With Borderlands 3 Coming, Franchise Nearing 25 Million Units Shipped

8 million units shipped during the most recent fiscal year alone.

The Borderlands franchise has now sold-in, i.e. shipped, nearly 25 million units. 2K Games parent publisher Take-Two Interactive announced the milestone as part of its latest earnings report.

Take-Two did not provide a game-by-game sales breakdown. However, the company said it shipped more than 8 million Borderlands games in its fiscal 2015.

No Caption Provided

The franchise debuted in 2009 with the original Borderlands, with sequel Borderlands 2 arriving in 2012. That game is the best-selling title in 2K's history and has sold "well over" 12 million copies.

A third game, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, was released in 2014 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before being ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 through the Handsome Collection earlier this year.

In January 2015, Gearbox officially announced the next game in the Borderlands series, which studio president Randy Pitchford described as "the big one." Take-Two later clarified that this game is being developed "specifically for next-gen."

Gearbox hasn't said whether the new Borderlands game is Borderlands 3, but given the fact that Pitchford has called it the "big one," it seems likely. No release date, or even a projection of a release date, has been announced for the game yet.

Pre-sequal was pretty shit. very disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Borderlands is one of the best game and I still love it. So now I'm very much hoping they come back for the best Borderlands!

I loved Borderlands, Borderlands 2 >>>>>AND<<<<< Pre-Sequel so much. I'm loving Tales from the Borderlands too. Can't wait for their next game. One thing I would wish for is making the story easier to follow (loved the character interactions they added in Pre-Sequel). I hate when I play with a friend and they have zero clue of what's going on. Or we could just shoot stuff and kill stuff like always, I don't mind.

According to an interview Pitchford gave at PAX South in January of this year, they haven't even started making Borderlands 3 yet. I wouldn't expect it for a loooooooong time.

I don't trust Gearbox after the Handsome Collection of Frame Rate and Screen Tear Problems debacle.

I loved Borderlands 2; along with Bad Company 2 my favorites FPS games of last gen. That said, I feel a little oversaturation of the franchise; I really don't feel the need of a sequel right now.

@cboye18: borderlands is actually a FPS action RPG just so you know that's why you find RPG elements and a strong narrative in Borderlands games unlike most FPS games. The RPG genre has a lot of sub genres nowadays and certainly bigger and more then it once was and had.

@jnw93: That was due to the Pre-Sequel being made in 2K Australia instead of Gearbox back in America. As such, they had Australian voice actors, and ended up thinking it fit the game anyway, as the accents helped put the point across that the game took place in a different location (Elpis) to Borderlands 1 and 2 (Pandora).

So the next one, which is being made by Gearbox once again, thankfully won't fully feature them. I'm sure they'll bring back one or two characters from TPS though, so expect that.

Let's hope they change the style a bit to have more affect on the environment as the art style looks cool, but sort of ugly when you realize that it's like a cartoon that stays constant regardless of the chaos you create. Loved the weapon randomizations to a point, but I found the grind a bit tedious as even though weapons were varied the hit detection seemed off, probably the wonky looking art style creating issues with hit detection bounding.

Still have to grab the Handsome collection to finish off the DLC, but not right now, got Project Cars consuming the time I have stuck in Destiny, not room for much else at the moment.

@SavageEvil: I love the Art Style, It is mostly unique in that regard. Although NOW that style is going to be used by some games coming out. I hope that it will get more texture detail much like Sunset Overdrive which I love from a visual perspective, (also love the gameplay, but thats another conversation).

I got through Borderlands, but never finished the dlc. Haven't touched the second game and as for the third it seems not much different from the second. In fact they all seem exactly the same, which is probably why I have no motivation to play through the series.

@reduc_ab_: your loss great franchise that is well worth anyone's time and money no matter if not what you may think it's surely one of the better action RPG franchises ATM that is fun all around and full of content and replay value that delivers tons of hours both solo and even coop wise as it has a true coop mode within the campaign itself not the separate multiplayer coop mode games adopt nowadays so that they can tie a cash shop/microtransactions to it so that they can milk away sad really.

@reduc_ab_: I got bored with the first one pretty quickly but I loved the second one. I'm on the third one right now. It's like BL2 with low gravity jumps.

@ck02623: my favorite was actually borderlands 1 but I did prefer BL2 more in certain aspects of the game like I found both had something to offer better then the other but will admit BL2 was more successful sales wise and did have a stronger narrative.

@reduc_ab_: If you've got no motivation to play beyond the first game, it sounds like the real issue is that you're just not that into Borderlands.

@reduc_ab_: While this is true from a mechanical point of view, the writing and story get way better later on. The BL1 vanilla game is fairly bland, but the DLC has great writing and humor, and that carries on through to BL2.

@unreal849: I thought 1 and 2 felt 'mechanically' similar, until I played them back to back. Now I never want to play the original again: Just look at the view when you're holding a Sniper Rifle. They shove that thing right into your face. They made a lot of changes for the second one that I didn't respect or acknowledge until now.

@Too-DementeD: keep in mind there is an age difference too so that matters game design wise as BL1 was great in its time .

@Too-DementeD: Yeah, but the basic format remains near-identical. As you pointed out yourself, you didn't notice the changes until you played the two next to each other.

@unreal849: True, it does, but I can't help but wonder if others could see these differences much easier than I did at the time. I hadn't played Borderlands for 2 years before BL2 came out, so I couldn't tell much had changed at all.

Was your friend a higher level than you because that's a reason why it can feel grindy. It's best to play with someone of the same level.

@Gamer3344: I have mixed feeling about it (despite having played through two games' worth). It's great with friends, or if you just feel like playing a mindless loot grinder, but it can get very boring, too.

@teske4444: And by "loot-heavy", you really mean "vendor trash-heavy". I like discovering new guns, but all too early in a lot of these games, the situation becomes that 99% of all the guns you pick up are only there to be sold, because they're nowhere near as good as your equipped gun. This gets especially bad in the endgame where the high-end guns have to be obtained with specific actions and all of the fun of randomly getting cool new gear is completely gone. Sucks a lot of fun out of it IMO.

@unreal849: Haha, extremely true... It got really crappy when you started doing OP levels and even purple rarity became trash. The grinder was one nice addition to TPS that made it easier to get useful/better guns.

@unreal849: Worth it , IF IF you pay $20 or less. Its boring for the first half of the game. But the payoff at the end is worth it. Worth it for $20 that is.

@unreal849: well what can I say... I did enjoy it, but it was rather repetitive, and the cast wasn't as interesting as BL2 imo. It however has some interesting gameplay elements, and some pretty cool guns, especially the ones that stream continuous laser beams (Moxxi gives you one).

Get it cheap I guess.
