Wolfenstein: The New Order Dev's Next Game Is "F**king Bananas," Bethesda Boss Says

"MachineGames has been hard at work on something, which I can tell you I have played."

It's been rumored for a long time now that Wolfenstein: The New Order developer MachineGames is making a sequel as its next project. It has not been formally announced, but now Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines has teased it again.

Appearing on the latest Kinda Funny Gamescast, Hines said he's already played this game and it is "f**king bananas."

"MachineGames has been hard at work on something, which I can tell you I have played," he explained. "It is f**king bananas. And I can't wait to show what it actually is."

Host Greg Miller asked if the game will be revealed at E3 2017. Hines didn't respond to this directly, but said, "I'll let you know when."

The next game from MachineGames is widely believed to be a sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order. A mock cmd.exe screen flashed on-screen during Bethesda's E3 2016 briefing that showed an unknown property called "The New Colossus," with a release date listed as only **-**-**.

It's not clear what The New Colossus is at the moment--it could be the name of the rumored sequel, an expansion, or something else entirely. "New Colossus" may refer to a sonnet by Emma Lazarus, which, in addition to appearing on the base of the Statue of Liberty, was also recited by Wolfenstein protagonist BJ Blazkowicz at the end of The New Order.

MachineGames is owned by Bethesda and The New Order was its first game. Just a month after the game came out in 2014, creative director Jens Matthies said the studio has a "very, very clear idea" for what it could do with a sequel. "We would love to do a sequel," he added.

A standalone game, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, came out in May 2015.

In September 2015, Alicja Bachleda-Curus, who played Anya Oliwa in The New Order, said she's working on a "second one" that could launch in 2017. In October last year, B.J. Blazkowicz voice actor Brian Bloom strongly suggested that a new Wolfenstein game is on the way.

I hope MachineGames makes New Colossus as, if not, more enjoyable than the New Order. Was my GOTY for 2014.

Wolfenstein: The NewOrder was a brilliant game, it stuck to doing what it did fantastically well, yet never for a moment had you feeling that exact thing was the point. Honestly I could only complain about its graphics and 60fps lock, both things idTech 6 has demonstrated beautifully, are now problems of the past.

Seriously looking forward to whatever they come up with next.

Do they really need to use curse words in headlines to clickbait people now?

@x_darksouls_x: It's just Eddie, he's done it twice today already. He's hopeless and actually getting worse somehow.

@naryanrobinson: They haven't unchained him from his desk since he hasn't made his headline quota for the day, he's getting all fidgety now. Poor Eddie.

New order was pretty good IMO. I found it satisfying on many levels, but I seriously hope they use the updated engine like DOOM did, instead of the same one that The Old Blood, and The New Order used.

I wouldn't be upset (at all) if their next game is a sequel to The New Order. However, I would personally like to see something new.

@sellingthings: Wait are you thinking I said something new as in a new Wolfenstein? I mean a new IP period actually. I would prefer to see them do something with a depreciated IP like Duke Nukem, or something completely new. They can do a continuation of the New Order after a new game, but hey that is just my personal wants.

As far as sequel, thats why I would want them to do a New Order sequel.

@bwats84: It's totally worth it -- it just keeps getting better and better through the end, and the expansion (kind of a Rogue One, well BEFORE Rogue One) is just as essential.

If you hit one of the hardest parts, there's no shame in lowering the difficulty on your first full playthrough so you can experience the narrative! There are also multiple paths/solutions built into nearly every set-piece.

@Pyrosa: That's my issue, my pride just won't let me lower the difficulty in ANY game. Once I start it on the hardest difficulty, I just can't lower it later on lol. But it is an amazing game

@bwats84: I'm the same way, i tend to dive right in on the hardest difficulty and don't lower it.

I have to commend Machinegames for their effort into putting an actual narrative with thought into Wolfenstein unlike so many of their contemporaries.

I’m not insinuating that Wolfenstein: The New Order had a narrative on par with some of the more talked about games in the industry that exemplify this trait but when one considers the genre it is lumped in it’s hard to argue that many others would be vying for that title.

It seems like developers in FPS games (not all but an overwhelming majority.) take a distant “backseat” approach to their refinement of any type of story whether it be character, plot, or story arch development.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this to some effect. That feeling that the story or world in a game we are playing is just an afterthought or an excuse rather to go around and shoot things. And hey, that’s fine. That’s why we play games, right? To play them.

Still, when developers put the time into their craft and either push the boundaries of their genre or do things that others gloss over as being “unimportant” it personally makes me as a gamer stand up and take notice.

"f**king bananas"? Hmm, having intercourse with bananas is certainly original, but I don't think it would make for a good gameplay mechanic. We have too many odd/bad copulation depictions in games already. Although, MachineGames previous games have been good, so I'm hoping this one will be good as well.
