out, to keep the SERVER alive - which is what you said - would take zero effort. Another non intellectual Gamespot twat that thinks he's all that because he calls people neckbeards and thinks he's good at asserting his opinion all over the place. Try again pal. Please stop messaging me LMAO - your words.

@ninnymugginz: You're just a sad pathetic troll. You insert your opinions and then get pissed and say something is insulting you because I said it was "hype" and "nostalgia" Like I said before, it's not worth the costs for blizzard to put forth all that effort for a small portion of loser hipsters who think Classic WoW was the end all be all.

Once people max level and get bored after a few months, then what? another server for BC and so on? Go play on a private server if you're so gaga over vanilla wow. Now you're going on block, im tired you gamespot kids.

@fivepercent: Please. I laid out my argument respectfully originally and you decided force your way in with an idiom and tell my own reasons for wanting something were wrong. Then you tried to put a fact out there about technology you don't even understand. If it's soooooo not worth the cost, then why are they doing it? Why did they fight legal battles over and over with private servers? And there it is again, more ignorance, you don't even know that private servers barley last for hours or days if they're lucky because Blizzard has decided it's a big no no. Learn more about what you're talking about before you get high and mighty next time. Get bent, because you sure as hell suck at defending your argument.

@ninnymugginz: Hahah get bent? that's all you got gamespot kid? you have nothing better to do but pick trivial arguments over something so stupid. Just remember this was all you. You got all upset "How about you don't tell me what I will and will not enjoy?"

You're initial reaction was to take great offense to my comment saying how it was just hype and nostalgia! who honestly gets offended that easily? I pity you, maybe you have issues, but I'm not going to argue with someone who can't act properly to an OPINION that was non-insulting. On the flip side, hopefully you get some psychological help. Now go cry into your pillow Soyboy

@fivepercent: Ahahaha dude every time you respond it get's funnier, you contradict yourself every time it's perfect. I love the irony because apparently I've got nothing better to do while you continue to add to the comments as well, I guess you have nothing better to do as well ahaha. You're exactly right though, I told you not to tell me what I will and will not enjoy, you then insulted me again telling me not to whine. Is this how it is for you when someone smarter than you argues back? Because reading through your comments (despite how much you love calling people trolls in almost every thread) you're one of the biggest I've seen in a while. AND YOU LOVE USING THAT PHRASE SOYBOY. I freaking love meatheads like you, FREAKING EASY TO GET YOU CAUGHT UP AND KEEP RESPONDING - I thought you blocked me... oops that's just more of the shit you're full of. Just like those pesky servers that take an army to keep running. LOL, I'm so glad we're friends now and I have someone to make fun of in the future of Gamespot. Ty for that.

@ninnymugginz: Meathead? lol because of the Soyboy comment? funny. So since I'm not an effeminate beta male like you, this makes me a meathead? great conclusion And I know you have nothing better to do, you feed off this site, you like to take offense to everything albeit it's just someone's opinion and you want to start some little war. Your comments have proven you have a sad pathetic life and have some mental illness.

Go get help instead of shitposting. now Kindly **** off ??????

If they were to add zone dominations, like Planetside, where factions could control entire zones and reap benefits, I would be interested in world PvP in this game. Even throw in a little Warhammer Age of Reckoning style world PvP with tower defence and assaults would be fun. I could see that as truly capturing the hostility between horde and alliance, as you would see ALOT more world PvP going on, like the old days, when ganking and getting ganked was just part of leveling up. Now its all just Arenas and Battlegrounds. Even PvP gear is pretty much gone. Lost all incentive to PvP in this game. Outside of collecting marks of honor for transmogs. Boring.

@RELeon: they introduced World PVP in 4 of the 7 new zones back in 2007, with WoW's 1st expansion pack the burning crusade. I believe the mechanism still works today.

@jyml8582: I do remember that, however BC was a long time ago and nobody really battles for those zones anymore. At least not on a bigger scale. I would like to see ALL of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms to have world PVP objectives to really incite warring between the 2 factions. Not gonna happen, but it would be cool.

Sounds boring, When I read the title I was hoping that war mode would allow each faction to claim territory and such or actually have true meaningful FvF PvP. This makes it just a PvP toggle button with an advantage for turning it on.

Honestly I don't hold high hopes for this expansion. It just looks so... meh. I could be wrong, but I honestly don't think they really know what to do with the game and story right now. The Legion is defeated (for now), and all of sudden we have this tug of war between the Void and the Light with a parallel tension between the Alliance and Horde factions, and it just feels so cliche. It's almost like they're trying to infuse the game with a bit of Vanilla taste, but it's just coming off as a runny, bland mess. Not that I want to go running back to Vanilla either (I seriously don't have the time to invest in the grind like I did back then), but I hope I'm wrong and that this expansion is good.

Already? Did I miss the deep discount on Legion they usually have before the latest expansion hits? I'm only playing for the story now.

@Barighm: Yeah... as far as I can tell they've done things differently this time. I think many of the times before they had a discount of varying degrees and then sometime soon after included the expansion in new purchases of the base game. This time they seem to have had a 50% discount earlier this year and have now included the current expansion in purchases of Battle for Azeroth. I don't actually see a place to buy Legion on its own at all anymore, from Blizzard's store.

@greatatemi: Well... honestly they've already had "battle royale" events and quests going back to the base game in 2004. An arena where you step in and the rules change to every man for himself in the original game, and recently quests where you enter the area and it's every party for themselves PvP.
