With Fallout 5 Coming, Obsidian CEO Still Interested In Making A New Fallout
"We'll have to wait and see."
The CEO of Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian has said he wants to make another Fallout game before he retires, but the California studio isn't working on any Fallout game right now.
Feargus Urquhart told Gamepressure that Obsidian's development plate is "pretty full" right now with its existing lineup of projects like Avowed and Outer Worlds 2, as well as the ongoing development of Grounded. As such, Obsidian is "not working on" a new Fallout game right now.
That said, Urquhart, 52, said he hopes to be able to make another Fallout game before he retires. "I don't know when that is, I don't have a date of my retirement. It's funny--you can say I'm already 52, or only 52. It's one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that'll happen, but we'll have to wait and see."
Urquhart's comments are nothing new or surprising. He's been saying for some time that he wants to make another Fallout game someday. In October 2022, he said, "Of course, if we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we'd make it."
Obsidian was a private company until 2018 when Microsoft acquired the studio. Microsoft later bought ZeniMax, which owns Bethesda, so now Obsidian and Fallout are under the same roof. This could suggest Obsidian may have an easier road to making a Fallout game, but nothing is confirmed.
Josh Sawyer, who directed 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, also recently discussed the series. He said in November 2022, "I could see myself working in it again, but you know, we'll see where the future takes me." Sawyer said a future Fallout game could take place in New Orleans, California, or the American Midwest, or potentially outside of the United States.
Fallout 5 is currently in development at Bethesda Game Studios, but it's not coming for a long time. Bethesda Game Studios' next big release is 2023's Starfield, which will be followed by The Elder Scrolls VI, and then Fallout 5 after that.
