Witcher Dev "Will Think About" The Witcher 4, But Nothing Confirmed Yet

"We like this world a lot. We invested 15 years of our lives in it and a lot of money."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the last game in the series to star Geralt of Rivia, but it might not be the final game in the franchise overall. During CD Projekt Red's latest management meeting today, executives stressed that the series was conceived as a trilogy, so a fourth game in Geralt's story might not make sense. However, that doesn't mean more games in the series are ruled out.

"The Witcher was designed as a trilogy and a trilogy cannot have a fourth part, can it?" an executive said during a Q&A session that followed the results briefing. "We like this world a lot. We invested 15 years of our lives in it and a lot of money. So, we'll think about [making a fourth Witcher game]."

Some of CD Projekt Red's current projects include Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, the Polish studio is working on another AAA game.

The Witcher 3 was a critical and commercial success, so The Witcher 4 coming to market eventually seems likely, though it surely won't happen soon. In December 2015, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski said it would be unfair to fans of the series not to make a fourth game.

Another CD Projekt Red boss, Marcin Iwinski, said previously that the Witcher series "deserves some rest," while the team shifts to Cyberpunk 2077. "The past 10 years the team has been working on swords and castles and medieval Slavic monsters. So I think it's time for some guns, androids, and some ammo," Iwinski said.

In other news about The Witcher, CD Projekt Red has announced that the franchise has now reached 25 million units sold across the trilogy.

I know they said they wouldn't do it. But I think The Witcher, and Witcher 2 solidly remastered/remade and sold as a trilogy would wrap things up nicely. (likely on the next generation of consoles). The graphics and gameplay drastically improved from 1 to 2 to 3. So I think since they practically perfected their work of art and created a solid engine in the process would be worth the time and investment. Also they created a great closed story within the trilogy and didn't blow the end like Mass Effect. I was impressed how the Witcher trilogy built and improved on the ending of the 7 Witcher Books (well, 8 now that Sapkowski recently wrote Season of Storms). We tend to cherish things when they come to an end and have a real ending (i.e. recent Dark Souls trilogy). A Witcher 4 would kind of ruin that and feel superfluous.

If they make another Witcher I hope they drastically improve the combat gameplay. That's the one thing I just can't enjoy even after 120+ hr playthrough

Avid Witcher fan, and with Geralt's story over it doesn't mean they have to do Ciri or anybody else, make it so we can create our own Witcher maybe?

Avatar image for excelsagas

legit made an account here just to say, i hope they don't do this. the ending of blood & wine (after geralt looks at the camera and you return to the vineyard) is legit perfect.

maybe if the game is about Ciri, but even so, i think it ended on a perfect high note and a fourth might not be as good.

Although I know it will be prolly 2019 before we get it, its still encouraging to hear those words. The Witcher 4!!!

Avatar image for slypher9

Witcher 4 for ps5 & the next xbox (not Scorpio), most likely Cyberpunk 2077 is being aimed for a 2018 ship

Avatar image for soulfulDAGGER

Let's hope he "thinks" about hiring some better animators for play control, first.

meh I still have witcher 2 to beat and to start witcher 3, I waiting till i get around to getting a GPU that can actual do justice to them in all there glory, I only beat witcher 1 about 9 months ago.

I rather they finish Cyberpunk 2077 before 2021 seeing it was announced back in 2012, 10 years development cycles games never live up to they hype the create in that time.

Avatar image for kdogpa

@tsunami2311: well it sounds like you still have at minimum 100 hours if you still have to beat 2, then 3 with both expansions, good luck!

i belive that a good mmo, how about free, with the witchers schools, and the other thinks should be the better way.

Avatar image for darkouer

Of course there will be a Witcher 4. it is only a matter of time. It's not like they have that many IPs. The good thing is that in their case quality trumps quantity, unlike Ubisoft, Activision or EA.

Avatar image for yukushi

They should make a witcher collection with all 3 games remastered with 4k support, it would sell like hot cakes.

Avatar image for soulfulDAGGER

@yukushi: You can already play them in 4k if you have a proper 4k display

As a fan I'm exited but firstly it was said many times that Gerald would not be the main character (probably he will be in the game as a world character), and by saying this it doesn't make sense to call the game "the witcher 4". If you do that, you have to bring as a playable character a witcher for sure. I don't recall any other suitable witcher character from the book (main story) to star as the main character. CD Projekt Red will need to create a character from scratch, a person not involved in the books/games. It's a great risk to take giving that the final product will be critically compared with the trilogy of Gerald. I would say amen to the new game but please bring us something worth playing. CD Projekt Red never disappointed us the fans!

Avatar image for xxmavr1kxx

@altairdarius: There is Ciri who is..... um Kinda not a Witcher but close enough.

Avatar image for altairdarius

@xxmavr1kxx: even if she isn't a fully witcheres I would call her a witcher just for the sake of her formed culture but then again, if they are going to use Ciri as the main character (who in my point of view it will be streching her consolidated story with no purpose at all) they have to forcefully bring Gerald into the game. There is no Ciri without him because she is his child suprise. Pavetta Ciris' mother gifted her child as a destiny to Gerald. So I think Ciri is not suited to be in the Witcher 4.

Avatar image for xxmavr1kxx

@altairdarius: Pavetta had to Gift Geralt the Ciri because if it werent for Geralt her lovers curse would have never been broken. Actually, Pavetta would of probably killed everyone that night where the Queen was going to give her hand away until the Knight returned for his debt collection promised by the former King.

Avatar image for xxmavr1kxx

@altairdarius You know they could bring Geralt back. Lets say he went and retired form being a Witcher (depending on the ending you got) but the Elves in the Mountains finally come down to attack like they promised. (This may have happened already but I didnt read it int he books yet)

Avatar image for domiddian

Witcher 3 was amazing, I'm still playing it now almost a year and a half after completing the main game (there's still a lot to explore).

Would kill for another one!

Avatar image for xxmavr1kxx

@domiddian: I played all of 3. Every DLC avaliable, and I believe i did almost everything there is to do, except the Gwent stuff, but I to plan to replay it. Maybe Next Winter. I know whats i start playing again it will suck me and i will loose my social life, and I dont want to do that in the summer or the fall.

Avatar image for domiddian

@xxmavr1kxx: Yeah I just dip into it every now and then pick an area of the map that still has loads of symbols all over it and go wipe them clean (if my level allows). I did all the main and side quests, but still like to go get lost in that epic world.

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

Yes, bring Witcher 4 but wait a littler while longer explore other options first.

Avatar image for bottaboomstick

here is my money $$$$$$

Avatar image for casshan01

Screw what they want, they knew this biz was demanding when they signed up for it. GIVE US WITCHER 4!!

Avatar image for Vojtass

I think the devs deserve rest from Witcherland. Some of them would probably puke if they would have to do another fantasy RPG.

Avatar image for Starshine_M2A2

Finish Cyberpunk first! We've seen what happens when developers start a new project too early...

Avatar image for DoomSky

I'd like to play a witcher from one of the other schools like Cat or Bear.

But honestly Blood and Wine was such a great way to end I'd be happy to leave it there.

Avatar image for killercondoms

@DoomSky: I always wanted to play a berserker while being a witcher from the school of the Bear

Avatar image for stelios

I would like another Witcher game. However if they ditch Geralt, which would be reasonable as they gave him closure, Ciri would be the obvious choice to carry the torch for the main series, and it really is hard to create compelling gameplay around a character of this power magnitude.

Perhaps a prequel would be a good idea. There's lots of stuff to cover in Geralt's past.

Avatar image for altairdarius

@stelios: If you bring Ciri as the main character, you probably can't give up to Gerald. He will surely be in the game too as a world character. If that's case they shouldn't consider it as an option at all giving their statement of the Gerald's story ends here.

Avatar image for Vojtass

@stelios: I don't think Ciri is a good choice for the Witcher games - 1. she's already overpowered, 2. she isn't a witcher. However I think old times are great for making new Witcher aRPG with customizable player's character, 200 years before TW1 events. This world has great potential, it's worth to read the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Avatar image for RevengeNegative

Considering Cyberpunk's release window is 2017-2021 and the fact that each Witcher game has taken 4 years to develop - CDPR could (even though it's unlikely) release Witcher IV between 2021-2025. But why should the keep milking the same old cow, when they have a promising new IP just waiting to get expanded?

Avatar image for timmyboy101

They should focus on cyberpunk and not listen to the community. Witcher is amazing but that's because it wasn't in the spotlight.

Avatar image for lukasr

There'll definitely be another Witcher game. Business 101.

Probably not until after Cyberpunk is released, though.

Avatar image for dev-raid1

i would prefer a brand new ip, while the witcher is great im over it

Breaking news: Nintendo considering another Zelda game.

Avatar image for heqteur

Yeah, right, they're still thinking whether or not they will push the power button on their money printing machine again... This mostly means it's in early development at the moment and they just want people to leave them alone before they officially announce it.

Avatar image for debateme

Why not just make a second trilogy?

Avatar image for Dark_Matters

Focus on Cyberpunk 2077 first, for god's sake. We don't even have a release date, or even so much as a single screenshot of the game yet.

Avatar image for Vojtass

@Dark_Matters: They don't make another Witcher game, except Gwent. It was just one guy who tried to squeeze CDP CEO during Q&A session. He said that they will see, but it won't be anytime soon. I think CDP is making another RPG, completely new IP.

Avatar image for lukasr

@Dark_Matters: We can sleep well knowing CD Projekt Red know what they're doing.
