Wonder Woman 1984 Soars Past $118 Million At Box Office

The latest box office numbers for Wonder Woman 1984 have arrived.

Warner Bros. has announced the second-weekend box office results for Wonder Woman 1984. The Gal Gadot-starring superhero movie made a further $5.5 million in North America over the weekend, which is down 67 percent compared to its first-weekend numbers.

With the $5.5 million, Wonder Woman 1984 has now made $28.5 million in the US and Canada. Deadline, which supplied the numbers, suggested that the big drop-off in ticket sales for the second weekend is partially attributed to people realizing they can stream the movie at home on HBO Max, and spend less to do so compared to buying tickets for a whole family. Deadline also noted that Wonder Woman 1984's B+ CinemaScore rating might have contributed to a bigger downturn in ticket sales than expected.

Box office results are always front-loaded, so a drop-off in ticket sales across the US and Canada was expected to some degree. Many theatres remain closed or scaled down--60% of US theatres are closed, Deadline said--and people may be generally less inclined to visit a cinema even if it is open due to the health crisis. All of this is contributing to some of the lowest box office results ever for major movies in the past year.

Wonder Woman 1984 is also available to stream at home through HBO Max, but Warner Bros. has yet to provide any information on streaming numbers for the film or what impact its release has had on subscriber numbers. Wonder Woman 1984 will leave HBO Max later this month.

Wonder Woman 1984 has now made $118.5 million worldwide. Analysts told Deadline that the Patty Jenkins-directed film may finish with around $40 million in the US and Canada.

Given the strong start for Wonder Woman 1984, amidst the conditions and environment, Warner Bros. is fast-tracking the third entry in the trilogy. Gadot will reprise her starring role, while Jenkins is also slated to return to direct the film.

Wonder Woman 1984 was the first of WB's new films that released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max, but it won't be the last--all of WB's film releases in 2021 will screen in theatres and at home. This includes The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and the new Dune film with a gigantic cast of huge names.

This tells you all you need to know about this. Good movies aren't the only ones that can make money, awful movies like Wonder Woman 1984 can also sell. This movie is just flat out terrible and I would not give them a penny out of my packet.

If people keep giving them the money for this less than stellar efforts, they will continue making garbage of movies and still make big profits at the movie theater's.

Remember guys, this site also gave birds of prey and captain marvel near perfect scores. I love that women are getting more lead roles, but I want the movies to be solid and entertaining. I feel like for every DC movie thats actually good, there are 10 other movies that range from ok to utterly horrible.

This was such an awful movie. It doesn’t deserve any money and Patty Jenkins made a solid case for her being a on-hit-wonder.

Her recent interview about the studio telling her everything she had to do in the first one also did more to hurt her case, than it did to help. It just shows that she can’t be trusted to make a good movie, and the first one would’ve been terrible, too, if not for the studio stepping it.

It’s funny, usually studios mess up these movies when they don’t give the director more creative control. I guess we’re in for another terrible Star Wars movie, since she’s helming Rogue Squadron.

It's so unbelievably bad. Patty Jenkins is a hack and Gal Gadot is a pretty garbage actress.

As is the case with a lot of these tentpole superhero movies, the Red Letter Media episode on it was more appealing than the movie itself. No way was I going to plunk down 30 bucks to stream it in the first 2 weeks.

I don't get what people are so excited about...this movie seemed awful to me. I loved the first one but this one seemed...disjointed and slow. My wife - who loves WW - didn't like it either.

It begs to ask - what are we pushing here with these good reviews? Are we afraid that a bad female focused superhero movie will destroy the demand for female superheroes? Give me a break. Gadot is the perfect WW - the movie just sucked.

@cj_topspin: Calm down with the conspiracy theories, dude... The movie has a 60 average on metacritic, which is above "mediocre" but still below "good". Noone's pushing anything and !SHOCKER! movie taste differs from person to person.

@Berserk8989: Was i being conspiratorial? I was simply pointing out the extremes in reviews and a known institutional fear in Hollywood of criticizing what is perceived as “marginalized” groups.

I’m suggesting saying the movie “isn’t good” is ok and doesn’t immediately make you a sexist.

GameSpot gave this movie a 9/10.

It was the most politically-correct, reality-warping review I've read on this site in years, and this article has just as much nonsense in it. Starting from the title. Its ticket sales “soared”, did they? All the way past “awful” and headed for “underwhelming” you mean; they way an airplane “soars” into the ocean, you mean.

The movie was awful. Everyone knows it was awful. IMDb had it at 6.9 when it came out and it has just fallen and fallen almost every day to 5.5 as of Jan 5th. I live on the other side of the world and people were randomly bringing up in conversation with me, the international news of how badly this movie sucked.

But I guess you can never prove that a review is a fake opinion, that's why they're so common.

@naryanrobinson: I have not seen it yet, but I will. It looks sillier than the first and Gadot looking good is really the only thing drawing me in. If the first was better (with that villain), then that may not be a good thing. Hollywood really picks the wrong villains for these comic movies. Maybe they think that some of them may outshine the star.

That's a pretty good haul considering people on tv and internet tell me that going to the theater leads to certain death.

The excuses are thick in this article. You had to be living under a rock to not know you can stream it on HBO Max. The movie was just plain bad and word of mouth was not good so drop off was expected. Though I am surprised it was quite that drastic. Maybe part 3 will be more like part 1 and nothing from 1984 carries over.

Maybe this time they can resurrect Chris Pine into a womans body just to change it up.

I spoiled this for myself because I kept hearing about how bad it was and didn't want to be tempted to subscribe for one movie. Glad I did, because wow does it sound terrible.

@Phoenix2518: It is terrible. Sometimes you’ll stumble on articles that say something like, “Don’t listen to the haters. WW1984 isn’t as bad as people are saying.”

That is a false statement. It’s a horrible movie.
